Exploring Brookland, DC: A Family-Friendly Guide

Brookland, DC, is one of the city’s hidden gems, filled with artsy vibes, historic spots, and green spaces that make it a great destination for a day of family exploration. Here’s a guide to some top spots and activities that everyone in the family will love.

1. Monroe Street Market

Monroe Street Market is a lively place where the community gathers, and there’s something for everyone. The Arts Walk is a favorite with its studios showcasing local artists’ work, perfect for a family stroll. Stop by one of the colorful murals for a family photo, or take a look inside the studios for a glimpse into the creative process.

If you’re visiting on a weekend, check out the Brookland Farmer’s Market, where you can pick up fresh produce, snacks, and homemade goodies. It’s a great spot for kids to sample local treats and get to know some of the neighborhood vendors.

2. Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America

The Franciscan Monastery offers a beautiful and peaceful spot that’s surprisingly family-friendly. The monastery’s garden is a highlight, with winding paths, fountains, and flowers that bloom in a range of colors, especially in spring and summer. Kids can explore the outdoor spaces, look at the statues, or take in views of the historic monastery architecture. 3. Get Active

Turkey Thicket Recreation Center

For families with active kids, Turkey Thicket Recreation Center is a great stop. This community center has something for all ages, with a pool, playground, and outdoor fields. The playground is spacious and has a variety of equipment, while the indoor pool offers open swim times that are great for cooling off in the warmer months. Dwight Mosley Playground and Taft Field

The playground has a variety of play structures suited to different age groups, with swings, slides, and climbing features that keep children entertained for hours. Right next to the playground, Taft Field is an open sports field popular for various recreational activities.
