Weekend Picks: Drop off art class, George Washington’s birthday and sledding

You’re probably ready to get out of the house after the amazing amount of snow we got. We’ve got some indoor and outdoor weekend picks for the family along with a few sledding hills that you may be interested in zipping down. Have you checked out the new bowling alley in Georgetown?

Saturday

9:00am- 5:00pm Celebrate George Washington’s 282nd Birthday at Mount Vernon!
(3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway,  Mount Vernon, VA 22121)
Mt. Vernon has a weekend full of activities to celebrate General Washington’s 282nd birthday. Breakfast with George Washington, wreath laying ceremony, dancing demonstrations and musical celebrations are a few of the planned activities.  Celebrations go on all weekend: Feb. 15-17, Free Admission on Feb. 17! I’ve taken advantage of the complimentary entry and it is crowded but still worth going if that’s the only time you can make the visit.  $17 adult/$8/child.

10:00am-12:00pm- Mixed age Art Class at The Children’s Art Studio
(4723 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC. 20016)
The class is ten hours and meet through the end of March (Session dates: Feb, 15, 22, March 1, 8, and 22). Ages 5 and up and is a drop off class. $300.  Must email to enroll. 

10:00am-12:00pm- Cartoon Skate at Washington Harbour Ice Skating Rink 
(3000 K St., NW, Washington, D.C.)
We haven’t been brave enough to take our toddler ice skating yet. But this sounds like a fun way to try it out for the first time. Cartoon characters are on ice skates and want to zip around the rink being silly with your little one. $8 kids/$10 adults/$5 skate rental

10:00am and 12:30pm- Teddy Bear Tea at Strathmore Mansion
(10701 Rockville Pike North Bethesda, MD 20852)
Wake up those stuffed animals for Teddy Bear tea. This special tea features a child-friendly menu and children’s music afterwards where they can sing and dance with their friends. $28/pp

10:30am (doors open at 10:00am)- Jammin Java presents The Grandsons Jr
(227 Maple Ave, Vienna, Va. 22180)
One of the areas more popular performers (for the younger crowd) with a mix of swing, rock, country and latin music. Tickets here.

10:30 am (Doors open at 10:00am)– Junior Jams: Dave Brewer and the Pre-K Kings at FNDTN
(FNDTN Gallery & Liveroom – 3762 Howard Ave. Kensington, Md. 20895)
Foundation is a boutique art gallery and intimate live music venue. We’ve seen Dave Brewer and the Pre-K Kings and they are very entertaining.They use stories, props, magic tricks and a constant thread of humor while getting children to dance and move around. $6 advanced/$8 at door

10:30am- Family Fiesta at El Tamarindo
(1785 Florida Ave NW Washington, DC 20009)
Marsha Goodman-Wood will be performing her original melodies that mix generous doses of science and positive social messages into songs that are just plain fun.Stay after the show for El Tamarindo’s delicious food and watch the Olympics on TV.  Children of all ages will enjoy. $5 per child.

 

11:30am-3:00pm- Presidents’ Family Day at The National Portrait Gallery  
(8th and F St NW in the Kogod Courtyard)
Top hats, Lincoln logs, and presidential portraits? Oh my! American Art and the National Portrait Gallery team up again with President Lincoln’s Cottage for our annual Presidents’ Family Day. Begin your holiday weekend with patriotic craft activities, performances, and special guests!

Sunday

12:00pm-5:00pm- Slip, slide, repeat all weekend long on the Ice Slide at St. Elizabeth’s East
(2700 Martin Luther King Avenue SE)
Last weekend for the popular ice slide. Free for kids and $5 for adults. Open Sat-Sun 12-5 and Mon. 11-5. 

1:30pm and 4:00pm- Rumpelstiltskin at Imagination Stage
(4908 Auburn Ave. Bethesda, Md. 20814)
Watch the classic story of how a girl turns straw into gold unfold before your eyes. $12-35 tickets and is recommended for ages 5-10. Playing through March 16.

Family Day at Pinstripes
(3222 M Street NW- inside Shops at Georgetown)
A new bowling alley in the District! They also feature bocce ball and a bistro. Sunday is family day with brunch and dinner specials.
10:00am-2:00pm-Pintastic Brunch Adults $20/KIds 12 and Under $12/Under 5 FREE
Family Day: Kids ages 12 and under eat free after 5:00pm from kids menu.

 6:30pm- 7:30pm- Partner Prenatal Yoga at Lil Omm
(4708 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016)
Spouses, friends, relatives…all are welcome to explore a shared practice communing yoga, breath work, visualization and massage. $30/pair
