Chocolate buzz anyone? We know it isn’t Valentine’s Day quite yet but this weekend brings a few sweet events to attend as you get ready for the 14th. The highlight of this weekend; The Chocolate Lovers Festival in Fairfax. There will be a puppet show, chocolate tastings, face painting, story time and much more that involves chocolate! Also, February is Maple Sugaring Month at Brookside Nature Center. Every Saturday and Sunday you’ll have an opportunity to experience an American tradition: maple sugaring! Watch the whole maple sugaring process from start to finish. See sap drip from trees and taste it. Watch us boil it down into sweet maple syrup, then sample a tasty treat. Join in the fun and activities and learn something new at this family-friendly program! Space is limited so pre-registration is encouraged.

Weekend Picks: Be My Valentine this President’s Day Weekend

The Kennedy Center Performances for Young Audiences presents: Jack’s Tale: A Mythic Mountain Musical Adventure. This world premiere Kennedy Center co-commission with Nashville Children’s Theatre uses actors and a live bluegrass band to dive deep into the eclectic music traditions of the Appalachians. The result: a delightfully authentic mountain musical! There are 5 shows throughout the weekend, tickets are $20 for the 60 minute musical, best suited for children ages 8+.

It is George Washington’s Birthday Weekend! Celebrate George Washington’s 283rd birthday this weekend with special activities at Mount Vernon! Enjoy a sample of George Washington’s favorite breakfast on February 14-15 (included in admission). Celebrate the national observance of George Washington’s birthday by attending Mount Vernon’s events free-of-charge on February 16! Admission on Monday is free.

10:00am- Baby Loves Disco DMV presents Brunch Box at H St Country Club

From the host who brought the DC area Baby Loves Disco since 2008 and owner of Hex9 Productions – we present “Brunch Box” – a pop up Brunch event for families in the DC area debuting at the wildly popular H Street Country Club in the Atlas Arts District of Washington, DC. Tour the historic mansion in search of Valentine’s Day greetings from long ago. Children then design their own Valentines to take home, drawing artistic inspiration from historic cards in the Tudor Place Archive.

Storytime Family Yoga with Arts and Crafts with Julia Colton. Storytime Yoga is the perfect family workshop for budding bookworms and reluctant readers alike. Drawing on her experience working at Politics & Prose in the Children’s department and as “the best bed-time story reader ever” (according to several moms), teacher Julia Colton was inspired to combine two of her favorite things: books and yoga. Start with “Ish” by Peter H. Reynolds and then play our way through a few classics of children’s literature with time at the end for crafts based on our favorite stories (Ish drawings & butterfly masks). The workshop costs $30. Spend Presidents Day rocking out with a DC favorite. As every family with youngsters in the DC area knows, Rocknoceros (pronounced like rhinoceros) is three guys: Coach Cotton, Williebob, and Boogie Woogie Bennie. They have been making award-winning music for the whole family since 2005.

Brrr– November is here and Fall weather has arrived. I’m ecstatic because that means I’m only 2 weeks away from meeting our second child but I am also fully aware that today was not *that* cold and I still had to run screaming to my car tonight on our way out of Comet Pizza because I was so cold. I’m admittedly a big baby when it comes to cold weather (in my defense I lived in Florida for 6 years). With that being said, I will keep a few events outdoors but it’s that time of the year where I will search for fun indoor events mostly. The heat is on at DC Libraries and you can find the Children’s Library Events for the week here. Also, our Indoor Fun Guide has plenty of places to check off your list this winter and escape the cold.

Rise + Rhyme is a weekly Busboys and Poets series for local stay-at-home parents and early rising families of all kinds! Featuring performances and stories for children ages 5 and under. This week The Singing Lizard is performing.

Weekend Picks: Columbia Heights Day, Fall Festival at American Art Museum and Groovy Nate

In our house we are officially counting down to Halloween (as I’m sure most of you are as well). It helps that there are so many opportunities in our area to wear our costumes and have some Fall Fun. Check our Tricks and Treats post to find what else is going on this weekend!

Saturday-

10:30am: Saturday Morning with Groovy Nate
(227 Maple Ave E, Vienna, VA.)
Groovy Nate is a children’s performer who blends music, puppetry, movement, and comedy into one groovy experience! The shows expose participants to various genres of music and encourage them to move, sing, and play creatively with one another. Doors open at 10:00am. Tickets are $8.

A fun, one-day annual festival to celebrate the neighborhood of Columbia Heights. The festival highlights the local businesses and artists, and it has several activities to entertain all ages. Ranging from eating contests, local musicians, a dunk tank, face painters, an adult tricycle race, family fun field day, and much much more – Columbia Heights Day will entertain you and leave you cherishing the wonderful neighborhood of Columbia Heights! Celebrate the changing seasons with stilt walkers, ghost stories, and a performance by the Banjo Man, Frank Cassel. Enjoy fall-themed craft activities like leaf rubbings or a scavenger hunt to find autumn scenes in the museum’s galleries. Performances at 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. on stage.

The weather made a drastic turn this weekend but this pregnant Mama continued to satisfy her YogiBerry craving. We did however unpack our fleeces and vests from the attic so we could enjoy the weekend a little warmer. Have you been to any of the Orchards or Fall Festivals on our list? The weather has us in the Fall mood and ready to choose the perfect pumpkins.

Weekday Adventures: A kid-friendly Oktoberfest, Fall Frolic and tunes by Mr. Gabe

Thursday-Sunday you can check out the 19th annual Fort Belvoir Oktoberfest. Check out the Kinder Korner schedule so you don’t miss anything. Musical performances, carnival rides and so much more.

A trip to the farm or orchard is a perfect way to break up the week. Check out some local fall festivals to head to. After all, you need to start to decorate your home with pumpkins and begin baking with all of those apples.

Tudor Place has enchanted young children for 200 years. Experience it yourself Tuesday mornings, as you meet to read, sing, and play in the gardens and historic spaces. This family-friendly program offers a new theme each week, from “adventurous animals” to “growing gardens” and more. Children will participate in interactive read-alouds, songs, and themed movements related to the week’s topic, sharing a tranquil setting with the grown-ups who care for them. Sign up for one class or all of the classes that run through November 25. Parents/caregivers remain with children.
