Weekend Picks: Magic Shows, Gustafer Yellowgold & Corcoran

We’ve found some awesome events sure to make you and your child happy for the weekend. But, we’re not sure how you will choose where you will go as there are so many fun things to do. Would love to hear where you’re going or if you’ve been to any of the listed venues, please post a comment and let others know!

Saturday~

He will be joined by Barry the Magician for his Barry’s final show (he is retiring) as they entertain everyone with their magic show. You can purchase tickets here– tickets will sell out so act quick. I can attest that The Great Zucchini captures children’s attention almost instantly, your kid will love it. Go a few more miles into DC and stop at the zoo to see Bao Bao, the panda bear after the show.

10:00am-11:00am- (Adams Morgan) Family Fiesta at El Tamarindo hosts all of your children’s favorite musicians in one spot! John Henry the Guitar Man, Marsha Goodman-Wood, The Singing Lizard, The Uncle Devin Show AND !Uno, Dos, Tres Con Andres! The regular menu will be available as will healthy kid-friendly options and hey, it’s 5:00 somewhere, enjoy a margarita while the kids rock out to the music. $5.00 at the door.

10:00am (doors open), 10:30am (show begins)- (Vienna, Va) Gustafer Yellowgold created by Morgan Taylor plays at Jammin Java. Parents you may be entertained as well as Gustafer Yellowgold has performed as the support act for WILCO and The Polyphonic Spree.

10:30am- (Bethesda) Saturday Song Circle at Imagination Stage invites you to a fun, interactive musical experience! An Early Childhood Teaching Artist (playing a ukulele!) explores the popular book, What a Wonderful World with your family through song and musical instruments. You will also receive a list of all the songs to practice at home. (Though these workshops are recommended up to age 3, we know your 4 & 5 year-old children will enjoy them, too!)

Sunday~

10:00am- (DC) Sundays at the J (DCJCC) this weekend is Baby Lap Time. Meet in the Etzim Room (Preschool classroom 5, 2nd floor).  These programs are FREE, with no reservation required, but attendance is limited to the first 20 children so arrive a bit early.  If the weather is nice you can walk across 16th St to Stead Playground to get some energy out. (pre-walking babies, 0-14 months)

10:00am-2:00pm- (Takoma Park) Takoma Park Farmers Market is open year round and has fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies. Grab something fresh to make for dinner. Did we mention you can walk around munching on delicious baked goods?! The market is on Laurel Ave in Old Takoma. The market was voted Runner Up by City Paper’s 2013 Readers Choice Best of DC.

10:30am- (Downtown) National Mall’s Air & Space Museum presents One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure on IMAX. Join Big Bird and Elmo as they explore the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu, a Muppet from “Zhima Jie,” the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street. Together they take an imaginary trip from Sesame Street to the moon, where they discover how different it is from Earth. They also journey to Zhima Jie to learn about the similarities in our view of the sky.

3:15pm- (Tenleytown) Family Practice at our favorite family-friendly yoga studio, Lil Omm. This is a unique class for families with children ages 4 and up who want to learn yoga postures in a structured studio setting. Class will be 40 minutes and will include warm up, standing postures and relaxation appropriate for all levels. The intention of this class is to introduce our children to the more formal practices in an inclusive and safe class. Cost: $20/family.

  • Took our little guy to El Tamarindo this morning for the Family Fiesta -- and had a great time. Even stuck around for lunch! Looks like this is going to be a regular thing-- every Saturday. Thanks so much for the heads up!

    • We too were there Katy! It was a great show one that they plan to have each Saturday. Glad you had fun =)
