Hurry– don’t miss The Hula-Hoopin Queen!

March 31, 2023

The Hula-Hoopin Queen is based on the Oprah Winfrey recommended picture book, The Hula-Hoopin’ Queen by Thelma Lynne Godin and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton. The play is adapted by Gloria Bond Clunie and directed by Angelisa Gillyard. Now, Helen Hayes Award recommended!

Kameeka is confident that today she will finally beat her rival, Jamara, and become the Hula-Hoopin’ Queen of 139th Street in Harlem. But she has to prepare for Miz Adeline’s birthday party, and almost ruins the day. Until Miz Adeline confesses that she’s also got the itch–the hula-hoopin’ itch! Her fingers start snappin’. Her hips start swingin’. Soon everyone’s hips are swinging as the party spills out onto the street.

I had the pleasure of taking three second grade girls and they were on the edge of their seats the entire show. The singing and the dancing are phenomenal and catchy as is the adorable stage that makes you feel like you are in the city. The is an intergenerational story which ties together family and community. It left us on a search for the picture book so we can compare the story with the play and experience Kemeeka’s adventure over and over. The girls are all begging for hula-hoops to be allowed at recess now. The show is 75 minutes with no intermission. The show is only at Imagination Stage through April 8, so buy tickets here!!

This performance takes place at Imagination Stage: 4908 Auburn Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814

Imagination Stage is a nationally-recognized theatre arts center in Bethesda, MD, respected for more than 43 years of high-quality, innovative programming. Each year, it produces several professional theatre productions for children ages 1+ and hosts classes, camps, and workshops for ages 1-18.

Imagination Stage’s professional productions are also available for field trips, groups, and birthday parties.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at The National

November 20, 2021

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is at The National November 23, 2021 – December 5, 2021

DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL broke box office records for two consecutive years on Broadway during its holiday engagements at the St. James and Hilton theatres in New York. Since then, more than 2.1 million theatregoers across America have been delighted by this heart-warming holiday musical, which The New York Times praised as “100 times better than any bedtime story” and the Gannett papers hailed as “A genius of a show! A total delight for both kids and adults.”

DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” (written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss) from the original animated series. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to steal Christmas away from the Holiday loving Whos. Magnificent sets (John Lee Beatty) and costumes (Robert Morgan) inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. The 2018 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by 3-time Tony Award® winning director, Jack O’Brien.

November 20, 2019

Performances For Young Audiences at The Kennedy Center presents Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, on stage from Saturday, November 23, 2019 – Sunday, January 5, 2020.

Hop on board for an unforgettable ride with the Pigeon. Whatever you do, don’t let the Pigeon star in his own musical production! It’s not easy being the Pigeon—you never get to do ANYTHING! Starring an innovative mix of actors, puppets, songs, and feathers, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (The Musical) is sure to get everyone’s wings flapping.

With a script written by Mo Willems, the creator of the #1 New York Times best-selling, Caldecott Honor award–winning “Pigeon” picture books, along with longtime collaborator and Disney Jr.’s Muppet Babies executive producer Mr. Warburton, and featuring music by Deborah Wicks La Puma, the composer behind Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play!, this comedic musical production is even more fun than staying up late and having a hot dog party!
