Weekend Picks

Many places take a break around this time of year, but there’s still plenty to do. Be sure and visit Zoo Lights and catch a holiday show! We’ve got plenty of holiday festivities and ice rink info here.

Ice! Featuring Santa Claus is Coming to Town is still going on at The Gaylord National Harbor. Guests can walk-through holiday attraction, kept at a chilly 9 degrees, marvel at two million pounds of hand-carved ice sculpture, have fun on five ice slides, walk and see the 7 individual rooms depicting the story of Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town and see The Frostbite Factory – a live carving zone.

Saturday-

11:00am AND 2:00pm: 9th Annual Rocknoceros Holiday Singalong at Jammin Java
(227 Maple E Vienna, VA)

1:00pm-4:00pm: Portrait Story Days: Dr. Seuss at Portrait Gallery

Listen to a story from our friends at the DC Public Library about author and illustrator Theodore Geisel a.k.a. Dr. Seuss and complete a hands-on art project.  In partnership with Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, DC Public Library.  Free event

2:00pm: The Wizard School Scavenger Hunt  at The National Gallery of Art
(6th and Constitution Avenue NW Washington, DC 20565)
This hunt is designed for kids and adults to do together (recommended ages 10 and up), but all-adult teams will be allowed to compete separately. Kids must be accompanied by adults. The hunt is played on teams of two to six people. Follow in the footsteps of young wizards on a field trip to the National Gallery of Art in search of art that echoes characters, places and enchanted objects in the famed Harry Potter books and movies. Be prepared to track down a powerful sorceress, a Snape-like potions master, flying owls and dragons, Hagrid-like giants, centaurs and unicorns like those you’d see in the Forbidden Forest, strange mermaids and sharks that seem straight out of the Triwizard Tournament, fierce knights in armor, and cloaked and masked figures as scary as any Death Eater or Dementor.  Wizards and muggles alike can play and enjoy this hunt. The hunt is not an addition to or variation on Harry’s adventures, but instead references to the books will provide a surprising bridge to many strange and wonderful works of art. It’s a great way to discover—or rediscover—the museum.

Sunday-

10:00am-12:00pm: Challah Hootenanny at The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington
(6101 Executive Blvd, N Bethesda)
Join PJ Library, The Jewish Food Experience and our partners for a celebration at a family-friendly morning of Jewish bluegrass music, crafts, food fun and more! Featuring a performance by Mama Doni and Eric Lindberg. Please bring a new pair of adult-size socks or gloves. $15 at the door.

10:15am: Tots & Tykes Yoga at Tranquil Space
(1632 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009)
The class involves movement, songs, and
playful yoga poses designed to help little one(s) learn movement concepts
and body awareness. No experience or mat is required!
