Weekend Picks

An exciting program we’ve been to a few times that occurs each Saturday is at Glen Echo: Saturday Art Explorers. This Saturday it will be from 11:15am-1:00pm (slightly different time than usual). Drop in for an art activity and play in the Candy Corner Studio for $10, no need to pre-register. Play on the playground afterwards, look around the Glen Echo Park Aquarium or catch a show at Adventure Theatre or the Puppet Co.

Saturday-

10:00am-3:00pm: African American Pioneers in Aviation and Space at National Air & Space Museum
(Independence Ave at 6th St)
Each February, the Museum celebrates the significant contributions African Americans have made to flight and space exploration despite the overwhelming obstacles they had to overcome. Visitors enjoy presentations, hands-on activities, and stories, and may have the opportunity to meet astronauts, fighter pilots, and others who will share stories of their challenges and accomplishments. They also learn about inspiring historic figures like Bessie Coleman through reenactments or story times.

10:00am: The RTTS’s at Avalon Theatre
(5612 Connecticut Ave NW)
Avalon favorite the RTTs (also known as the Rhodes Tavern Troubadours) bring their toe-tapping, award-winning, original roots rock back this winter! The whole family will want to dance along as they play hits like “Snack Time” and “Turn it Up, Mommy.” Tickets: $9.00 / $7.00 for Avalon members (Children under 2 are free).

10:00am-1:00pm: Puppet Festival
(Alden Theatre, 1234 Ingleside Ave.)
The festival consists of two 45 minute shows along with puppet making stations. Jim West Puppets will perform “Aesops Fables” at 10:30 followed by Crabgrass Puppets with “African Adventure Tales” at 11:30. Puppet-making booths will be open from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The booths are self-guided so parents can create puppets with their children.  Tickets are required for all participants over the age of 2.

10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm: Steve Songs at Jammin Java
(227 Maple Ave. Vienna, VA. 22180)
Steve Roslonek of SteveSongs has been writing and performing his award-winning music for kids and families for the past fifteen years. Steve blends participatory songs, clever stories and great melodies to create what the Boston Globe called “not just a musical journey but an entertaining, interactive and educational one.”

Sunday-

10:00am-10:45am: Sunday Funday at Imagination Stage
(4908 Auburn Avenue Bethesda, Maryland 20814)
We invite you and your child to bring your favorite stories to life through dramatic play activities, movement, music, and visual art. Each session you leave with a completed craft, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home. These popular workshops are themed around beloved children’s books. Story this week: Little Blue Truck. Best for ages 3-5. Tickets are $10.

There’s plenty of wonderful theatre productions going on also!
