SkySquad will make travel with kids easier this holiday season

November 26, 2019

This post is written by Julie Melnick, founder of SkySquad.

This winter break, forget about stressing at the airport! SkySquad is coming soon to Dulles Airport to make your airport experience easier than ever! SkySquad is an airport service dedicated to improving the customer service experience for anyone who needs an extra hand. They meet customers at the entrance of the airport, or at their car rental drop off, and assist them with everything to get them to their gate calmly and easily.

As a frequent traveler with two young children, I often struggled to carry my carseat, diaper bag, carry on luggage, and my two children. I used to live in Southern California, and traveled often to Florida to see my family with a toddler and baby in tow. About 7 years ago, in 2012, I created a service called Nanny in the Clouds, which was named one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s 100 Brilliant Business Ideas of 2012.

Nanny in the Clouds’ business model called on travelers helping travelers while on the same flight. With over 4,000 registered customers, we certainly had demand, but there was no central location to start. We had customers from San Francisco, Chicago, NY, DC, London, Sydney, and everywhere in between. I knew that I wanted to create a way to improve the customer service experience for travel, but it took several more years before coming up with the new concept.

I created SkySquad with the goal of helping moms just like myself get through the airport with ease. In addition to helping moms and dads, we can also provide help to seniors and those with language barriers, as our assistants are fluent in Spanish, Russian, and Romanian.

SkySquad provides travelers with a personal assistant at the airport. All assistants have childcare experience and are able to assist with luggage, loading items on the security belt, and help navigate through the airport to the gate.

Click here to book an assistant to help you with everything from check in thru security as well as at the gate, all for only $30 per hour. Priceless!

Subscription boxes for children

November 21, 2019

The last thing my children need are more toys this holiday season. I love giving my children (and to others as these subscription boxes make for a great gift!) experiences rather than another toy. Subscription boxes have become a great way for kids to make memories, stay busy creating something hands-on and have an experience where all of the necessary materials come delivered to their doorstep. Choose a topic that interests your child and order a box before committing to receiving one every month or every other month. Many of these subscription services offer first time sign-up deals as you visit the homepage which is an added bonus.

Bookroo: A curated book subscription service for children

October 2, 2019

Bookroo is a monthly subscription for kids ages 0-10 that helps them fall {even more} in love with reading by combining the excitement of opening a gift with the discovery of a new, wrapped, treasured book! The mission is to enable and empower parents to build their children’s book collections in an affordable and exciting way through curated monthly book deliveries. Bookroo believes in the power and impact of the written word in the life of a child and believe it’s never too early to start reading to children. Use this link to get 15% off your first order.

  • Bookroo‘s books are reviewed by a panel of families attending Stanford University.
  • The company is women founded and run, by three sisters-in-law.
  • They offer board, picture, and chapter books.
  • Boxes with picture books come with 2 hardcover books. Boxes with board books come with 3 books. Boxes with chapter books come with 2 chapter books.

  • Order month-to-month, 3 month, 6 month or 12 month. Cancel at ANY time!

Wondering how they choose the books? For the board and picture book boxes, the goal is to send hidden gems rather than classics. For the chapter book box, they send one hidden gem and one admired favorite per box. The books are chosen by in-house reading experts in consultation with librarians, parents and kids alike to help your child build their library, discover new books, and fall in love with reading. They’re focused on books with high quality illustrations, stories, messages and re-readability! The flyers in each box will tell you a little about why they loved each particular book. Because they know it’s important for parents to be aware and engaged, each chapter book box flyer contains information and talking points to help you know what your child will be reading, so you can relax, knowing they’ve carefully selected kid-friendly books. Coding Lab for Kids: Sphero Robot Obstacle Challenge and more at Apple

March 6, 2019

Do more with the Apple products you love and join a creative session! Did you know Today at Apple offers various hands-on and free classes for kids and adults relating to Photography, Video, Music, Coding & Apps, Art & Design and Health & Fitness. Today my 7 year-old attended the Coding Lab for Kids: Sphero Robot Obstacle Challenge which was more than I expected.

The students helped a Sphero robot navigate obstacles using code in the Sphero Edu app on iPad. They explored block-based coding by programming simple movements, adding voice commands, changed colors, and more. The instructor set up obstacles throughout the Apple store and the kids used iPads to program a path for their robot to navigate. iPad devices are provided or you can bring your own. This particular class was recommended for ages 6–12.

Other Programs for Kids & Families:
  • Coding Skills: Programming Robots with Swift Playgrounds
  • Art Lab for Kids: Make Your Own Emoji
  • Music Lab for Kids: Making a Theme Song
  • Photo Lab for Kids: Fun Family Portraits

I find it incredibly annoying when we go out to dinner with our kids and the server comes by and asks them directly if they want apple juice or chocolate milk with their kids meal. Anyone else? Did you know kids consume an average of 21 teaspoons of sugar a day or nearly ten gallons of sugar a year? We are not as strict as we once were with the amount of sugar our kids get, however, juices and sodas are not purchases we make. Instead our kids drink water and milk on a daily basis are are perfectly fine with that.

The city of Baltimore recently put into effect an ordinance that bans restaurants from offering sodas and sugary drinks on kids’ menus – the first city on the East Coast to make this change. Enter the Maryland-based RETHINK Kids Water, whose sole mission has been to reduce children’s sugar intake.  In fact, RETHINK Kids Water is the only boxed water line for kids that’s zero calorie, zero sugar, and zero sodium.

The recipe is the first of its kind, made only of purified water and USDA approved fruit essence, and comes in four fruity flavors: Organic Apple Water, Organic Berry Water, Organic Fruit Punch, and Organic Orange Mango. RETHINK is innovating the kids beverage industry by creating the perfect alternative to juice, and something parents can feel good about giving their kids.

Overall, juice + soda consumption has been in decline and the beverage industry isn’t keeping up with the shift in consumer mindset, especially ignoring a huge (rather untapped) group. With the invention of Punchy, the Hawaiian Punch mascot, in 1962, juice makers figured out that the way to sell sugar to moms was to sell it to their kids. Now, RETHINK has figured out how to get their message across to the market that needs to hear the message the most: the kiddie set.

RETHINK (the brand just announced $6.7M in funding) about the importance of going sugar-free and how RETHINK is disrupting the beverage industry. It’s that important. So next time you pack the lunch, add RETHINK, when it’s your turn to bring drinks to the soccer game, toss RETHINK to the players, picnics + bbq’s are another great place to pack the cooler full of RETHINK.

Sold at over 11,000 stores nationwide, in our area you can find RETHINK at Safeway, Target, Walmart, Shoppers as well as on Amazon.
