Kansas City Ballet: The Nutcracker at The Kennedy Center: Nov. 23-27
Kansas City Ballet’s seasonal tradition, The Nutcracker, returns to the Kennedy Center to continue our annual holiday presentation of America’s best Nutcrackers. The company’s production is hailed as “positively oozing charm” by The Washington Post, promising grandeur, laughter, and a snowfall of holiday magic!

The Nutcracker on Strings at The Puppet Co. at Glen Echo: Nov. 25-Jan. 1
Join the Puppet Co. for our 34th annual The Nutcracker! This time honored seasonal celebration includes Tchaikovsky’s familiar story of Clara and her prince, with some Puppet Co. nursery rhyme spin. Recommended ages 4+. Run time approximately 50 minutes.

story as the Big Bad Wolf takes on the humbugging lead role. Cinderella, the Three Little Pigs,

Messiah- G. F. Handel at The Washington National Cathedral: Dec. 2-4
A Christmas season tradition: the Cathedral’s soaring architecture and Gothic splendor offers a venue unlike any other to experience Handel’s iconic work. Shortened “Family Edition” available on Saturday at noon. Live webcast available for Sunday’s performance.

Holiday Sing-A-Long at Wolf Trap: Dec. 3
Kick off the holiday season with family and friends at Wolf Trap’s Annual Holiday Sing-A-Long! This musical celebration hosts a performance by the United States Marine Band and a Sing-A-Long of Christmas carols and Hanukkah songs with local choir and vocal groups from the metropolitan Washington area.

The Christmas Revels: Celtic Crossroads: Dec. 10-11 & 16-18
Join Washington Revels to celebrate the season with rousing carol sing-alongs—including a rollicking “Twelve Days of Christmas,” a new “old” Mummers play featuring characters from many traditions, and dancing in the aisles with our multigenerational cast of 80. Enjoy songs of the Old World and new by local favorites the Whiskey Before Breakfast Band; the Highland pipes, great and small; and the majestic sounds of the Washington Revels Brass.

The Mini-Nut at Montgomery College: Dec. 10-11
The Mini-Nut is MYB’s abbreviated version of The Nutcracker geared towards younger audiences. This one hour version is a great introduction to ballet for our youngest theatre goers. The performance is approximately one hour long with no intermission. A perfect holiday mini-treat!

A Muppet Christmas Carol at the Kennedy Center: Dec. 11
Join the Kennedy Center for a FREE film screening in the Justice Forum at the REACH. The Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine).

Postmodern Jukebox: A Very Postmodern Christmas at Strathmore: Dec. 13
Since Scott Bradlee began Postmodern Jukebox out of a basement in Queens in 2011, the project has grown to become a pop culture mainstay. Spinning modern hits into vintage tunes, Postmodern Jukebox introduces audiences around the world to some of the greatest singers, dancers, and musicians on the scene. You may recognize them from such viral arrangements as their 1950s bandstand version of Radiohead’s “Creep,” with over 105 million views on YouTube.

Ballet Theatre of Ukraine Presents: Swan Lake at Strathmore: Dec. 14
Swan Lake is the most famous ballet of classical heritage. His theatrical fate vividly illustrates all the significant aesthetic and artistic changes that the 20th-century ballet theater has undergone. Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece attracted the attention of many choreographers in the world.

An Irish Carol at Keegan Theatre: Dec. 15-31
An original work by Keegan favorite Matthew J. Keenan, AN IRISH CAROL is an homage to Dickens’ classic – told as only the Irish can. This comic and touching play, set in a modern Dublin pub, follows one evening in the life of David, a wealthy pub owner who has lost touch with his own humanity in the interest of self-protection and material success. But on this Christmas Eve – challenged by a voice from the past, provoked by those in the present, and faced with the reality of a lonely future – David’s life may change forever.

Cirque Dreams Holidaze at MGM National Harbor: Dec. 15-18

Weekend picks in and around Washington, DC

There are plenty of ways to spend the weekend outdoors (albeit, dress extremely warm in order for the experience to be a pleasant one). Ice rinks are open, the slopes have snow and typical hikes are more beautiful with a layer of white fluff on the branches. Sounds kind of crazy but our family loves to head to the beach in the winter and see the landscape in a different season. Our area has many beaches and state parks near us as well as marshes and gardens that are fun to walk through in the winter.

9:30am: Saturday Morning Live! Happy Soup
This season will contain five virtual series which will premiere on Facebook and YouTube. From the coziness of your home, you are invited to gather with Natasha and Tia (a pair of very silly humans) to cook up a Happy Soup! They have the recipe, but they need YOUR creativity to bring all of these special and surprising ingredients together for the world. There will be antics, there will be teamwork, there will be HAPPY SOUP!

10:00am: Beethoven Symphonies Abstracted: Mo Willems at The Kennedy Center
Inspired by the genius of Ludwig van Beethoven, inaugural Kennedy Center Education Artist-in-Residence Mo Willems exhibits a series of large-scale abstractions influenced by each of the composer’s nine symphonies. This is your chance to “see” music and “hear” art! This is a free exhibit in the Hall of Nations, taking place through March 20, 2022.

1:30pm & 4:00pm: Corduroy at Imagination Stage
We all need a friend, and Lisa is instantly drawn to the perfectly imperfect teddy bear on display at the department store. If only she can convince her stressed-out mother to buy Corduroy for her! Meanwhile, Corduroy is determined to find his missing button and become worthy of going to a real home. After the store has closed, he goes on a hilariously destructive search–with the Night Watchman in comical pursuit. Full of mischief and clowning, this story of unconditional love, based on the books by Don Freeman, captures both the humanity and the merriment of the holiday season. Best for ages 3-9.

6:30pm-10:30pm: Kids Night Out at Silver Stars Gymnastics
While Silver Stars is known for expertly guiding children through all aspects of balance beam routines, trampolines and rope climbing, Kids’ Night Out offers children the chance to explore the various apparatuses at their own pace. These events take place on the second and fourth Saturday evenings of every month highlighting all the fun of Open Gym, but as a drop-off program. Offering free play, movies, games, pizza and more! Ages 3.5-12.

4:00pm: Dinosaur World Live at Strathmore
When is the last time you took a t. rex for a walk or got to groom a microraptor? Never? Well, now is your chance! Dinosaur World Live takes your family on an adventure across unchartered territories to discover a prehistoric world of astonishing (and remarkably life-like) dinosaurs. Meet a host of impressive creatures, including every child’s favorite flesh-eating giant, the tyrannosaurus rex! Plus, special appearances by triceratops, giraffatitan, segnosaurus, and more.

Winter camps and classes in and around Washington, DC

Thanksgiving camps:

Nov. 24: HoopEd
Throughout the school year, HoopEd offers special, one to five-day sports camps for children, ages 5-13, who are out of school due to Federal holidays, parent-teacher conferences, professional development days and winter/spring break. Camps are held in the gyms and playgrounds of local area schools between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm with after care available until 5:30pm.

Nov. 24: Silver Stars Gymnastics
Throughout camp the kids learn progressive gymnastics skills on all of the four Olympic events: vault, bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. In addition we incorporate other fun equipment: Tumble Trak, Double Mini, Olympic Competitive Trampolines, Rings, Zip Line and Rope.

Nov. 23 & Nov. 24: Squash on Fire
Designed for players of every skill level, our junior camps focus on drills, matchplay, strategy, and fitness. Your kids will make new friends while improving their squash! Thanksgiving camp will run from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm on 11/23 and 11/24 with lunch included, and participants will be broken into groups based on age and playing level. Juniors between 6 – 18 years old are welcome to participate. The cost for one day is $175 per player.

Nov. 26: My Gym Potomac
Drop your kids off for three hours of cool and nonstop fun at My Gym including games, crafts, gymnastics and sports!

Valentine’s Day Card Workshop at the National Postal Museum

The Valentine’s Day Card Workshop at the National Postal Museum is one of the very first events I included in a blog post back in 2014 when I was just staring out. I remember running into an acquaintance that Saturday afternoon, after the card workshop at the National Postal Museum had taken place. She told me she took her kids to the card workshop because she read about it on my blog and thought the event was the perfect way to get into the spirit of Valentine’s Day. She mentioned how crazy her kids went for all of the creative supplies the museum provided and how much fun they all had. Because this workshop is free and no registration is required, pop in when you can and create some cute DIY cards for those you love. More details about the program below…

Homemade love is in the air at the annual Valentine’s Day Card Workshop at the National Postal Museum on February 8th and 9th! Create handmade heartfelt cards to send to your loved ones.

The museum provides a bountiful spread of patterned papers, rubber stamps and postage stamps for decoration, gems and other 3-D embellishments, special cut-out scissors, washi tape, stickers, markers of every color (with a surplus of red and pink of course!) and more. Following their own creative instincts, kids and adults can choose whichever supplies they would like to design one-of-a-kind Valentine greetings.

Once finished, cards can then be placed in envelopes, addressed and adorned with a distinctive National Postal Museum postmark at the museum’s stamp store! How cool is this?! You may want to bring some addresses of those who you will make a card for because in keeping with educating children about the postal service and how mail works, kids can pop their own cards in an official USPS mailbox that is decorated to exactly resemble – none other than – SpongeBob SquarePants!

You will find the event at the National Postal Museum in the lower-level Atrium. For those new to the National Postal Museum, the Atrium is full of various postal transports from over the years, including a real train car, semi-truck (yes, kids can climb in and pretend to drive!), a horse-drawn carriage and airplanes hanging from the ceiling. The layout of the card-making stations and supply tables fosters sharing, friendliness and a sense of community. And the museum’s pleasant staff and volunteers are always available to answer questions, provide examples of completed cards, or help in any other way!

The wondrous themed display of lights at Seneca Creek State Park is a 3.5 mile drive through the enchanted setting taking you past more than 450 illuminated displays and 65 animated vignettes that light up the night.

Festival of Trees– Nov. 29 – Dec. 1
A three-day, family event featuring more than 800 uniquely decorated holiday trees, wreaths and gingerbread houses, live entertainment, over 100 gift boutiques and Santa himself. All gathered to support the children of Kennedy Krieger Institute at the Maryland State Fairgrounds.

City Center Tree Lighting– Nov. 30 at 6:00pm
The evening will include a joyful music performance by The Washington Chorus, balloon artists, face painters, holiday activities and more. NBC4’s Eun Yang hosts the official tree lighting ceremony and countdown. Check out this new month-long community event. The businesses along Lower Georgia Avenue Main Street and the 800 Block of Upshur Street will be decked out with holiday lights. As part of the fun, the local businesses will be competing for the chance to win one of seven different awards for their Holiday Lights displays, and will be organizing amazing holiday events, activities, and promotions throughout the month. Union Station Norweigian Christmas Tree Lighting– Dec. 3, 2019 at 6:00pm
In the Main Hall of Union Station, a consortium of partners will present the annual Norwegian Christmas Tree Lighting to the people of Washington, D.C. This beloved holiday event, which attracted 5,000 guests in 2018, is presented free to the public and will feature performances by The String Queens, whose members have collaborated with artists such as Ledisi, Janelle Monáe, and Common, and the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir.

National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse– Dec. 5 – Jan. 1
The National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony is on December 5 and kicks off the holiday celebrations. You can view the lighting on TV on Dec. 9. Musical groups from Washington D.C. and across the country provide holiday entertainment to the countless visitors for a one of a kind holiday experience set against the backdrop of the National Christmas Tree. 20th Anniversary Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights– Dec. 7 at 5:30 pm
View dozens of brightly lit boats cruise along one mile of the Potomac River shoreline. Enjoy dockside festivities from 2pm to 8pm in Waterfront Park including a pop-up beer garden from Port City Brewing Company and holiday music and giveaways from 97.1 WASH-FM. Take part in hands-on activities including a Letters to Santa postcard station from paper goods boutique Penny Post, a holiday craft activity from AR Workshop Alexandria and a bookmark making station from Old Town Books. Enjoy savory meatballs from Pizzeria Paradiso and a hot chocolate bar from Dolci Gelati. On the Alexandria City Marina, Riverside Taco Company presents a Parade Day Patio Party with hot cider and bottomless bites included in admission. At 3:30pm, Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by fireboat at the Alexandria City Marina to take photos with children and families at the annual Torpedo Factory Art Center Holiday Festival.

The District’s Holiday Boat Parade– Dec. 7, 2019 – 6:00pm-9:00pm
Celebrate the holidays and watch beautifully decorated boats pass by The Wharf. Get into the spirit as you decorate ornaments or warm up by the Camp Wharf fire pit while making a s’more. Go ice skating and sample winter drinks at the Waterfront Beer and Wine Garden. And bring the whole family to meet Santa at the lighted Christmas tree and make memories during this annual DC tradition.

Holly Trolley Fest at National Capital Trolley Museum– Dec. 7-8, 14-15, & 21-22

Light Yards– On display Dec. 7 – Jan. 4
The DC region’s premier outdoor public light art installation, returns for its fourth year at The Yards, with two must-see, worldwide traveling light installations, The Pool, by New York-based Jen Lewin Studio and Angels of Freedom, by Israel-based OGE Group. The Poolwill invite visitors to hop, skip, and jump across 106 interactive circular pads of light, roughly 3 feet in diameter and 2.5 inches tall. As multiple visitors play in The Pool, their movements will come together to create a giant canvas of shifting and fading colors in mesmerizing patterns.A beautiful and social sculptural installation, Angels of Freedom aims to reveal the inner beauties of everyone by visually turning visitors into real-life angels. Visitors will be invited to pose with five giant, neon-colored wings and white halos as a reminder that everybody counts and deserves love.

Ice Maze at City Center DC– Dec. 13 – 15
Get lost in the a-MAZE-ing, magic of the holidays with CityCenterDC’s icy tradition. This year, CityCenterDC is building the largest clear ice maze in the United States built with 110,000 pounds of ice. Washingtonians will not want to escape the towering seven foot walls of this chilly challenge.
