Camp Kesem provides a free week-long summer camp and year-round support to children in the DMV area impacted by a parent’s cancer

April 10, 2019

Camp Kesem is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer by providing innovative, fun-filled programs that foster a lasting community. Kesem is the nation’s largest community for children impacted by a parent’s cancer – a unique population estimated to be over 5 million. While every child experiences a parent’s cancer journey uniquely – regardless of if the parent dies, survives, or is currently undergoing treatment – a child’s Kesem experience, grounded in experiencing the joy of childhood, helps by providing children coping with a parent’s cancer with a community of support with peers who are just like them.

Camp Kesem is Kesem’s flagship program, in which chapters at universities across the country provide a cost-free summer camp to the families they serve. Camp Kesem chapters serve children ages 6-18. In 2019, Kesem will provide over 10,000 children with free, supportive, life-changing experiences through projects at 116 college chapters in 42 states. In the DC metro area, the George Washington University, George Mason University, the University of Maryland, and Johns Hopkins University each host different weeks of camp at different locations. Visit the Camp Kesem website to find the chapter that is best for you!

Camp Kesem is a week of pure fun, in which campers get to be surrounded by other kids who understand what they are going through. The community that Camp Kesem fosters is unlike any other, and the bonds created at Kesem last a lifetime. Throughout the week campers participate in activities such as messy games, color wars, swimming, ropes courses, arts and crafts, and all things summer camp! Marshmallows are roasted, talents are showcased at the yearly talent show, and friendships are made. The college students who train, fundraise, and plan year-round for Camp Kesem serve as volunteer counselors, and it is the best week of the year for all involved. Camp Kesem is a place where children who have a unique experience feel understood. Camp Kesem becomes a home away from home for all who attend.
