SUMMARY:Sleepover at the National Archives
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 1\, 2020\, the National Archives and the National Archives Foundation are partnering to host the 13th overnight event where children ages 8 to 12 years old can sleep where the Declaration of Independence\, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights are housed. \nOver the years\, the National Archives and National Archives Foundation have worked together to host one of their most popular events and inspire the next generation of young learners\, historians and civic participants. The biannual sleepovers are part of a larger civic education initiative at the National Archives in which students are encouraged to become actively engaged in our democracy. \nEach year the sleepover has a different theme to reflect the diversity of the holdings in the Archives and our vast American history. The theme of the upcoming February sleepover is women’s suffrage\, relating to the newest National Archives exhibit\, Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote. \nAt the February event\, 120 participants will have an opportunity to learn about America’s past in engaging ways\, including learning about the women’s suffrage movement and the struggle for equal rights that many women are still fighting today. \nAfter spending the night next to the Charters of Freedom in the Archives Rotunda and Rotunda Galleries\, participants will enjoy pancakes made by Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero. \n** Membership Giveaway! **\nWhen guests register for the February sleepover\, they will be automatically entered to win a free membership to the National Archives Foundation at the Madison level. This $250 value includes incredible benefits like personalized guided tours of National Archives Museum and invitations to exhibit openings and members-only events at the Archives.

SUMMARY:Future Sketches at ARTECHOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Imagine different possible futures – for the intersection of computation and design\, for the interaction between humans and computers\, and for an expressive augmented reality. \nNow\, imagine yourself in it. \nWe are thrilled to kick off our Washington D.C. 2020 season with Future Sketches\, a collaboration with one of the most dynamic pioneers in the field of coding and interactive media. \nZach Lieberman creates digital poetry through code\, technology and theory. He writes his own software to create his artwork\, and is a co-creator of openFrameworks\, an open source C++ toolkit for creative coding. \nFuture Sketches is the first solo exhibition of Lieberman’s work in Washington D.C.\, with an emphasis on his eclectic style of sketching with code for creative exploration. The installations presented draw on over a decade of work and research in the field of media art\, exploring how the body\, voice and gesture can be transformed in expressive ways. \nExpect to be surprised at every corner\, as the boundaries between the visible and invisible are broken down.

SUMMARY:Step Afrika! at Strathmore
DESCRIPTION:Strathmore is proud to welcome back Step Afrika!\, the first professional organization dedicated to the African American tradition of stepping. This performance begins with a showcase of the region’s finest step squads featuring lightning-fast footwork\, percussive chants\, and incredible synchronicity. In addition to Step Xplosion\, Step Afrika! will showcase a portion of their new work\, Drumfolk\, commissioned by Strathmore. Drumfolk honors the heritage of step and places the evolution of this vibrant art form in its historical context. Tracing step’s roots to the African American percussive traditions of patting juba\, hambone\, ring shout\, and tap\, Drumfolk reflects on the harsh realities of the American South and celebrates the fortitude of enslaved Africans who practiced these transcendent musical forms. Ideal for ages 8 and up.
