The kids are living for Friday! With Halloween being on a Friday, we have the longest celebrating to do, with two weekends of parties and parades. But, don’t forget about the apple and pumpkin picking– here’s the guide!  The weather this week looks amazing so take advantage of the festivities. 

Monday-

9:30am-11:00am: Rise and Rhyme at Busboys and Poets

Rise + Rhyme is a weekly Busboys and Poets series for local stay-at-home parents and early rising families of all kinds! Featuring performances and stories for children ages 5 and under. This week Jessica “Culture Queen” Smith is a Master Teaching & Performance Artist who creates fun and cultural experiences for your royal children!

Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.

Come sing-along to your favorite songs. Grab a treat in the cafe afterwards or hang out reading books.

11:00am and 12:00pm: Mr. Gabe at Cox Farms

A perfect way to explore a new farm and fall festival. The farm opens at 10:00am so get there early to play and then catch the concert(s).

Tuesday-

10:00am-11:00am: Make Meaning presents “Mini Mornings”

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson is the featured story and afterwards your child will engage in a creative activity that relates. Let’s make our witch and friends proud by designing a Halloween cookie with all the fun toppings this season has to offer. $15 for ages 2-5.

10:00am: Tudor Tots: Fall Frolic

Tudor Place has enchanted young children for 200 years. Experience it yourself Tuesday mornings, as you meet to read, sing, and play in the gardens and historic spaces. This family-friendly program offers a new theme each week, from “adventurous animals” to “growing gardens” and more. Children will participate in interactive read-alouds, songs, and themed movements related to the week’s topic, sharing a tranquil setting with the grown-ups who care for them. Sign up for one class or all of the classes that run through November 25. Parents/caregivers remain with children.

It’s never too early to learn the infectious dance of the world’s 5th largest country and there’s no better teacher then Zezeh Zax– a dancer, professional performer of Brazilian samba and founder of the ZEZEH BRAZIL Dance Troupe. Get your baby movin and groovin!

!Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres! is a sure bet every time. Children of various ages enjoy this interactive show that teaches Spanish language and Latin American culture.

Do you have a tiny treasure in a snuggly? Looking for ways to get out of the house, and learn? Join us each Thursday for a 45-minute guided tour of the Conservatory. Each week will be a different exploration. This program is designed for parents and care providers who have a tiny one in a snuggly. Please note: Due to narrow paths and the nature of this program, they cannot support strollers or older siblings.

10:30am: Boogie Babes presents Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres at Eastern Market

Our most popular show of the week! Join us at Historic Eastern Market’s North Hall (closest to South Carolina) for a lively concert, grab lunch and shop for dinner. Access to the North Hall via the market for Boogie Babes. Eastern Market Metro is two short blocks away.

10:30am: The Great Zucchini at Jammin Java

Get tickets here for The Great Zucchini, Washington’s funniest and most magical preschool and kindergarten entertainer, performs a colorful magic show where every child is a star and guaranteed to laugh. Experience the excitement of the children when they get to learn a magic trick at the end of show.

11:00am: Flights of Fancy Storytime at The National Air and Space Museum

Museum staff read stories about famous aviators, hot-air balloon flights, trips to Mars, characters visible in the night sky, or creatures that have their own wings. Each session includes one story and a hands-on activity. Space Case by Edward Marshall is the featured story.

5:00pm-7:00pm: Trick-or-Treat (a day early) at Bethesda Row
Halloween will come a night early at Bethesda Row, where shops and restaurants will host youngsters as they trick-or-treat. The stores will offer deals, live entertainment and trick-or-treating for the kids. There will also be a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to the Paper Source.

Friday- Happy Halloween!!!!

10:30am: The Singing Lizard concert at Grassroots Gourmet
Special Halloween Show FREE and open to all! The Singing Lizard is back at your favorite bakery in Bloomingdale! Come early and get a delicious treat and a spot in the front and LET’S ROCK! This event will be filmed. Waivers are available at Grassroots Gourmet to accept or decline filming. Open Donation.

10:30am: grandsons, jr at Jammin Java

the grandsons, Jr., is the kids band version of DC-area roots rock superstars, The Grandsons. Kids and their parents will dig the upbeat mix of rock, swing, New Orleans R&B, country, latin music we call Americana. Over the past 25 years performing as The Grandsons, the band has noticed that many of their songs resonate with the younger crowd. As the grandsons, Jr., they combine new material learned especially for the younger set, with Grandsons tunes that have always been popular with the kids. Tickets are $5.

2:00pm-4:00pm: Afternoon Aviators at College Park Aviation Museum

Afternoon Aviators is a weekly series for children ages five and up. Join us for fun hands-on aviation themed activities. Activities range from making your own paper airplane to playing a game of aviation bingo. This program is held every Friday from 2pm to 4pm and is free with regular museum admission.

3:30pm-6:30pm: Trick-or-Treating at Mount Vernon
Join the costumed cast of interpreters for a special opportunity to trick-or-treat in the historic area. A special scavenger hunt is available for our more adventurous guests. All trick-or-treaters are invited to join in the children’s costume parade around the Mansion at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best “George” and “Martha” costumes!  Participate in a Halloween craft activity in the greenhouse. Special trade demonstrations, like 18th-century wool carding, spinning and fish net making, will take place in the historic area. Listen to Halloween-themed stories in the straw bale amphitheater, enjoy colonial games and dancing demonstrations, and take a wagon ride. $10/adults and $5/child.

4:00pm: Old School Pre-School Musical Foundations at Bloombars

Join renowned jazz vocalist and music educator Rochelle Rice on a music history journey traversing various genre’s from generation past to present. Parents and little ones learn about the lives and music of America’s greatest performers through interactive musical activities, dancing, singing, and storytelling. From Mozart to Mahalia Jackson, the goal is to nurture well-rounded music lovers and inspire early learning through the arts.

4:00pm-6:00pm: Spooktacular Trick or Treat along Connecticut Ave
Sponsored by the businesses along the Avenue. Kids can safely walk up the street “trick-or-treating” as the businesses are set-up outside. Starting at Livingston St and going up towards Chevy Chase Circle.

5:00pm: The Loser’s Lounge & Halloween BOOgie Down at The Kennedy Ccnter (Millennium Stage)
Learn dance steps to the “Monster Mash,” “Time Warp,” and “Thriller.” Test drive your moves with one of New York City’s best party bands, The Loser’s Lounge. Dance lessons by Quynn Johnson begin at 5 p.m., with live music starting at 6 p.m. Wear your most creative costume for the chance to win fabulous prizes in the following categories: Best Kid Costume (ages 6 and under, 7-12, 13-17);Best Character (TV, movies, theater, literature, comics, you name it! Extra points if it is Kennedy Center-related!); Funniest (Here’s your chance to be ironic, clever, or just plain silly!); Scariest(Need we say more??). In the spirit of creativity, preference will be given to homemade costumes.

5:15pm: Glover Park Halloween Parade
The parade is a great way to kick off Halloween, and we will conclude in time for trick or treating. Strollers, wagons, etc. are welcome. Meet at the stairs outside Stoddert Elementary (Calvert Street side). If you live on the parade route, come out to cheer for the children in the neighborhood!

5:30pm-7:30pm: Halloween on the Hill
The block of 7th Street SE next to Eastern Market will be closed to traffic. Hayrides, moon bounces, goody giveaways, and even a mini carousel. Come out and see all of the kiddos dressed up and having a ghostly time.
