Weekend Picks: Ukelele Festival, Dino Rock & Ultimate MegaMAZE

The forecast calls for an amazing weekend! Check out the Harbor Spray Park at Lee District for a day of fun splashing around in the sprays and water. Theres a great playground steps away as well with ample spots to picnic. Worth the drive from DC. 

The Capital Fringe Festival runs from July 10 to July 27, 2014. Be sure and check out Balloon Plays for the kids. 

 

Saturday-

9:45am-5:00pm: 5th Annual Lake Anne Ukelele Festival
(1609 Washington Plaza, Reston, VA)
The ukulele is the happiest instrument in the world and it spreads joy wherever it appears.Come down and join us rain or shine. You’ll find vendors selling ukuleles of all kinds and hear wonderful music all in the picturesque setting of Lake Anne Plaza in Reston, VA. It will be one of the best days you have all summer!

10:00am-5:00pm: 2nd Annual Duck Duck Splash at Ticonderoga Farms
(26469 Ticonderoga Rd., Chantilly, VA)
With summer starting to heat up, we have decided to help cool you down. Amazing Farm Fun at Ticonderoga  is shaking up the usual by adding in some water! You read that correctly…WATER! A dunk tank for a splash of a good time, a kiddie car wash to clean up any kind of mess, water balloon catch, and so many other water themed activities for both young and old to enjoy! So bring a wet suit and some shoes that you don’t mind getting a little wet or just go with the flow and bring a change of clothes for the car ride home. We are opening our gates to the public for a splash of a good time along with the usual “Amazing Farm Fun”. Hayrides, animals, slides, giant jumping pillow, panda puzzle, and so much more! Admission $10.95, under 2 is free.

10:00am-5:00pm: French Festival at Hillwood Estate
(4155 Linnean Ave. NW. Washington, DC)
Celebrate France’s national holiday and Hillwood-founder Marjorie Merriweather Post’s passion for 18th-century French decorative arts! Enjoy live music and dance performances. Join in the whimsical antics of strolling Mimes and fictitious French Nobles. Take part in French-inspired games and art projects. Admire the exquisite collection of 18th-century French decorative arts collected by Marjorie Merriweather Post, including gallery talks in English and en Français. $18, $15 seniors, $12 Hillwood and Alliance Française members, $10 college students, $5 Children 6-18, free for children under 6. 10:30am: Dino Rock at Wolf Trap Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods
(1551 Trap Road Vienna, Virginia 22182)
Meet Stella Stegosaurus, Tootsie the tap-dancing Triceratops, and their life-size, prehistoric friends for an imaginative introduction in to the world of science, nature, and history. The catchy songs and interactive skits performed by the gifted puppeteers of Grammy-nominated DinoRock have entertained millions of little paleontologists and music lovers for nearly 30 years. Tickets are required for all performances. Children under 2 are free. $10 tickets.

10:30am: GIGS and Kidzbill present Mr. Jon

Folk-rock married duo Jon & Carrie had a decade of playing shows, recording CD’s, and having cool artsy opportunities like being on a T.V. show, being finalists in a national song writing competition, and having international radio play from Belize to Ireland. 10:30am: Rainbow Rock at Jammin Java

Rock the rainbow with your bambino. Classic and original children’s songs will entertain your child.  These talented tunesters will keep you bopping in your socks until you just can’t rock anymore!  Always on hand, inside the box of fun, tambourines, shakers and more for your little one to join in the fun, and if they are feeling like completing their rock star appearance, how about a nice little temporary Rainbow tattoo, from none other than Pattycake Patty or the lovely Rockin Rox Anna. $8; $25/family 4-pack. 1:00pm-3:00pm: Ultimate MegaMAZE at The National Building Museum
(401 F Street NW Washington, D.C. 20001)
Families work together to build the Ultimate MegaMAZE in the Great Hall. Construct a cardboard maze with twisting winding paths, towers, and dead ends. At the end, have fun exploring and finding your way through the maze. Bring boxes of any size and shape or use ones provided. Member Cost: $20 child/$5 adult. Non-Member Cost: $25 child/$10 adult Price includes exhibit tickets and entry to the BIG Maze. Exhibit tickets will be distributed on-site at the Ultimate MegaMAZE event and are valid through September 1, 2014. Program registration is not transferable.  Recommended ages 8 and up.
