SUMMARY:Future Sketches at ARTECHOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Imagine different possible futures – for the intersection of computation and design\, for the interaction between humans and computers\, and for an expressive augmented reality. \nNow\, imagine yourself in it. \nWe are thrilled to kick off our Washington D.C. 2020 season with Future Sketches\, a collaboration with one of the most dynamic pioneers in the field of coding and interactive media. \nZach Lieberman creates digital poetry through code\, technology and theory. He writes his own software to create his artwork\, and is a co-creator of openFrameworks\, an open source C++ toolkit for creative coding. \nFuture Sketches is the first solo exhibition of Lieberman’s work in Washington D.C.\, with an emphasis on his eclectic style of sketching with code for creative exploration. The installations presented draw on over a decade of work and research in the field of media art\, exploring how the body\, voice and gesture can be transformed in expressive ways. \nExpect to be surprised at every corner\, as the boundaries between the visible and invisible are broken down.

SUMMARY:Storytime: Martin's Big Words
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day\, we will explore the power of big words. After viewing the very big words used in Barbara Kruger’s installation Belief + Doubt\, we will read Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport. Then we’ll create a mini-installation of our own\, using our own big words to share a message of love and kindness. \nSTORYTIME explores contemporary art through stories and movement. Each week features a fresh and fun theme. Bring your littlest art lover for an introduction to an artist on view\, interactive read aloud\, and a hands-on activity.

SUMMARY:Step Afrika! at Strathmore
DESCRIPTION:Strathmore is proud to welcome back Step Afrika!\, the first professional organization dedicated to the African American tradition of stepping. This performance begins with a showcase of the region’s finest step squads featuring lightning-fast footwork\, percussive chants\, and incredible synchronicity. In addition to Step Xplosion\, Step Afrika! will showcase a portion of their new work\, Drumfolk\, commissioned by Strathmore. Drumfolk honors the heritage of step and places the evolution of this vibrant art form in its historical context. Tracing step’s roots to the African American percussive traditions of patting juba\, hambone\, ring shout\, and tap\, Drumfolk reflects on the harsh realities of the American South and celebrates the fortitude of enslaved Africans who practiced these transcendent musical forms. Ideal for ages 8 and up.
