Ballet and Nutcracker fans are in for a treat Thanksgiving week with the Kennedy Center debut of Atlanta Ballet and its extraordinary new production, which premiered last December. Washington audiences will be the first to see it outside of Atlanta—a truly spectacular, visually inventive staging set against a fantastical starry night, dominated by oversized storybooks, clocks, and constellations.

National Philharmonic Holiday Singin’ Pops at Strathmore: Dec. 6, 2019
Create memories with your family and friends as you share in the sights and sounds of the holidays at the National Philharmonic’s annual Holiday Singin’ Pops. Join top-level Broadway and international talent for a fun and festive evening featuring fresh new takes on traditional and beloved holiday songs. Broadway singer/actress performer Ali Ewoldt of Phantom of the Opera; Hilary Morrow of the Birdland Jazz Club; international vocalist Kevin Rose; and acclaimed tap dancer Evan Ruggiero, who recently performed at the Oscars, perform holiday favorites such as Santa Baby, I’ll be Home for Christmas, No Place Like Home for the Holidays, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. The evening will include audience participation. Come early to take a festive photo with Santa, decorate an ornament and hear young carolers. Kids 7-17 Free!

Stathmore Children’s Chorus: Great American Folksong for the Holidays at Strathmore: Dec. 8, 2019
Put a little fiddle in your holiday tradition with a spectrum of American folksong! Strathmore Children’s Chorus collaborates with Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer on folk arrangements of holiday gems that celebrate the spirit of the season, including the spiritual “Children Go Where I Send Thee,” “Hine Ma Tov,” “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem,” and “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” plus Appalachian tunes and more. The chorus is accompanied by a stellar lineup of roots musicians on guitar, banjo, fiddle, and hammered dulcimer.

Troupe Vertigo’s acrobats, jugglers and high-flying aerialists join the BSO for this spectacular twist on Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic. This concert is not presented by Strathmore.

A Candlelight Christmas at Strathmore: Dec. 14, 2019
It’s not Christmas without The Washington Chorus! Featuring the National Capital Brass, over 130  singers, organ, sing-alongs, and the magnificent candlelight processional, A Candlelight Christmas  includes popular songs such as The Dream Isaiah Saw, Hallelujah Chorus, and more holiday favorites to fall in love with! The Hip Hop Nutcracker at Strathmore: Dec. 17-19, 2019
This holiday mash-up is back by popular demand! Join Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince as they set off for a magical adventure…in modern day New York City. The Hip Hop Nutcracker features Tchaikovsky’s classic score punched up by all-star contemporary and hip-hop dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and Kurtis Blow, one of hip-hop’s founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set. Innovative visual effects transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of modern urban life. Through this remixed and reimagined version of the holiday classic, The Hip Hop Nutcracker takes us on a journey that celebrates love and community.

National Philharmonic: Handel’s Messiah at Strathmore: Dec. 21-22, 2019
No Christmas celebration is complete without a performance of Handel’s uplifting oratorio Messiah, a work that has delighted and inspired audiences worldwide since its premiere in 1741. The perennial favorite features such timeless highlights as “And the Glory of the Lord” and the “Hallelujah Chorus.” Kids 7-17 Free!

A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theatre: Nov. 21-Dec. 31, 2019
Join the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future as they lead the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey of transformation and redemption. Originally conceived by Michael Baron, this music-infused production captures the magic and joy of Dickens’s Yuletide classic. Acclaimed actor Craig Wallace returns to play Ebenezer Scrooge. This annual production has been a Washington tradition for more than 35 years. Length: 2 hours with one intermission. Recommended for ages 5 and older.

Washington Ballet’s Nutcracker at Warner Theatre: Nov. 23-Dec. 29, 2019
Set to Tchaikovsky’s magical score, this celebrated classic comes to life with intricate, stunning set designs, original period costumes and over 100 dancers including students and trainees from The Washington School of Ballet. It has become the signature Nutcracker of the nation’s capital. With over 40 scheduled performances, The Washington Ballet’s The Nutcracker will transport audiences of all ages into a winter wonderland that has become a lasting holiday tradition not to be missed. This year they will also celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Washington School of Ballet.

Holiday Sing-A-Long at Wolf Trap: Dec. 1, 2019
Kick off the holiday season with family and friends at Wolf Trap’s Annual Holiday Sing-A-Long! This musical celebration hosts a performance by the United States Marine Band and a Sing-A-Long of Christmas carols and Hanukkah songs with local choir and vocal groups from the metropolitan Washington area.

Seasons of Light at Discovery Theater: Weekdays Dec. 2-20, 2019
Joy, warmth, and community illuminate seasonal holiday celebrations the world over. Back for its 20th season, this signature Discovery Theater show celebrates the history and customs of Diwali (Devali), Chanukah, Las Posadas, Ramadan, Sankta Lucia Day, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and the First Nations’ tradition of the Winter Solstice in an interactive event that bridges communities and cultures. CSI: Christmas Scene Investigators at Encore Stage & Studio: December 6-15, 2019
Santa Claus is missing! During the last rehearsal for the annual Christmas Show, the action comes to a screeching halt when the cast discovers that the Santa Claus statue has been stolen! Mrs. Dickens calls in the Clue Club — a group of ambitious and eccentric students who take mystery and detection into the realm of science. Full of more surprises than a fruitcake, the Clue Club finds they have successfully fulfilled their duty as “Christmas Scene Investigators” when they discover the true meaning of Christmas. Recommended for ages 4 and older.

Frosty the Snowman at The Performing Arts Factory: Dec 7-28, 2019
An OVT favorite returns! Developed by the creative team at Other Voices Theatre, Frosty the Snowman is a heartwarming original musical that tells the story of the magic hat that brings Frosty to life and also has the magical ability to transform others who wear it. You can join Frosty and Jack Frost in helping their young friends. Perfect for the young ones and family alike.

The Christmas Revels: A French-Canadian Celebration of the Winter Solstice: Dec. 7-15, 2019
Magic is just around the corner in a rustic village in Europe! As the Winter days grow short, three wandering performers from far-off lands weave music, dance and stories from their cultures into an enchanting and dramatic tale of the Winter Solstice. But when the sun finally sets on the longest night — and darkness seems to stretch on without end — these “Celestial Fools” lead us on a journey into the heavens to reclaim the light and restore its warmth to the world. The cast of over 100, ages 9-90, invites you to join tradition bearers Karim Nagi, Shizumi Shigeto Manale and Mark Novak for this timeless fable. The Mini-Nut at Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center: Dec. 7-8, 2019
MYB’s Mini-Nut is a delightful abbreviated version of our classic The Nutcracker, designed to introduce children to the magic of this family favorite. This beloved holiday tradition with soaring music by Tchaikovsky promises to hold the attention of even the youngest theatergoer. Come see the Nutcracker turn into a handsome Prince, see the battle between the Nutcracker and the Seven Headed Mouse King. Watch the sparkling Snow Queen float through her kingdom. See the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy and the magical residents of The Kingdom of Sweets! Suitable for all ages, this version is less than an hour and performed by cast members from MYB’s full-length production. A perfect holiday mini-treat!

Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show at Atlas Performing Arts Center: Dec. 12-22, 2019
 Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show is the most vibrant holiday celebration in town! This fun, family-friendly performance will have you stomping your feet and clapping your hands to energetic beats from Step Afrika! and special guest, DJ Frosty the Snowman. Over the last eight years, this internationally-renowned percussive dance company has created a contemporary holiday tradition at the Atlas, featuring friendly, furry characters, pre-show instrument-making workshops, photo ops, and even a dance party. Why celebrate the holidays sitting still when you can step with Step Afrika! NOTE: Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show is suited to adults and kids age four and up. Join in the lobby 30 minutes before show time to decorate your own musical instrument so you can make music with Step Afrika! during the performance.

The Nutcracker presented by Maryland Youth Ballet: Dec. 20-26, 2019
Voted both Outstanding Production in Classical Dance and Outstanding Youth Performance by Metro DC Dance Awards, Lees’ version of the holiday classic is a metropolitan area family favorite.  There is something for everyone in this fun and engaging version of The Nutcracker—a huge cannon that fires at the mice, a beautiful growing Christmas tree, whirling flakes in a snowstorm, cute little Ginger Snaps peeking out of a huge Mother Ginger skirt, a lovely Sugar Plum dancing with her handsome Cavalier, and extraordinary costumed characters from the Kingdom of Sweets. With VIP experiences as well as photo ops available.

The Snowy Day and Other Stories by Ezra Jack Keats at Adventure Theatre: February 14–April 5, 2020
This beautiful show follows the character of Peter and his friend Archie around the neighborhood in four of Ezra Jack Keats’ beloved tales, The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie, Goggles!, and A Letter to Amy. Renowned for his tender personality, the character of Peter faces relatable everyday challenges to which children of all ages will find delightfully entertaining. Recommended for all ages.

Indoor Halloween events

The rain looks like it may taper off for a bit between 4-6pm but then storms are likely. Below are a few ways to still get some use out of the costumes and some candy into buckets. Let us know in the comments if there are any indoor events we can add! We will update you tomorrow if any events were postponed to this weekend.

4:00pm-6:00pm: Pumpkin Painting at the LINE DC
It’s Halloween, and The Cup We All Race 4 is teaming up with artist Kasey O’Boyle for a favorite spooky season activity: pumpkin decorating on the front steps of the LINE DC. All paint and supplies provided. The Cup will be serving up hot apple cider and sweet treats. RSVP required to reserve your pumpkin it’ll be held until 4:30pm before releasing to the ghouls and goblins.

4:00pm-6:00pm: Lobby Trick-or-Treating at Brothers And Sisters at the LINE DC
The team at Brothers And Sisters welcomes ghouls and goblins of all ages to the lobby this Halloween: join us for a family-friendly hunt for treats from. Keep your eyes peeled throughout Brothers And Sisters for all manner of Halloween goodies from Pastry Chef Pichet Ong (and maybe a few tricks, too).

5:00pm-9:00pm: Dupont Underground Halloween Party
Join the first Kids Halloween Party at Dupont Underground.This event will feature music, entertainment, and tons of FUN for kids of all ages. Music Provided by DJ HUCK FIN

5:00pm: Ballston Quarter Celebrates Halloween
Halloween is coming to Ballston Quarter! Kids and families are invited to trick-or-treat throughout the mall for fun goodies and special Halloween treats! Favorite movie characters including Spider-Man, Black Panther, Merida, and Wonder Woman, and local mascot Slapshot from the Washington Capitals will also be available for special spooky photos. The evening will be capped off with a showing of Hocus Pocus beginning at dusk in the Plaza, where viewers can enjoy food and drinks from Quarter Market and Ballston Quarter while they watch this favorite throwback movie.

Holiday Tea for families in Washington, DC

Holidays are a time for creating memories, whether it be continuing a family tradition or beginning new ones. I’ve been lucky enough to go to a few high teas; my favorite was at The Plaza Hotel in New York City with my best friend followed by a Holiday Tea at the Willard Intercontinental with family. For those of you looking to take your Bambinos {or go without kids} here’s a list of some venues in our area where you can enjoy tea and crumpets; most with a holiday theme.

  • The Nutcracker Tea Party: December 8, 2019- 11:00am or 3:00pm

Join your favorite Nutcracker characters for a magical morning or afternoon tea party at the grand Willard InterContinental Hotel. Guests will be transported to an enchanting winter wonderland where they will indulge in tea sandwiches, fresh scones, sweet treats, holiday teas, crisp champagne (for the adults), and pose for photos with the iconic Snow Queen and Sugar Plum Fairy. Experience tea time prior to or after the matinee performance of The Washington Ballet’s charmingly-DC The Nutcracker at the historic Warner Theatre.   • Holiday Teen Tea at Tudor Place: December 8, 2019- 12:00pm-2:00pm

Join fellow teens and families for an elegant tea and tour of Tudor Place. Start with a Victorian tea in the 1867 Dower House and enjoy tea sandwiches, scones, desserts, and historic tea blends. Next, take a guided tour of the historic house highlighting festive décor, holiday traditions, and the ways the women of Tudor Place celebrated Christmas. For preteens and teens aged 11+. 

  • Peter Rabbit Tea at the Ritz Carlton Tysons Corner

The Willard’s Holiday Afternoon Tea is one of the hotel’s most cherished holiday traditions. Seated in the grandeur of Peacock Alley, among the festive decor and elegant sounds of the harp, guests can enjoy a tantalizing array of festive teas, sandwiches and seasonally inspired pastries. The soothing sounds of local musicians fill the room, as you enjoy Afternoon Tea in the cozy atmosphere of The Shapiro Music Room at Strathmore. They do hold special events around various holidays so check their schedule to plan ahead. Charles Dickens’ Tea and Mrs. Claus Tea are a few of the popular holiday teas. Afternoon Teas: $25 per person (Stars Price $22.50), Specialty Teas: $29 per person (Stars Price $26.10).

Not holiday specific, however afternoon tea is served on Sundays. Seating is limited, so reservations are encouraged. $28.50 per person inclusive of tax and gratuity. All tea sandwiches and pastries are served family-style.

Experience a lovely fall evening by creating memories and treasuring Jack’s Pumpkin Glow with family and friends. Also enjoy our pumpkin patch, live carving demonstrations and tasty fall food & beverages. This pumpkin wonderland is sure to be an unforgettable fall spectacular.

October 4-27: Eye Spy Train at Wheaton & Eye Spy Train at Cabin John Regional Park
All aboard the Cabin John Eye Spy Halloween Train! This “not so scary” train ride is fun for the whole family – it’s all about fun, not fright! Each child will receive an Eye Spy card before boarding the train. As you ride through the woods of Cabin John Regional Park, look all around to find Halloween friends hiding there, and mark them off the Eye Spy card. They’ll also show free Halloween movies inside the Train Station Party Room and have other fun Halloween activities for the kids. Costumes are encouraged! Please bring a canned food donation for your neighbors in need – they’ll donate them to Manna Food Center. Trains will run Fridays from 4 – 6p, and Saturdays and Sundays beginning October 4 and ending October 27, 10a – 6p.

October 26- 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm: 6th Annual Pumpkin Hunt at Lee-Fendall House
The Lee-Fendall House Annual Halloween Pumpkin Hunt returns to Alexandria! Alexandria’s ghosts and goblins will fill the museum’s garden with hundreds of colorful toy-filled Halloween objects for local children to discover. Other activities include crafts, games, refreshments, spooky stories, and a costume parade. Every participating child will receive a toy pumpkin. All children of elementary school age or younger are eligible to participate in the Halloween Pumpkin Hunt. Older children and adults are welcome to enjoy all other activities. Tickets are available for sale through Eventbrite. Advance tickets are $15 for participating children, and $5 for adults.

The park will be transformed into a full-blown Halloween extravaganza. Pumpkins in the Park is back for its sixth year with a cauldron full of spooky new surprises! Bring your little monsters out to decorate their own pumpkins, play in the moon bounce, and get their faces painted (all for free)! Don your best Halloween costume and march in the 23rd Annual Del Ray Halloween Parade, which historically has attracted thousands of participants. Awards will be given for best pet costume, best decorated business, best decorated home, and best decorated stroller. Awards will be presented in a brief ceremony after the parade, along with refreshments and goodie bags for the children. Adults, children and dogs are all welcome to join and for free. Goodie bags for children are handed out. There is live musical entertainment provided by Mars Rodeo. There will be Goblin Games and activities for the children.

Halloween is coming to Ballston Quarter! Kids and families are invited to trick-or-treat throughout the mall for fun goodies and special Halloween treats! Favorite movie characters including Spider-Man, Black Panther, Merida, and Wonder Woman, and local mascot Slapshot from the Washington Capitals will also be available for special spooky photos. Artist Lilia Ramirez (Nahua) will create an interactive mural featuring La Catrina, one of the most iconic images drawn by Mexican illustrator and printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada. Visitors can honor your loved ones by making paper marigolds, the bright flowers that decorate family ofrendas (altars) set up for the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a festival celebrated by people in Mexico, parts of Central and South America, and many Latino communities across the United States as a way to honor family and friends who have passed away.

Celebrate Halloween with a look at Victorian mourning traditions coupled with stories of tragic deaths and mysterious occurrences at the Lee-Fendall House. Customs such as draping the mirrors after a death, funeral practices, hair jewelry, mourning clothing, and séances will be explored. These tours offer a rare opportunity to see the house after dark. Tickets are $10 through Eventbrite. These tours frequently sell out so the purchase of tickets in advance is strongly recommended. 

October 29- 7:00pm-10:00pm: 17th Street High Heel Race in DuPont Circle
The High Heel Race is one of Washington, DC most unique events with a rich history of “Crossing The Line Since 1986”. Family programs at Strathmore

Strathmore has so much to offer; not only adults but for Bambinos of all ages as well. They have summer camp for kids and teens, a fun backyard summer concert series we attend every year, an annual Uke Festival and Bambinos can be a part of the  Strathmore Children’s Chorus or the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra. Here is a full listing of children’s programs at Strathmore so you don’t miss out! Below we’ve highlighted a few programs currently taking place. 

Children’s Talk & Tour

Young art lovers can get behind the brushstrokes and into the head, heart, and history of the artists with these kid-friendly Saturday tours. Children take part in an educational guided tour of the current exhibitions followed by a hands-on art activity. Ages 7 & up. Accompanying adults are free. Reservations required. All sessions take place at 10:15am in the Mansion.

Saturday Family Jam Sessions

Junior music aficionados spend Saturday mornings singing, playing, and preparing for a lifetime of music appreciation. Four Saturdays this fall, families enjoy diverse and dynamic programs from some of the best storytellers in our area. At Strathmore’s Saturday Family Story Sessions, stories encourage active imagination and come alive through improv, puppetry, songs, and more. Kids and parents alike will be enamored by the epic tales our storytellers spin. Snag a spot in the cozy Mansion Music Room and get up close to the performers—you might even find yourself participating in the story! Ideal for ages 4–8. See Strathmore Kids Tips for this program. BSO Music Box

Back by popular demand! The BSO Music Box concert series is the perfect program for budding little music lovers and takes place at AMP at Pike & Rose. Maria Broom hosts these 30-minute highly engaging and interactive concerts featuring an ensemble of BSO musicians performing light-hearted classical and children’s songs to develop your child’s musicality, creativity, coordination, and literacy. Half an hour prior to each concert, the room fills with a range of musical, creative, and fun activities for children and families, presented by Levine First Music. July 4th celebrations in Washington, DC

Have a safe and fun Independence Day celebrating in the most perfect place; the nation’s capital if you are in town! Be sure to check our Instagram for last minute parades and celebrations. Trip Savvy has compiled a great list of local parades so you can find the perfect one for you here.

8:00am-4:00pm: Various events at the National Archives

8:00am-5:00pm: An American Celebration at Mount Vernon

11:45am-2:00pm: National Independence Day Parade
Get your spot along Constitution Ave NW where the parade will travel from 7th St NW to 17th St NW. Show your kiddos the balloons, floats, military units, bands and much more. Be prepared for a large crowd.

12:00pm-8:00pm: 4th of July Musical Salute at District Wharf
It’s a star-spangled day at The Wharf.  We’ll have live music throughout the day on the Pearl Street, Fish Market and Transit Pier stages. Enjoy an afternoon lunch at the waterfront, then snag a spot on our of our piers or rooftop bars for some of the best fireworks viewing the city has to offer.

3:00pm-10:00pm: Historic Manassas Celebrates America

4:00pm-9:30pm: 8th Annual July Fourth Celebration at Armed Forces Retirement Home
Last year, more than 2,600 people came to the green open space of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington for a gala July 4th celebration. The seventh annual gathering hosted by Friends of the Soldiers Home featured entertainment by the Hortonville, Wisconsin marching band and two Soldiers Home residents, DJ Billy White and singer/guitarist Waymon Lucas Jr. There was facepainting, a bounce house and pond fishing for kids, who mostly enjoyed running amok on the green expanse of the Home’s grounds. There were many food and drink choices, and of course the highlight was viewing fireworks from the National Mall and the neighborhoods surrounding the Soldiers Home.

6:30pm-Midnight: Annapolis Fourth of July

8:00pm-9:30pm: A Capitol Fourth Concert
This July 4th, A Capitol Fourth continues its 39-year tradition of celebrating our nation’s independence on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol building. Two-time Emmy Award-nominated actor and producer John Stamos returns to host the country’s longest-running live national July 4th TV tradition. In years past, gates have opened at 3:00pm and the concert begins at 8:00pm and airs on PBS and can be heard on NPR. Admission is free. They typically have a dress rehearsal on July 3  if you want to skip the larger crowd.

9:07pm: Fireworks
As part of the birthday festivities, the National Park Service and partners host a spectacular Independence Day fireworks show in the heart of the nation’s capital. On July 4, 2019, view a colorful 35-minute fireworks display with DC’s iconic monuments and memorials as a stage. Fireworks are scheduled to illuminate the sky from 9:07 pm to 9:42 pm., weather-permitting.

Father’s Day in and around Washington, DC

Here are a few ways you can spend time with that special Dad in your life this weekend.

Our Father’s Day plan will begin at Milk Bar for a cake creation class with the whole family followed by a picnic dinner at Meridian Hill during the Drum Circle but the last part may change to a family-friendly brewery (We are currently working on an updated post of our own on breweries/wineries, stay tuned!)
