Weekend Picks: September 23-25

Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical at Adventure Theatre kicks off this weekend!

Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am-7:00pm Maryland Renaissance Festival will be joisting and serving up lots of turkey legs weekends through October 23.  The festival is free to children 11 and under. Take a time machine back to medieval times. With plenty of entertainment, including music, joisting, puppetry, pony rides and so much more. Your children will see people dressed up in 16th century outfits. Dress like a knight and come participate!

Calling ALL bookworms, this event is for you. Fun for everyone, you can attend signings, Q+A’s, read-alongs and so much more. Make sure to check out the Children’s Guide.

10:30am: Jungle Gym Jam & Friends featuring Marsha Goodman-Wood
(227 Maple Ave E Vienna, VA 22180)
Back for their third Jammin’ Java appearance, Jason and Amy Didner, appearing as the Jungle Gym Jam, have been traveling throughout the mid-Altantic states bringing their authentic love for Jersey Shore rock-n-roll and their knack for entertaining kids and their grown-ups to famous beachfront locations like the Coney Island boardwalk, Jones Beach and Asbury Park’s legendary Stone Pony. Marsha Goodman-Wood is a DC-based singer/songwriter, known for shows that are entertaining for adults as well as kids! Marsha’s concerts are fun, playful, and educational.

10:30am-11:15am: Saturday Song Circle at Imagination Stage

You and your child are invited to a fun, interactive musical experience! An Early Childhood Teaching Artist explores a popular children’s book with your family through song and musical instruments, and you will receive a list of all the songs to practice at home. Activities in Saturday Song Circle are best for 1-3 year-olds but 4-5 year-old siblings and friends are also welcome to join in the fun. Featured book: Baby Beluga

11:00am-4:00pm: Leesburg Airshow
(Leesburg Executive Airport)
7th Annual Leesburg Airshow will take to the skies once again with thrilling aerobatic demonstrations, sky divers and more! The main show will begin at 1:00pm.

11:00am-4:00pm: College Park Day at College Park Aviation Museum & Airport
(1985 Corporal Frank Scott Drive, College Park, MD 20740)
Find out who flies over your head every day.  Get an up close look a variety helicopters and say hello to their pilots and crews.  Enjoy a tour of College Park Airport’s brand new Operations Building.  College Park Aviation Museum will be open free of charge to the public as part of 2016 College Park Day. Free event.

4:15pm: Tots & Tykes Yoga at Tranquil Space
(1632 17th ST., NW Washington, DC 20009)
The class uses songs, rhymes, and games to introduce body awareness and movement concepts to kiddos from crawlers through age 4. No yoga mat or experience is required. Pre-registration is available here.

Sunday-

10:00am: Rosh Hashanah STEM Event
(JPDS-NC’s South Campus, located at 4715 16th St, NW Washington, DC 20011)
Join JPDS-NC with your 3 to 6 year old for a Design, Thinking and STEM Rosh Hashanah Event. We will explore Rosh Hashanah with Engineer Ari and your 3 to 6 year old child through a STEM activity utilizing design-thinking methods. Get your child prototyping, thinking like an engineer, and designing with empathy while learning about Rosh Hashanah. We will provide a story, snacks, and an engaging morning. The event is free, but you must RSVP lindsey.marks@jpds.org

10:00am-10:45am: Sunday Fun-Day at Imagination Stage

We invite you and your child to bring your favorite stories to life through dramatic play activities, movement, music, and visual art. Each session, you leave with a special take-home item we used or created that day, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home. Activities in Sunday Fun-Day are most appropriate to 3-5 year-olds but 1-2 year-old siblings and friends are also welcome! Featured book: Mouse Paint

11:00am-4:00pm: Glen Echo’s Then & Wow!
(7300 MacArthur Blvd. Glen Echo, MD 20812)
Then & Wow! is the Glen Echo Park Partnership’s annual family festival celebrating the Park’s revitalization as an arts center and recalling its history, when the site was an amusement park. The event features kiddie rides, moon bounce and arcade games, as well as videos and an exhibition on the Park’s history. Admission to the park is free. Rides and some activities require tickets.

11:00am-7:00pm: Turkish Festival
(Between 12th and 14th St. Pennsylvania Ave NW, DC)
Dancing, singing, lots of delicious food, shopping and more!

12:00pm-4:00pm: Fall Garden Day at The National Cathedral
(Bishop’s Garden and Lawn)
Join us as we celebrate our Centennial with a fun family afternoon in the garden! Food for sale, featuring Rocklands Barbecue, Music, Croquet and other games on the lawn, Garden docents to answer all your questions, Herb Cottage mini-cart with specialty jam, tea, and other gifts for sale, Free tote bags and “Color the Cathedral Close” coloring books, Bring your picnic blanket, relax with family and friends, and enjoy the Bishop’s Garden in all its September splendor! Free and open to the public.

1:00pm-2:15pm: Sunday Crafternoon:Stitching and Lacing at Little Loft
(7007 Carroll Ave Takoma Park, MD 20912)
Afternoon activity time! Kids love being empowered to make their own toys, gifts, and practical items. We’ll start out with a simple lacing activity and move into embroidery using simple stitching patterns. Great for ages 5-9. $35, register
