Disney On Ice guest review

October 11, 2021

Disney On Ice’s Mickey’s Search Party has landed in Fairfax, Virginia with its final show October 11 at 1:00pm, and then will be headed to Baltimore, October 13-17. This previous “On Ice” skeptic says run don’t walk to see this show! Performed in the Eagle Bank Arena on George Mason University’s campus, this magical performance showcases amazing choreography and theatrical talents all tied to the new and not-so-new beloved Disney movies.

The premise of Mickey’s Search Party is that the crowd has to help save Tinkerbell and her magic wand after she has been kidnapped by Captain Hook and his crew of pirates. In order to save Tink, Mickey and his Search Party follow a map that takes the audience along for a ride through multiple Disney classics and characters revealing hidden clues that get us closer to freeing Tinkerbell. The performances are tied to a particular Disney movie, include 1-2 songs, and are each uniquely amazing. The first half of the show includes Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Moana, and Coco. After a 15 minute intermission, you get to see Peter Pan, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, and the grande finale Frozen.

I had fully expected to be leaving at intermission given that the start time was 7:00 pm and my almost-four-year-old hasn’t shown a propendency to sit through anything for more than an hour. I am happy to report that no one even thought about leaving until the very end. We, parents, grandparents, and toddler alike were locked in and enjoyed every moment. For the older generation, the classics brought back some much needed nostalgia (some tears may have been shed), while the Toy Story, Moana, and Frozen performances were mind blowing for the tots. High-flying acrobatics, stunts, and your favorite tunes make it impossible to look away.

A few things to keep in mind as you plan: (1) parking is free and a breeze at Eagle Bank Arena, (2) strollers are allowed but there’s a valet inside, (3) for every six souvenir stands selling $35-40 bubble wands and stuffed characters there is one vendor selling actual food so eat before or be prepared to stand in line for a bit (have no fear, beer and wine are available), (4) the only time you can get something from your seat is before the show and during intermission and that’s limited to cotton candy, snow cones , lemonade, and popcorn, and (5) I think the sweet spot for the younger crowd is 3 years and older and there is no age too old to enjoy.  If you’re on the fence, just pull the trigger on this trip down nostalgia lane.

Review of MOCO Movement Kids in Motion Class

May 1, 2019

Stefanie Harrington a local Mom of three, a personal friend and incredibly talented maternity, birth, newborn and family photographer recently visited MOCO Movement with her toddler and joined the Kids in Motion class.

This month, my daughter and I felt lucky to participate in the Kids in Motion class at the MOCO Movement Center located at 5268A Nicholson Lane, Rockville, MD. I wasn’t familiar with MOCO Movement Center so, in a nutshell, it offers engaging movement classes for children ages 6 months to 12 years, along with occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy by licensed therapists. They offer world class therapy services in a fully inclusive environment, alongside a sibling or peer taking a sports or movement class.

When we walked in, we found lots of books and toys at the entrance, which were a fun distraction for my two-year-old as we took off our shoes and socks (adults may leave their socks on). Ms. Taffany, one of the enthusiastic class instructors, welcomed us into the large gym space, where we could start with some free play. The other kids seem to attend class regularly so they were familiar with the space and already happily playing with toys, sliding or jumping on the trampolines, while we settled in.

After free play, the kids followed along as Ms. Taffany led them through songs and different movements that were fun and age appropriate for the group. The instructors were really great about gently encouraging kids to participate – my daughter was a little unsure of herself while she explored, but Ms. Taffany quickly engaged her by showing her a small slide. My daughter also really enjoyed the music toys and the bubble dance at the end of class – so much so that she didn’t want to go home when the class was over… I was finally able to convince her to leave with me as the next class was starting by promising her that we would be back! Luckily there are several classes and times to choose from.

Classes offered at MOCO Movement:

MOCO Motion (Ages 3-12)
Participants use strength and balance on giant obstacle courses designed with over-sized blocks, tightrope-style lines, trampoline and suspension equipment to find novel and innovative ways to strengthen their bodies and push their limits. Trained instructors tailor classes to each child and help them acquire foundational skills such as jumping, skipping, climbing and running necessary to safely participate in a wide variety of physical activities in their daily lives.

Sports Fundamentals (Ages 3-12)
Prepping your child to get on the right track with a variety of sports. Each class focuses on the fundamental movement skills of each sport.

Move & Groove (Under age 5)
Music and movement class designed to encourage a child’s natural musical abilities in a safe, fun and supportive environment while exercising. Classes are divided into a class for children under two years of age and children ages two to five years old. Children, along with a parent or guardian, will be encouraged to sing, dance, climb on oversized blocks, roll down inclined mats, shake shakers, bang drums and toss scarves around. Instruments provided including castanets, triangles, guitar, boomwhackers, electric guitars, a drum kit, keyboard and many more.

Kids in Motion (Ages 6 months-5 years)
Children and caregivers participate in early learning and preschool activities while having fun in our obstacle course inspired gym.  From circle time to the big adventure, our weekly themes incorporate movement, toy exploration and learning.  Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers participate in strength and balance activates to acquire functional skills such as crawling, walking, jumping and climbing and dancing.

Sporty Tots (Ages 2-5)
A movement class that focuses on foundational sports skills for toddlers. Introduction to ball skills (throwing, catching, kicking..), stick  handling within context of baseball, basketball, and soccer.

Looking for Roberto Clemente at Imagination Stage

May 16, 2016

roberto

What: Looking for Roberto Clemente

When: April 13, 2016- May 22, 2016

Where: Imagination Stage
4908 Auburn Avenue Bethesda, Maryland 20814

Why: Sam and Charlie are best friends and baseball fanatics in Pittsburgh, PA, in the year 1972. Puerto Rican superstar Roberto Clemente is the hero of the Pittsburgh Pirates, having led the team to victory after years of losing. When a mysterious fly ball transforms Sam into a Little League Superstar pitcher, he is invited onto the most prestigious Little League team in town, while Charlie is rejected for being a girl. Charlie forms her own team with the less athletic kids and her new friend Tommy, a boy with a disability. Sam and Charlie ultimately discover what it truly means to be a “hero” when their final game coincides with Clemente’s fateful decision to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

My baseball fanatic son liked watching the characters play “ball” and he enjoyed the backdrop which sometimes used old baseball clips. The show sparked a conversation between my five year old and myself on the topic of including others. The director casts a man who in real life has a disability dreaming of wanting to play ball. It brought an authentic feel to the play and allowed my son to learn about the importance of inclusion. The play did get a bit somber and left the younger audience sad as we learned about the disappearance of Mr. Clemente. However, the end of the play brought the characters all together.

Details:
Running time is 75 minutes with one intermission.

Tickets can be purchased here. Tickets range from $12-$35 each with group and field trip rates available.

Looking for Roberto Clemente is recommended for ages 5+.
