The best chocolate in Washington, DC for Valentine’s Day (or anytime)

February 7, 2023

Valentine’s Day for me is just another excuse to shove even more chocolate in my mouth than I did the day before while giving extra tight snuggles to those I love. It also means the quality of the chocolate is definitely better than my typical 3 o’clock pick-me-up from my hidden stash. There are plenty of delicious places to shop this Valentine’s Day for yourself, your love or your Bambinos that don’t include the heart shaped milk chocolate box from the drug store. These are worth the trip, guaranteed while supporting local businesses.

Healthy food delivery services for families in and around Washington, DC

April 18, 2022

I am the shopper of the groceries and the planner of all meals in our house. And yes, I’m also the preparer — lucky me! I enjoy meal planning because I have come to follow a few Instagram food bloggers who haven’t failed me and are reasonably healthy. However, there are times when I loathe trying to figure out what to make for dinner. So I present to you a few tried and true options you will thank me for later. We’ve tried them each service and loved them all for different reasons. We had the meals for lunches and dinners which made for a nice change in our typical routine and the Bambinos enjoyed some breakfast options that were new to them as well.

Just choose whichever selection works best for your needs and lifestyle and don’t forget to use those discount codes we’ve included. All of these meal services also make for a great gift idea for friends who had a new baby, an upcoming dinner you are hosting or to send to someone who may be recovering from an illness or surgery. Regardless of how you use these options, here’s to making meals a little easier and depending on your audience, perhaps a bit more delicious.

Gather Round Family Chef Service

Gather Round Family Chef Service provides a totally customized and effortless dinner experience to help busy families eat great even when life gets crazy. Chef Ariel Voorhees cooks in your kitchen on a weekly or monthly basis, so her meals are cooked just for you and the menus are unique to your family’s preferences.

Gather Round takes the planning, shopping, cooking, and cleanup off your perpetual to-do list so that parents can focus on what’s important: raising a relaxed and healthy family at the dinner table and beyond. Looking for more confidence and joy in the kitchen? Gather Round offers cooking lessons to help you master exactly what you want to learn. And Chef Ariel can help you host a Cooking Lesson Dinner Party in which your group learns together and celebrates its shared efforts with a feast!

Healthy Fresh Meals

Healthy Fresh Meals is a local meal prep and delivery service that was founded in 2016.  Healthy Fresh Meals, aims to provide the DMV with healthy meals that are conveniently delivered to your front door! Eating clean is not always easy, so they’ve made it simple enough to fit every individual’s needs. Whether you are looking to lose weight, live a clean and healthy lifestyle, or build lean muscle mass through a natural diet, Healthy Fresh Meal service has a line of meals to fit your lifestyle including kids meals, family style, vegan and vegetarian, paleo, low carb, and low sodium.  Their meals can be tracked by scanning them into ‘my fitness pal’.  All meals and snacks are prepared weekly from scratch using only fresh ingredients, and packed in heat sealed containers staying fresh all week!  Each meal is a single serving portion. Use the code beltwaybambinos10 and get 10% off your order.

Vegetable & Butcher

Vegetable & Butcher was started because the founders were tired; tired of mediocre food that was marginally healthy; tired of yo-yo’ing between diets that were difficult to sustain; and most importantly, tired of the single-use plastics and plastic packaging that are destroying our planet and knew they could do better.

Healthy and flavorful are not mutually exclusive. Perfectly portioned, plant-based meals made with real ingredients; that is sustainable. Compostable and biodegradable packaging are better than plastic. Period. So they created a company that aligns with their core values: chef-designed, nutritious meals delivered in actually environmentally-friendly packaging.

Guided by the wisdom of generations prior, “eat your greens!,” the meals are primarily plant-based and loaded with vitamins, minerals and other important micronutrients. All of the meals are gluten- and dairy-free and the menu changes with the seasons to ensure that only the freshest, most nutrient-dense ingredients make it to your plate.

Mighty Meals

Founded in 2015 by two fitness professionals and a classically trained chef, MightyMeals believes high-quality, healthy food should be accessible to everyone. The Burke, Virginia company provides a convenient, healthy meal delivery service made with locally sourced ingredients by chefs, offering a wide array of meals on a menu that changes weekly. The mission is to empower people to live healthier lives by being the leading provider of healthy, high-quality, locally sourced, chef-prepared meals that are delivered to you.

Take the guesswork out of your nutrition so you can spend your time doing the things you enjoy. Visit MightyMeals and use code Meal100 to receive $25 off your first 4 orders. MightyMeals is the official meal prep company of DC United, Old Glory DC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

A weekend with kids in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

March 29, 2022

The City of Brotherly Love is a place that is near and dear to our family for a variety of reasons. A few years ago we took a family road trip to Philadelphia and had an absolute blast. An easy car ride or train trip from Washington, DC. The city is so walkable and easy to navigate and has so much to offer families visiting. We’ve put together a very packed 3 day itinerary below but keep in mind you can easily spend all day at the museums if you have time to stay longer.

Day 1:

The BEST way to see a city and have the flexibility to get on and off at various places is the Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour! Visit Philadelphia’s top attractions—like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall—on a full loop. You can select from a 1, 2, or 3-day pass. Board at any of the stops and get to know the city at your own pace, with live commentary.

Walk around The Italian Market where dozens of vendors line the street, selling vegetables, fish, meats, spices and produce from their stalls, while gourmet shops and restaurants occupy storefronts in between.

Lunch & dessert at the Italian Market is such a fun way to experience historic South 9th Street. Angelo’s Pizzeria for cheesesteaks and Isgro for italian pastries and cookies. Eat lunch at the nearby playground at S 10th St & Fitzwater St around the corner from Angelo’s Pizzeria.

Explore The Liberty Bell, housed inside of the Liberty Bell Center which spans almost an entire city block on 6th Street between Market and Chestnut Streets. Entrance to the Liberty Bell Center is free and no tickets are required. Walk across the street to Independence Hall, located on Chestnut Street, between 5th and 6th Streets. Tickets are required for entrance to Independence Hall from March through December. After your tour you can sit in the courtyard on benches and relax and take in all of the history.

Day 2:

Explore The Franklin Institute, one of America’s most celebrated museums—a renowned leader in science and technology. You can spend all day here- it is simply the best! Purchase tickets here.

I love this photo with the reflection of the city in it

Have a late lunch at the famous Reading Terminal Market. For 127 years, Reading Terminal has been providing Philadelphia neighbors with their grocery & meal planning needs and more than ever, we stand committed to being here for our community. You can spend a great deal of time walking around, looking at what each vendor has to offer. Think Union Market but on a much, much larger scale.

Philadelphia is a terrific foodie city, but, for visitors, it can be tricky to know where to find the best places to eat. A walking food tour removes the guesswork. Eat your way through the city, from Reading Terminal Market to Sansom Street, and experience the best of the Philly food scene.

Another amazing way to see the city and is sure to entertain your Bambinos is through the Philly by Night Double Decker Bus Tour! After dinner, climb on board and relax on the double decker bus and learn from the 90 minute tour and drive by 27 attractions. You can also do the double decker tour during the day as well.

Day 3:

Grab a coffee from the first La Colombe location found in Rittenhouse Square and walk to Love Park and take a photo in the iconic park.

Tour Eastern State Penitentiary, which was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious lawbreakers, including “Slick Willie” Sutton and “Scarface” Al Capone. Purchase tickets here.

Philadelphia’s Old City Historic Walking Tour is an informative way to end your weekend as you may visit some places you haven’t seen yet. Walk in the footsteps of America’s Founding Fathers on this walking tour of Philadelphia’s old city. Visit important landmarks such as Christ Church, the Ben Franklin Post Office, Carpenters’ Hall, and Independence Hall as your guide narrates local history.

Play at Please Touch Museum, with two full floors of fun, engaging exhibits, children are empowered to pursue their curiosity and explore the wonder of the world around them and within their own imaginations. Make online reservations here.

Eat & Drink-
If we aren’t stuffed from a food tour, we have some favorite places to eat when we are in Philly-
Osteria
Abe Fisher and any of their other restaurants
Cleavers for cheesesteaks
Great breweries in Philadelphia
You gotta try water ice

Holiday tea in and around Washington, DC

November 23, 2021

Holidays are a time for creating memories, whether it be continuing a family tradition or beginning new ones. I’ve been lucky enough to go to a few high teas; my favorite was at The Plaza Hotel in New York City with my best friend followed by a Holiday Tea at the Willard Intercontinental with family. For those of you looking to take your Bambinos {or go without kids} here’s a list of some venues in our area where you can enjoy tea and crumpets; most with a holiday theme and following covid guidelines.

  • Peter Rabbit Tea at the Ritz Carlton Tysons Corner

Served Saturday & Sunday, 12:00pm to 4:00pm, as part of the regularly served Afternoon Tea. Enjoy the Ritz-Carlton Tea experience with your young ones with a menu especially designed for guests ages 12 and under.

  • Tea with Mrs. B & Santa: December 3 & 24

Creativity is called for every Christmas season.  It is important to create good times and fun memories for all. In years past, Mrs. B and St. Nick often sat together for a private tea party to review the ‘naughty and nice’ list of little children. Now Mrs. B invites young ones to join Santa and her. This is the 11th year for them getting together for tea and you are invited! Please join in what promises to be a merry and memorable time for your children and you.  A festive party like this, as only Mrs. B can create with her team of hard working elves, will be unforgettable for guests.  All ages are welcome. Tickets must be purchased for each person attending. Every child will have professional photos to share with family and friends the week following. This holiday season will be so special by starting it at Tea with Mrs. B. Santa Claus, Mrs. B and her merry, merry team of elves look forward to you joining for this special once-a-year date.

  • The American Girl’s Tea Tysons Corner

Get into the spirit of the season at American Girl’s 2021 Holiday Tea and Treats! We’ll serve a selection of tasty treats and delicious drinks for both kids and adults. Children will enjoy a festive penguin craft; plus, they’ll get a hot cocoa surprise that they can take home as a gift. They also offer holiday events such as Santa Brunch and story times. See a guest review on an afternoon at Tysons.

  • The Mansion on O Street

They offer a Kids Dessert Tea Tour as well as high tea and various other kids holiday events.

  • Peacock Alley Tea at The Willard

The Willard’s Holiday Afternoon Tea is one of the hotel’s most cherished holiday traditions. Seated in the grandeur of Peacock Alley, among the festive decor and elegant sounds of the harp, guests can enjoy a tantalizing array of festive teas, sandwiches and seasonally inspired pastries. You can also schedule private group teas.

  • Strathmore Afternoon Tea

The soothing sounds of local musicians fill the room, as you enjoy Afternoon Tea in the cozy atmosphere of The Shapiro Music Room at Strathmore. They do hold special events around various holidays so check their schedule to plan ahead. Charles Dickens’ Tea and Mrs. Claus Tea are a few of the popular holiday teas.

  • Hillwood Estate, Museum & Garden

Not seeing tea events listed this year

Other establishments that offer tea service, not all with a holiday focus but some with children in mind:
The Tavern at the Henley Park Holiday Tea
Children’s Holiday Tea at The Mandarin Oriental
The Jefferson
Tea Cellar in the Park Hyatt Washington
The St. Regis

34 ways to survive Daylight Savings in and around Washington, DC

November 17, 2021

Most of us dread that date in fall that creeps up and turns our strict routine into havoc; Daylight Savings. For parents, it’s a few months where our time spent outdoors comes to a halt and we wonder how to occupy the remainder of the evening (that used to be so sunny) with our children. And contrary to popular belief, the answer is not an earlier bedtime. Let’s be honest, you can only put on an afternoon movie so many times. Here are a few ideas I’ve compiled from readers as well as my own Daylight Savings adventures to help you get out of the house with your Bambino(s) this fall & winter. Don’t forget to check out our indoor fun guide for even more options!

Ideas for fun outside of your home:

1. Go for a dip at Wilson, Marie Reed or any of DC indoor swimming pools or sign up for swimming lessons at an indoor pool.

2. Bloombars has evening classes such as yoga and Bollywood for kids.

3. Drop by a pet store to observe the animals and maybe see some dogs getting groomed.

4. DC Library holds late afternoon family programs and events. Reserve a room at a public library and have a play date with friends.

5. Isn’t Target obvious?! (Try not to buy everything).

6. Grab a lane and try for a strike at Pinstripes or Bowlero. Dinner is served alongside bowling. Locations in Georgetown, Rockville & Bethesda.

7. Walk around Union Market, grab dinner and shop. Politics & Prose is now located here which is a bonus– get lost in a book or two.

8. Hotel lobbies can be fascinating, especially around the holidays. Plus, they have bathrooms and heat.

9. Get creative at Treehouse Atelier, Red Panda Art Studio, District Dabble Lab, The Loft Collective, Anna Banana or All Fired Up.

10. Child’s Play and Politics and Prose can be great places for your kids to check out new toys and books. Child’s Play has many toys laid out and welcome kids to play with them. Again, try not to buy everything =)

11. Go out to dinner at one of these DC restaurants that offer entertainment for kiddos.

12. Speaking of dinner, there are so many restaurants that offer KIDS EAT FREE throughout the week and weekend. (updating this soon)

13. Grab a flashlight and go on an adventure walk. Bonus if you have time to create a scavenger hunt and if not check out these.

14. Check the bus route and take a random ride. All DC Circulator rides are $1, DC Students (with Kids Ride Free SmarTrip® Card) – free to school and school-related activities and children under 5 – free (with paying adult rider). Metro is also a fun option!

15. Fairmont Hotel has a piano and a pretty garden, is fairly tolerant of children climbing up and down the stairs and enjoying the lobby’s holiday decorations.

16. Kennedy Center Millennium Stage has free, daily shows that begin at 6:00pm. Catch the show or just part of it, explore and walk the long foyer and look at the mirrors, ramps, etc. Be sure to take a look at the new addition; REACH. Go outside onto the terrace and watch the cars on the bridge or boats on the water.

17. Lace up those skates and go ice skate! (will update to 2021 soon)

18. Enroll in a winter class.

19. Dare I say, grocery shop….but my kids love making lists and my youngest loves pushing the cart while I pick up everything she knocks over with said cart. Bonus– if you know of a store with a fun kid-car or kid-cart (Giant & Trader Joes grocery stores are the only one I can think of).

20. Go see a movie! Splurge for some popcorn and a later bedtime.

21. Happy Hour doesn’t have to wait until 5pm….Early dinner or apps (see #11 & #12).

22. Head to a Mall; head to the Apple store, food court or movie theatre. This Mall has a great family area. Chevy Chase Pavilion is a 3-story mall that will keep little kids attention with flashy lights and escalators and even has an underground tunnel that will take you across Wisconsin Ave. to more stores. Of course Tyson’s Corner is the mecca for shoppers but a trek for most of us.

23. Drop-in and play at The Lane.

24. One of these indoor spaces is a great option but check their hours before heading out.

Ideas for fun in your home in case you can’t escape:

1. Bake or cook something with your Bambino(s). Get some ideas or sign up for a class with Tiny Chefs and Together We Cook.

2. Get bath paints or crayons and let your child get artsy and messy in the bath– bonus they can get clean while having fun. Bath bombs are also a hit especially these with surprises inside!

3. Buy this slime kit so you have it on hand! Make your own play doh or slime. While you’re at it, create a sensory box.

4. Arts and crafts can provide endless fun and messes (put your OCD tendencies aside). This is a great starter box that has plenty of supplies.

5. Put on a play– get out that old camcorder and record them. Your iPhone will suffice too 😉

6. Download some educational apps on your device and set a timer.

7. Have your child help organize/fold socks when you’re doing laundry. My littlest loves to “wash” dishes; fill the sing with plenty of soap and give them a sponge or brush and have them wash those dishes that may have piled up.

8. Make a fort, add pillows and blankets and watch a movie, grab a flashlight and/or read stories.

9. Playdates help the time go by, (unless the kids don’t play together) and in that case you’d rather be doing one of the above mentioned activities.

10. Listen to a podcast or subscribe to Pinna.

Cool off with the best ice cream in Washington, DC, Virginia & Maryland

July 7, 2021

We love to make popsicles and homemade ice cream in the summer but we also welcome a scoop (or two) at an ice cream shop! There’s nothing like a good scoop of ice cream or an ice cold popsicle when it’s hot.

State Fair at The Roost – SE, DC

State Fair features playful riffs on composed sundaes using homemade frozen custard, replete with all of the delicious sauces and toppings you’d expect, and several more you won’t. Pastry Chef Allie Cheppa is at the helm of the nostalgic spot, serving up composed sundaes and floats, or build-your-own by mixing and matching custard bases + toppings.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream – Bethesda, MD & NW, DC

THE. BEST. (#notanad) Always a line, definitely worth waiting in, enough said, go and get some scoops, many scoops and report back.

The Baked Bear – Bethesda, MD

Homemade cookies from original recipes and hand-scooped on site, cookies are made with the highest quality ingredients and baked fresh from scratch every day, so you can imagine the aroma flowing from Baked Bear! You can choose your base (brownie, doughnut and/or cookies), then your ice cream flavor followed by toppings and sauces. Don’t forget to ask to have it pressed if you want a warm end result. Recipe uses an all-natural mix made only with rBGH-free cream, pure cane sugar and natural stabilizers.

The best flavors come from the best ingredients.  They use only all-natural cream and milk from a local creamery, just 50 miles from our scoop shop in Washington, DC.  and are proud about the small-batch technique – just a few gallons at a time; allowing to create the highest-quality product and the freshest flavors.

Nicecream Factory – NW, DC & Virginia

Handcrafted ice cream is their passion. They start the process by combining fresh milk and local ingredients from nearby farms. Using a freezing agent, liquid nitrogen, then freeze the ice cream on the spot in front of guests, creating the freshest handcrafted cup of ice cream you can get. Flavors are typical with some fun ones worth trying; white chocolate peanut butter and bananas foster are on my list!

Thomas Sweet – NW, DC

A Georgetown staple. This extensive sweets shop is complete with homemade fudge and chocolates—in addition to ice cream. The specialty here is the one-of-a-kind ‘blend ins’ with homemade ice cream. It’s not a place for the indecisive as they have a chalkboard full of flavors like peanut butter chip, vanilla cherry and our favorite, coffee oreo. Keep in mind that the kiddie-sized cup is very large—about 2 scoops of ice cream.

The Dairy Godmother – Alexandria, VA

This summer, you’ll find some exciting new additions at this custard shop. Stick with what you know and get Wisconsin-style frozen custard in vanilla or chocolate every day, or try the flavor of the day.
