Weekend Picks: Art Festival, Instrument Petting Zoo and DC Shorts

We’ll have a Guide to Fall Festivals out next week! For now, enjoy this weekend, looks like Sunday is the day to be outdoors.

12th Annual Alexandria King Street Art Festival– At this community festival, art enthusiasts discover spectacular paintings, life-size sculptures, jewelry, photography, ceramics and more, offering extraordinary art for every taste. More than $15 million in art will be on display, providing visitors with the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind wares and meet the artists behind the work, hearing firsthand what inspires them.Saturday 10:00am-7:00pm and Sunday 10:00am-5:00pm.

Marvel Universe Live! is at the Patriot Center. Perfect for those Dads who want to relive their youth and for children into the comics and may want to go dressed as their favorite superhero.

Bring your favorite stuffed friend and explore the Teddy Bear Clinic at the National Museum of Health and Medicine with activities and crafts designed to highlight the body, physical fitness and healthy habits. Once Upon a Fairy Time is back with her special fairies and pirates show! Includes stories, wiggling, bubbles and more! Included in your admission! The idea behind PB & Jack is to create a place where both kids and parents can have fun, hang out, and attend activities and classes. PB & Jack opens at 9:00am.

Stories, rhymes, songs, chants, sign language and other early literacy activities for babies 0 to 23 months with an adult. Free tickets will be handed out 30 minutes prior to the program. Space is limited so register here.

Weekend Picks: Bao Bao’s Birthday, Arts in the Park and Thomas and Friends

Maryland Renaissance Festival is this weekend! The festival is free to children 11 and under this weekend. Take a time machine back to medieval times. With plenty of entertainment, including music, joisting, puppetry, pony rides and so much more. Your children will see people dressed up in 16th century outfits. Can’t catch it this weekend? Don’t worry it you can dress like a knight and come any weekend through October 17.  

Friday-

The Chuck Brown Foundation will be giving away 500 drawstring backpacks to children in attendance. In conjunction with OneCity, DPR, DGS, and DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

Weekend Picks: Chickasaw Festival, Brady Rymer and America’s Favorite Pastime

Montgomery County Fair wraps up this weekend.  Fair hours are 10am-12midnight and carnival hours are 12:00pm-12:00am and animal exhibits in Old MacDonald’s Barn are open each day beginning at 3 pm. Weekend Adventures: Get outdoors at Family Garden Day, MoCo Farm Tour and a day at Ticonderoga Farm

Montgomery County Farm Tour and Harvest Sale will take place Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm to celebrate its agricultural heritage, promote local farms, and indulge in seasonally fresh food.  Celebrate Montgomery County’s unique agricultural treasures by spending a day or two in the country petting farm animals, going on a hay ride or enjoying a freshly-picked lunch by a scenic pond. Support the local agricultural economy by purchasing fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants and more at one of seventeen participating farms, plus, this year includes a special photo contest.

Citi Open is in town and tennis matches will be held through Aug.3. William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center is easy to get to and sits in Rock Creek Park.

Saturday-

9:30am and 11:00am: The National Theatre presents Mary Ann Jung: Pee Wee Pirates
(1312 Pennsylvania Ave NW)
Ahoy there, mattes! Set sail with Captain Jean, the Pirate Queen on a rollicking ’round the world adventure in sailing. In this fast-moving show, kids volunteer for duty hoisting the rigging, swabbing the deck and looking for land while learning details of foreign cultures the world over. Free performance, tickets distributed 30 minutes prior to each show.

The Smithsonian’s Discovery Theatre has a new show this week: Soul in Motion Players: Drum and Dance. Showtimes are Tuesday-Friday at 10:15am and 11:30am.

Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.

9:30am-11:00am: Rise and Rhyme at Busboys and Poets
(5531 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville, Md. 20781)
Rise + Rhyme is a weekly Busboys and Poets series for local stay-at-home parents and early rising families of all kinds! Featuring performances and stories for children ages 5 and under. Today’s featured artist is Marsha Goodman-Wood.

10:30am-11:15am: Mr. Knick Knack at Reston Town Center (Pavillon)

Unique, heart-centered music for kids! Free.

Tuesday-  

10:00am-11:00am: Kids in the Garden at Pinstripes

Pinstripes’ new chef, Ryan Ross, will host a free “Kids in the Garden” day in which children of all ages are invited to come by Pinstripes and dig in the dirt while learning about gardening, plants and seeds. Chef will do a demonstration in Pinstripes’ outdoor Chef’s Garden on the process of planting to growing to eating, after which the children will have an opportunity to plant their own seed to take home. Children are welcome to stay for Pinstripes’ Mom & Tots program, a Monday-Friday ongoing program in which kids bowl for $5 and parents bowl for FREE from 10am-noon. Reservations for Kids in the Garden Day can be made by calling 202-625-6500.

10:00am: Museum of Natural History’s Butterfly Pavilion (2nd floor)
(10th St. and Constitution Ave., NW)
Every Tuesday at 10:00am you can get into the magnificent butterfly pavilion for free! Make sure and get a free ticket by the entrance. We visited this last month and were amazed by how many butterflies were flying around, some even landing on a shoulder. Look closely and you could spot a frog under some trees.

7:00pm-10:30pm: NoMa Family Film Night
 features The Lego Movie
(Sursum Corda Plaza, L and First Streets, NW)
Now in its fourth year, the NoMa BID is proud to present Family Film Night at Sursum Corda, where families and children gather for free family-centric movies and free food. Family Film Night will take place on four Tuesdays this summer.
