We apologize for being MIA and promise once we are back in the swing of school, Beltway Bambinos has big things planned for you all. We are enjoying a few weeks with no summer camp and just family fun being more unplugged than usual. Why did summer fly by so quickly and please slow the clock down {school starts in 10 days for us}!

As a reminder, the coupon code 19NATSKIDS is valid for use THIS WEEKEND as the Nationals take on the Milwaukee Brewers Friday through Sunday! This weekend promises to be action-packed as these two teams continue to fight for playoff position, PLUS the weekend will feature two fun giveaways, with a Patrick Corbin Bobblehead giveaway for fans of all ages on Saturday, and the Sunday kids giveaway, a Teddy Squeezable Toy. Fans who use the coupon code 19NATSKIDS will receive 20% off tickets in select sections for any of the three games this weekend. Also continuing through Labor Day is the Nationals Kids Eat Free program! This initiative offers complimentary meals for Jr. Nationals Kids Club members. Montgomery County Agriculture Fair ends on Saturday. Get your fill of carnival rides, live entertainment, 4-H demonstrations and contests, animals and so much more.

2019 Pokémon World Championship

The 2019 Pokémon World Championship has returned to Washington, DC, from August 16 to 18 at The Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The best players from all over the world will compete for the title of Pokémon TCG, Video Game, or Pokkén Tournament World Champion—and for their share of the prizes! You can have a great time at the Pokémon World Championships even if you aren’t competing in the main event by attending as a spectator. Go see all the battles in person and participate in side events throughout the three-day event.

4:00pm-8:00pm: $2 Family Fun Night at Port Discovery Children’s Museum presented by Ports America
Join Port Discovery for $2 Family Fun Night presented by Ports America Chesapeake from 4-8 PM and explore big new exhibits including The Port (featuring a giant cargo ship!), the four-story SkyClimber, and three floors of other favorite exhibits including Wonders of Water,  Tiny’s Diner, Here We Grow! and more. Admission $2 for individuals ages one and up. Members and children under  one enter free.

5:00pm-8:30pm: Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
The Jazz in the Garden Series begins its 19th season in May. The free concert series features jazz artists performing a wide variety of styles—Brazilian Folk Jazz, Alternative Modern, Blues, Reggae, World Steam Punk, Afro Funk, African Fusion Jazz, Cuban Charanga, Django Guitar, New Orleans Jazz, and more—every Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:30 in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. You can purchase food and adult beverages or bring your own picnic (but no adult bevs are allowed in, purchase them there).

5:00pm-8:00pm: Summer Friday Event at Spring Valley Village
Stop by for jewelry making, face painting, art activities for the kids, shopping, and more! Grab an outdoor seat at one of the delicious restaurants while your kiddos hop from station to station.

5:30pm-8:00pm: Nerf Night at Badlands
Badlands invites kids ages 7+ to join us for an evening of team based challenges! Participants are encouraged to bring the blaster of their choosing and protective eye wear. Badlands will provide the foam darts, a FREE buffet for the kids, and FUN! Be on the lookout for our weekly themed Nerf nights, including Pokemon, Fortnite, Superheros, and much more!

7:00pm-9:00pm: Friday Night Concert Series
The free Capitol Riverfront Friday Night Concert Series is back for its 9th Season. Every Friday night this summer, head to Yards Park to relax and enjoy the river view, fantastic bands, food and beverage, and a large variety of great restaurants within a few minutes walk from the park. Family-friendly lyrics and grassy open space make this an enjoyable event for adults and kids alike.

7:30pm: Aladdin at The Kennedy Center
Discover a whole new world at Disney’s Aladdin, the hit Broadway musical! From the producer of The Lion King comes the timeless story of Aladdin, a thrilling new production filled with unforgettable beauty, magic, comedy, and breathtaking spectacle. Playing through September 7.

Saturday

9:00am-10:30am: Elephant March! Preschool Class at the National Zoo
Stomp your feet and raise your trunk! Follow the herd to learn all about amazing elephants at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Friends of the National Zoo preschool classes are designed for children ages 3-5 to discover a whole new view of the National Zoo. “Adult-and-me” format classes use interactive learning stations, hands-on activities and crafts, Nature Play, and exciting Zoo Walks to engage your child’s sense of wonder and curiosity about wildlife and the natural world. 

10:00am: Saturday Morning at The National: Stone Soup & Other Stories
Anchored in American roots music, Fox and Branch are as much a celebration of being together as it is a musical performance. Audience members are invited to sing along, to dance, and to come onstage to try their hand at the washboard and other musical instruments. Dave Fox and Will Branch strive to create a communal atmosphere of fun and high spirits wherever they play. Everyone has fun at a Fox and Branch show!

11:00am-7:00pm: Around The World Cultural Food Festival
You will be taken on a “day trip around the world” and presented with cuisine, culture and traditions of several countries participating on the event. Please check their website or Facebook page for this year’s participating countries.  There will be a full day schedule of traditional dances on the stage starting with 11:30am! Ethnic arts & crafts, small businesses and non-profit organizations will also be present at the festival! Join for a full day of culture, art, food and performances!

11:30am-3:00pm: Korean Family Day at the National Portrait Gallery
Learn about Korean culture and celebrate the exhibition, ‘Portraits of the World: Korea’ with one-of-a-kind crafts and lively music. 

12:00pm-5:00pm:  Georgia Avenue Day 
A festival at Bruce Monroe Park at Columbia Road and Georgia Avenue, NW. There will be more than 40 vendors selling everything from fine art to clothing.  And food trucks will be present to fill your cravings.  And a stage will fill the park with open mic music and poetry for you to participate and enjoy!  Free!

Sunday

Groovy Nate is a children’s entertainer and Wolf Trap Teaching Artist who creates fun and educational shows using exotic musical instruments and puppet skits— a la Sesame Street meets Parliament/Funkadelic, meshed with The Electric Company, Kraftwerk, and Dub Reggae. The shows encourage children and adults to move, sing, and play creatively with one another, while exposing them to various genres of music. Tickets required for all ages. All adult ticket holders will be able to enjoy our normal weekday happy hour – $4 pours of house cider, $5 craft beer, $6 local wine & $7 cocktails – from 10am-noon. Doors open at 10am. Full food and drink menus will be available. This is a family-friendly event.

3:30pm-4:15pm: Summer Sunday Fun-Day at Imagination Stage: Elephant & Piggie
You and your child will bring your favorite stories to life through dramatic play activities, music, movement, and visual art. Each session you leave with a special take-home item we used or created that day, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home. Best for ages 1-5.

6:00pm: Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor: Learning to See The World of Insects
Nothing says summer like an evening under the stars—and there’s no better way to enjoy the season than Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor. Pack your picnic blankets, grab food to go from one of the delicious dining establishments, and meet at the Plaza’s big screen for a FREE evening of fun for all ages! Please note that movies will begin at 6:00pm and will be shown once. They also feature Date Night Movies on Thursdays at 7:00pm.

Shiver me timbers; Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend is taking over Rock Hall, Maryland all weekend long. Put on those costumes and head to the Eastern Shore for a weekend of swashbuckling fun where you may even walk the plank. See link above for all of the yo-ho fun kids activities, entertainment and a long list of interactive events all weekend long.

Peach Daze Fuzztival at Great Country Farms is this weekend. Get the whole family involved in the Peach fun with our Peach Eating Contest, Peach Pit Spitting Contest and Family Water Games starting at 2pm. Learn how peaches are grown, trimmed and thinned to maximize production on an orchard tour. After picking your own peaches, enjoy peach slushies, peach pies, peach bread, peach ice cream and roasted peach and arugula flatbread pizza in the Roosteraunt, open from 11am-4pm each day. After a fun-filled afternoon on the farm, head up the mountain to Bluemont Vineyard & Dirt Farm Brewing.

10:00am: John Henry the Guitar Playing Man at the Children’s Hour
Sponsored by the House of the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation, Inc., the Children’s Hour is a free, children’s show on the second Saturday of every month that is open to the public.

10:15am: Sound Health: Community Yoga at the Kennedy Center
Join on Saturday mornings for a FREE all-levels vinyasa yoga class in the Grand Foyer–part of the Kennedy Center’s Sound Health program connecting the performing arts to mind-body wellness. An instructor from a different local yoga studio will lead each session.

11:00am-12:00pm: Ice Cream making at Pierce Mill
Come learn about making this hand cranked frozen treat brought over from France by Dolly Madison.  Watch the ingredients being poured into the dasher, help turn the crank, and learn about the brine that freezes the cream.  A historic recipe by Thomas Jefferson with modern adaptation will be available to take away.  Free!

5:00pm-6:30pm: Havdalah Winery Family Picnic Dinner
Explore the sights, sounds and smells of Havdalah — the Jewish ceremony that marks the end of Shabbat and the beginning of a new week. Bring the family, enjoy a picnic (pack a dinner or buy one on site) and welcome in the new week with your Growing Jewish families community. We will celebrate together by sharing stories, exploring the traditional Havdalah set (candles and spices) and more! All are welcome–so bring your friends, family and neighbors for a beautiful evening at the winery! Bring blankets and chairs in case tables fill up. RSVP here.

5:00pm-7:00pm: Lily Ponds Live! Concert
The second Lily Ponds Live Concert of the season is a time where they celebrate visitors, generous supporters, volunteers, and partners for all that support Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens! Bring a chair, blanket, picnic, and all your family and friends. There will be live music, food, and games for kids.

DC VegFest is organized by Compassion Over Killing and Brings Vegan Celebrity Speakers, Entertainers and Chefs to vegans and pre-vegans alike. A free festival featuring plant-based food, entertainment and more than 120 different vendors Vegan food will be served by dozens of vendors including Vegan Treats, Amsterdam Falafelshop, Brewing Good Coffee, Bakeshop DC, Ben & Jerry’s, and YogiDog- Over 100 nonprofit and commercial exhibitors will set up shop for the day: Dr. Bronner’s, A Well-Fed World, Roots Market, Barnard Medical Center, TryVeg.com, and many more.

World’s Fair at the DAR Museum

SAAM is turning into an arcade! Enjoy two days of play with a free, family-friendly annual event for gamers of all levels. Join us on August 3–4, 2019 from 11:30am to 7:00pm for games, good times, and more. This free, family-friendly event invites gamers of all levels to test out new games and replay some of the classics. SAAM Arcade features arcade cabinets, console games, and a selection of indie games centered around a particular theme. This year’s theme, “breaking barriers,” showcases projects that recognize and relish the diversity of gaming audiences, allowing a wide-array of players to see themselves and their interests reflected on screen.

The 71st Annual 4-H Fair and Carnival will take place at Frying Pan Farm Park August 1-4, 2019 for four days of fresh air, farm fun and good times for you, your friends, family and neighbors. You’ll see livestock and 4-H exhibits, enjoy delicious fair food, and you can enter your creation in the fair and try your hand at milking a cow or goat. Don’t miss the carnival rides, games and live entertainment.

The Drive-In at Union Market is back for a seventh season from May through October! Watch great films under the stars on the first Friday of every month. Take school work to another galaxy in our hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a rocket pencil box. Your young aerospace engineer can study the anatomy of a rocket while you construct a handmade case together. Once your rocket pencil box is built, your child can decorate it with paint and stickers. All Kids Workshop attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.

Montgomery County 30th Annual Farm Tour

The Montgomery County 30th Annual Farm Tour has arrived! Head “up county”, breath in that country air and experience 19 farms free of charge, tour some farms, with some farms offering hay rides, pony rides, farm animal petting and fresh-from-the-field produce!

Date night idea has fallen into your lap– Bethesda Outdoor Movies lasts just four nights in downtown Bethesda. Show times begin at 9:00pm at the corner of Norfolk and Auburn Avenues. A limited number of chairs will be provided and attendees are invited to bring their own lawn chairs. Admission is free! 
The final two nights are- Friday: Crazy Rich Asians & Saturday: As Good As It Gets. If seeing an outdoor movie isn’t on your agenda this weekend, check out some live summer music.

The Citi Open is back in DC serving shots through August 4. There is a Kids Day on Sunday from 9:30am-11:30am and admission is free for all kids age 10 and under. Don’t miss a morning of fun-filled activities on Stadium Court.

Washington Nationals are taking on the Dodgers. Sunday is always ‘kids run the bases’ day but the best part is the Nats just launched a kids eat free program.

Kaypi Peru Festival is Friday-Sunday at the National Museum of the American Indian. This event highlights the South American nation’s rich and diverse cultural heritage and traditional arts. Kaypi Perú,which means “This is Peru” in the indigenous language of Quechua, includes an art market, music and dance performances, hands-on activities for kids, a film screening, traditional plants, and Peruvian cuisine. The festival is presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Peru.

Explore the enchanting Japanese-style garden. Hear Japan’s famous Tanabata legend brought to life through story, song, and visual arts by storyteller Tara McGowan. Listen to delightful music, performed by the Washington Toho Koto Society. Write poems and special wishes on colorful strips of paper, called tanzaku, to hang on bamboo, following the traditional Japanese custom to celebrate Tanabata. Decorate a paper lantern, make paper ornaments, try your hand at Japanese calligraphy, and more.

This weekend is going to be HOT, hotter than any weekend we’ve had HOT. Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of indoor options for you and some extra indoor fun here. On the blog there are plenty of other options at the top tab, including fun local, theatre productions. Tap a dip in a pool or waterpark this weekend. The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum will help lead a national celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo missions. On Friday and Saturday, a 17-minute show called “Apollo 50: Go for the Moon” will re-create the launch of Apollo 11 on the Washington Monument.

Help commemorate the 155th anniversary of the battle (which occurred on July 11-12, 1864).  It was the only Civil War battle that occurred in the Nation’s Capital and the only time in the nation’s history that a sitting President (Lincoln) has come under direct enemy fire.

How do you investigate a work of art? This program helps children make careful observations, analyze artists’ choices, ask questions, and use their imagination while exploring works of art. Led by museum educators, each program includes reading a children’s book, exploring one work of art in the galleries, and completing a simple, hands-on art activity. Each program is approximately 60 minutes.

Join us every Saturday for a family-friendly playdate. Guided by a professional art educator, explore one to two galleries through fun, hands-on activities. Geared for families with children ages 4 to 8.

12:00pm: Spinbledon Kids Day
The first-ever SPINBLEDON kids day! Bring the whole family to enjoy instructional lessons on our grass inspired center court, get access to our in house face painters and enjoy cocktails and mocktails so the whole family can participate. The event is absolutely free for all and we have teamed up with Kidz Bop to offer karaoke in the private room, kids activity sheets and even a chance to win tickets to a Kidz Bop concert!

1:00pm AND 6:00pm: Mo Willems & the Storytime All-Stars present: Don’t Let the Pigeon Do Storytime!
Join a Concert Hall Storytime like you’ve never experienced before, featuring your favorite performers from TV, movies, and stand-up. Presenting Mo Willems’s books as sketch comedy, these hilarious performers invite the audience to laugh, sing, and draw along! This hysterical concert variety show is an expanded, fancy-dress version of sold-out performances at the 2018 San Francisco Sketchfest, and not to be missed by fans of comedy, books, or pigeons desperate to do Storytime!

2:00pm-4:00pm: Bastille Day Celebration
Join Tenleytown Main Street and the Friends of Fessenden Park for an
afternoon of French-inspired fun. Savor crepes and profiteroles from Le Chat Noir and Matisse, Sip Perrier, or Orangina and enjoy a glass of wine at Le Chat Noir with your entry ticket. Learn to play the French lawn game Petanque, plant a sunflower to take home with you, participate in family-friendly French arts &craft projects, enjoy music as you relax at a cafe table. Tickets are just $20; one child ticket (aged 10 and under) included free with a paid adult. Additional child tickets, $5/child. Tickets include all food, beverages, and activities.

9:00am-10:30am: Poo at the Zoo Preschool Class at the National Zoo
Who poos at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo? ALL the animals do, that’s who! Zoo scientists can learn a lot from poo; come to this class and so will you. Friends of the National Zoo preschool classes are designed for children ages 4-6 to discover a whole new view of the National Zoo. “Adult-and-me” format classes use interactive learning stations, hands-on activities and crafts, Nature Play, and exciting Zoo Walks to engage your child’s sense of wonder and curiosity about wildlife and the natural world. Pre-registration is required. Please note that classes do not include any behind-the-scenes access or animal contact. $28/child for FONZ members. $35/child for non-members. Registration fee covers one child with adult. 

10:00am-5:00pm: The Lotus and Water Lilly Festival at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
The TWO-DAY festival features performances from cultures around the world, family fun games, arts and crafts and the amazingly beautiful lotuses and water lilies in full bloom! Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a one-of-a-kind experience within Anacostia Park.

11:30am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm: Investigate American Art: Winslow Homer
How do you investigate a work of art? This program helps children make careful observations, analyze artists’ choices, ask questions, and use their imagination while exploring works of art. Led by museum educators, each program includes reading a children’s book, exploring one work of art in the galleries, and completing a simple, hands-on art activity. Each program is approximately 60 minutes.

6:00pm: Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor: Coco
Nothing says summer like an evening under the stars—and there’s no better way to enjoy the season than Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor. Pack your picnic blankets, grab food to go from one of the delicious dining establishments, and meet at the Plaza’s big screen for a FREE evening of fun for all ages! Please note that movies will begin at 6:00pm and will be shown once. They also feature Date Night Movies on Thursdays at 7:00pm.

6:30pm: Tunes on Tenth
Join 10th Street Community Park (between L and M Streets) for Tunes on Tenth! Featuring jazz fusion with The UpBeets – Jazz with a New BEET! Bring a lawn blanket or camping chair to the park. The friends of the 10th Street Park will be providing light goodies or feel free to bring your own!

9:00am-12:00pm: Home Depot Kids Workshop
Save the day with a tow truck in this hands-on workshop. Together you and your child can build a custom toy tow truck with an operational boom to rescue model vehicles from ditches and embankments, move disabled vehicles or simply put the model on display. Once your wrecker construction is complete, your child can customize it with paint and stickers. All Kids Workshop attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.

10:00am-5:00pm: Where’s Waldo? Glass Truck Tour
Join a fun family-friendly mobile truck tour coming to DC on Saturday, July 6th from 10am – 5pm!  The truck will be traveling to key cities to promote “Where’s Waldo?”, a new show on Universal Kids that will be premiering this summer.

8:30pm: NSO presents Harry Potter at Wolf Trap
The Harry Potter™ film series is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural phenomenon that delights millions of fans around the world. This concert will feature the National Symphony Orchestra performing every note from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire™. Audiences will be able to relive the magic of the film in high-definition on a giant HD screen while hearing the orchestra perform Patrick Doyle’s unforgettable score live to picture.

11:00am-5:00pm: National Building Museum Summer Block Party
The Museum is partnering with the LAB at Rockwell Group to present the 2019 Summer Block Party installation. Lawn will be an immersive installation taking up the entirety of the Museum’s Great Hall, and offer interactive experiences for all ages. Lawn allows guests to unwind with quintessential summer activities while connecting to the design of the Museum. It features a vast, sloping green space built on a scaffolding superstructure. The green expanse is set on a graceful incline and dotted with clusters of communal lounging areas. Visitors can enjoy refreshments and lawn games like croquet, bocce ball, and dominoes. At the top of the lawn is a scaffolding tower that reaches the height of the Museum’s third floor, offering never-before-seen views of the Great Hall, column capitals, and sculptural busts lining the roof.

11:00am: Women’s World Cup Watch Party at the Wharf
Cheer on team USA on the waterfront at The Wharf!  Enjoy the Women’s World Cup Final on a 16-foot jumbo-tron screen on Wharf Street, broadcasting to the Pearl Street party zone.  Enjoy food and drink on the patios of Kirwan’s on the Wharf, Kaliwa, Pearl Street Warehouse, and Lupo Marino. The event is free to attend, all ages welcome. 

11:00am: Women’s World Cup Watch Party at National Harbor
Kick It at National Harbor during World Cup France 2019! Join the live broadcast of USA vs Netherlands. Get there early for stadium seating in the new District Stadium, a converted cargo crate complete with lighting, ceiling fans, shaded seating, and beverage service; plus food and beverage specials. Or bring a chair, blanket, and umbrella and sit on the turf.

The Edlavitch DCJCC Parenting Center is proud to bring you *Parenting Without Power Struggles *on Thursday, July 18 at 7:30pm, hosted by Mary’s Center in Ontario Road in Adams Morgan. This workshop that will provide strategies for how to encourage your child’s growing need to assert independence while still maintaining your control and authority. Struggles around mealtime, potty training, cooperation, and others will be addressed. Led by Claire Lerner, a licensed clinical social worker and child development specialist.

5:00pm-8:30pm: Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
The Jazz in the Garden Series begins its 19th season in May. The free concert series features jazz artists performing a wide variety of styles—Brazilian Folk Jazz, Alternative Modern, Blues, Reggae, World Steam Punk, Afro Funk, African Fusion Jazz, Cuban Charanga, Django Guitar, New Orleans Jazz, and more—every Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:30 in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. You can purchase food and adult beverages or bring your own picnic (but no adult bevs are allowed in, purchase them there).

6:00pm-9:45pm: Independence Fireworks at Mount Vernon.
Start your Independence Day celebration with a bang at George Washington’s Mount Vernon! Enjoy an evening of family fun and fireworks choreographed to patriotic music and celebrate our nation’s founding! Enjoy a patriotic evening filled with dazzling fireworks, Mansion tours, musical performances, and games on George Washington’s beloved estate! Greet General and Mrs. Washington in the historic area before trying your hand at bocce ball. Dust off your dancing shoes for 18th-century dancing demonstrations. Mount Vernon’s colonial artisans will reveal how 18th-century ice cream was made in the days before freezers. Independence Fireworks takes place rain or shine. A separate ticket is required for this special evening event, and does not include daytime admission.

7:00pm-9:00pm: Friday Night Concert Series: Justin Trawick + Navy Band Country Current
The free Capitol Riverfront Friday Night Concert Series is back for its 9th Season. Every Friday night this summer, head to Yards Park to relax and enjoy the river view, fantastic bands, food and beverage, and a large variety of great restaurants within a few minutes walk from the park. Family-friendly lyrics and grassy open space make this an enjoyable event for adults and kids alike.

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, established in 1967, honors contemporary living cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. The 2019 Festival will look a little different, with two days of concerts instead of the usual two weeks of craft demonstrations, narrative sessions, cooking demonstrations, and more. Visitors will still be able to enjoy live music, a variety of food and drink options from local food trucks, instrument workshops for all ages, and presentations about the D.C. music scene.

Saturday

8:30am-12:30pm: Kids Obstacle Challenge
Kids Obstacle Challenge is the #1 obstacle course race series for kids ages 5-16 in the country and the best kids event to hit the Washington, D.C. area. They believe in building brave kids, and brave kids are forged in fire. Kids need to be challenged so that they can discover the power that lies within them. When kids push themselves towards a goal, it shows them what they are capable of, instilling confidence and perseverance. ​The most anticipated family-friendly event of the year will be charging into the D.C. area on June 29, 2019 at Bull Run Special Events Center in Sully, VA.  This unique venue, located near routes 66 and 29, features grassy areas and wide open space. Your family will enjoy a one-of-a-kind adventure in the great outdoors.​

This program is designed for children aged six to twelve and adults to enjoy together, and is offered in conjunction with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
