Weekend Adventures: Get outdoors at Family Garden Day, MoCo Farm Tour and a day at Ticonderoga Farm

Montgomery County Farm Tour and Harvest Sale will take place Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm to celebrate its agricultural heritage, promote local farms, and indulge in seasonally fresh food.  Celebrate Montgomery County’s unique agricultural treasures by spending a day or two in the country petting farm animals, going on a hay ride or enjoying a freshly-picked lunch by a scenic pond. Support the local agricultural economy by purchasing fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants and more at one of seventeen participating farms, plus, this year includes a special photo contest.

Citi Open is in town and tennis matches will be held through Aug.3. William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center is easy to get to and sits in Rock Creek Park.

Saturday-

9:30am and 11:00am: The National Theatre presents Mary Ann Jung: Pee Wee Pirates
(1312 Pennsylvania Ave NW)
Ahoy there, mattes! Set sail with Captain Jean, the Pirate Queen on a rollicking ’round the world adventure in sailing. In this fast-moving show, kids volunteer for duty hoisting the rigging, swabbing the deck and looking for land while learning details of foreign cultures the world over. Free performance, tickets distributed 30 minutes prior to each show.

10:00am-12:30pm: Family Garden Day at US National Arboretum
(The Washington Youth Garden: 3501 New York Ave NE Washington, DC 20002)
Family Garden Days are full of delicious gardening adventures. First, Washington Youth Garden instructors facilitate hands-on garden activities and projects. Then we all work together to harvest the freshest produce in the garden. Finally, chefs and nutrition experts facilitate participatory cooking demonstrations for a colorful seasonal dish we enjoy together. Come prepared to get your hands dirty and taste some delicious and nutritious garden bounty. Fun for the whole family! Register to attend.  Next Family Garden Day is Aug. 9, register for that one here. $10 Adult/$5 Child.

10:30am: GIGS and Kidzbill present Junior Jams: Rainbow Rock

Get ready to rock the rainbow with this interactive performance! The Rainbow Lady (Kate Moran), joined by some of her friends, Guitarmony Gus (Derek Evry), Sgt. Bam Sam (Sam Carolla), Captain Toe Tappin (Kevin de Souza), Princess Fiddlesticks (Lynn Rovelli), or Bassious Berry (Matt Berry), to make up the Rainbow Band, will entertain your little ones with a combination of classic and original children’s tunes. Always on hand, inside the box of fun, tambourines, shakers and more for your little one to join in the fun. Are you ready to rock the rainbow?! $6 Advance/$8 Door (cash only).

Explore Italy The Golden Artist: Giotto through the story A Boy Named Giotto. Meet a shepherd boy named Giotto who becomes a famous artist, and discover how he made his paintings with gold. Stories in Art introduces children ages 4 to 7 to artists through careful looking, storytelling, and hands-on experimentation. Led by museum educators, each program includes reading a children’s book, exploring one work of art in the galleries, and completing a simple hands–on activity. Each program is approximately 60 minutes. Ages 4-7 recommended. (Saturday, July 26 at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30. Sunday, July 27 at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30. Monday, July 28 at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30)

Crawlers through age 4 welcome with caregivers. Involves movement, songs, and playful yoga poses. No experience or mat is required. Register online or in person.

10:00am: Harriet the Spy at Avalon Theatre
(5612 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20015)
Calling all super spies! As a partner of Politics & Prose’s Summer Sleuths’ reading program, the Avalon will present a special screening of HARRIET THE SPY to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Louise Fitzhugh’s classic novel. $5 for non-members / $3 for members. Buy tickets in advance.

10:00am-5:00pm: Parents Day at Ticonderoga Farms

For the first time ever in recognition of Parents Day we will be allowing one parent per paying child FREE! We will have some family directed games as well as the usual “Amazing Farm Fun” hayrides, animals, slides, giant jumping pillow, panda puzzle, and so much more!

Pinkalicious, The Musical, at Adventure Theatre has received the requisite votes from HHA judges to be Helen Hayes Awards Recommended! It’s also one of Washington Theatre Guide‘s Top Five Shows of the Week! Shows run at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.Saturdays & Sundays and 10:30 a.m. Mondays. The final evening performance is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8. Buy tickets now.
