Weekend Picks and Labor Day 2017 in and around Washington, DC

We survived the first two weeks of being back in school and are sad to say good-bye to pool days. In addition to the Weekend Picks, we included a short list of quick day or overnight trips for your holiday weekend as well as some Labor Day activities in our area.

Shenandoah National Park

Explore the art of recycling at the museum’s 38th-annual Celebration of Textiles Festival at the Textile Museum Saturday and Sunday. Try your hand at weaving with recycled materials and designing a paper dress; watch local fiber artists at work; enjoy live music and dance; and explore the ingenious designs in the exhibition Scraps: Fashion, Textiles, and Creative Reuse. Free; no reservations required. In addition to performances, visitors will be able to make upcycled jewelry with Scrap Baltimore, weave with recycled materials, design a paper dress and join a knitting circle with Project Knitwell.

Maryland Renaissance Festival will be jousting and serving up lots of turkey legs this weekend! The festival is free to children 7 and under. Take a time machine back to medieval times. With plenty of entertainment, including music, jousting, mazes, puppetry, pony rides, a huge pirate playground and so much more. Your children will see people dressed up in 16th century outfits. Dress like a knight and come participate or just watch! The Festival ends October 22 and is open weekends only.

8:30am-7:30pm: 17th Library of Congress National Book Festival at the Washington Convention Center

Starting at 9:30 a.m., more than 100 authors, illustrators and poets will make presentations on stages dedicated to kids, fiction, history, poetry, contemporary life and more. Many fascinating thematic programs and panel discussions will be offered throughout the festival. A Main Stage of 2,000 seats will feature seven of the most popular festival authors. The exposition floor on the lower level of the Convention Center will also offer a wide array of fun and exciting activities and programs for festival attendees of all ages. From the literacy corner reading space to special story times and a fun hunt for Waldo, festival sponsors will offer family-friendly activities throughout the day.

DC VegFest is a fun, free, and flavorful way to discover the many benefits of choosing plant-based foods for our health, the planet, and animals. The free event offers: Complimentary samples of vegan cuisine, Live Music, Busboys & Poets Beer Garden, Humane Rescue Alliance Barking Lot, Kids’ Zone (including yoga, kids’ hands-on cooking demonstrations, a moon bounce and more) and Inspirational Speakers & Cooking Demonstrations. Rain or shine– lots of areas are tented.

The National Symphony Orchestra performs a free Labor Day Concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol each year, the Sunday before Labor Day. The annual concert is produced by the Kennedy Center. Open rehearsal is at 3:30pm and the concert is at 8pm. The concert will be moved indoors to the Kennedy Center Concert Hall if inclement weather.

Weekend Picks: August 4-6, 2017

August 4, 2017

Howard County Fair begins today and runs through August 12 and is open from 8:00am-11:00pm. Admission is $5 for ages 10 and up, $2 for seniors and is FREE for kids under 10. Rides and games are extra. See the schedule for fun events throughout the week. Your family will have the opportunity to enjoy rides, watch a Demolition Derby or Rodeo, taste fair food and win prizes. Don’t miss the magic show and talent show, pony rides or the kids and critters barn. The fair address is 2210 Fairground Road, West Friendship, MD.

Smithsonian American Art Museum Arcade is an annual event hosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and its partners. The event, which is free and open to the public, is August 5 and 6, 2017 at the museum’s main building in Washington, D.C. from 11:30am-7:00pm. This year, the museum will be filled to the brim with video games. One hundred fifty independent developers have submitted their games to be shown at SAAM Arcade while additional arcade cabinets and consoles will be provided by MagFest, Death by Audio Arcade, Arcades4Home, and CrabTowne USA. Game building workshops will be presented in the MacMillan Education Center by Boolean Girl and the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, while the Triforce Quartet and Bit Brigade perform in McEvoy Auditorium. In addition, Events DC presents the Boys and Girls Club Youth eSports League Championship on the 3rd floor.

BrickFair LEGO is Saturday and Sunday at the Dulles Expo Center from 10:00am-5:00pm. Lego enthusiasts this is for you!

Peach Daze Fuzztival is Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am-6:00pm. Celebrate Peak Peach Picking season! Enjoy the fruit in great food and drink at this full collaboration between Bluemont Vineyard, Dirt Farm Brewing and Great Country Farms, all located in Bluemont, VA.

69th Annual Fairfax County 4-H Fair and Carnival at Frying Pan Farm Park is also going on through August 6. Carnival rides, wagon and carousel rides, food trucks, live entertainment and more.

The free Capitol Riverfront Friday Night Concert Series is back for its 7th Season, this year back on the Yards Park boardwalk! The dog days of summer are upon us, and what better way to escape than a demonstration of homemade ice cream. Come learn about making this hand cranked frozen treat brought over from France by Dolly Madison, watch the ingredients being poured into the dasher, and learn about the brine that froze the cream. A historic recipe by Thomas Jefferson with modern adaptation will be available to take away. This event is free.

The 2017 Smithsonian Folklife Festival is on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between Seventh and Twelfth streets and in the Arts and Industries Building. The free festival is taking place June 29-July 4 & July 6-9. Festival hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with evening dance parties at 5:30 and circus performances most nights at 7 p.m.

8:30am-9:30am: Capoeira for Kids Ages 3.5-7 at Bloombars

Capoeira provides physical fitness for children, ages 4 and up. It is intended to be a no- to low-contact martial art that helps children with gross motor planning and gross motor skills. Children will also learn maculele (a dance done hitting sticks against your partner’s sticks), samba, capoeira instruments, and Portuguese through this fun, interactive class. Classes are $15 each or $120 for a series of ten classes.

Explore how the human body works through hands-on science this July at Koshland. Each session investigates a different aspect of the body – everything from DNA to why our skin burns after too much sun exposure. Visitors can compare DNA and amino acids, experiment with biomedical engineering, discover the different lobes of the human brain, and much more! This program is free; registration is recommended but not required. Appropriate for ages 10+.

Kids will learn about some of the new animals at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo! Bring your young animal lover to the Zoo this weekend for “Who’s New at the National Zoo,” a preschool class for 2-3 and 3-5 year olds! Join us as we learn about some of the new faces, flippers, wings, and hooves at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo! Friends of the National Zoo preschool classes use hands-on activities, crafts, stories, songs, and the Zoo’s animal collection to help your child learn about environmental conservation and life science while building important cognitive and social skills. Nationals Winterfest is at the Washington Convention Center Saturday & Sunday from 11:30am-4:00pm. Join for Nats Winterfest, returning December 10 and 11 to the Washington Convention Center. Winterfest will again feature two days of fun! Activities include: Clinics with Nationals players and coaches, watch a Homerun Derby featuring the Nationals mascots, make a snow fort, participate in the steal home challenge and take batting practice, hear a winter or baseball themed story, read by a Nationals player, participate in the Kids Press Conferences, sign up for 2017 season Jr. Nats Kids Club memberships at the Jr. Nationals Kids Club Kiosk, ride down The Slider, a giant slide reminiscent of a sledding hill and a “Video Pitch”, where fans can give virtual batters their best pitch.

Friday & Saturday NSO Pops: A Holiday Pops! featuring Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana will play at The Kennedy Center. Warm your spirit with fresh takes on comforting classics and singalong carols in this NSO Pops tradition–this year featuring The Washington Chorus alongside Broadway stars Laura Osnes (Grease) and Santino Fontana (Disney’s Frozen). Capoeira provides physical fitness for children, ages 4 and up. It is intended to be a no- to low-contact martial art that helps children with gross motor planning and gross motor skills. Children will also learn maculele (a dance done hitting sticks against your partner’s sticks), samba, capoeira instruments, and Portuguese through this fun, interactive class.
Classes are $15 each or $120 for a series of ten classes.

Remember the song about the wayward meatball, On Top of Spaghetti from you summer camp days? Singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb, who opens Wolf Trap’s summertime Theatre- in-the-Woods series June 21, remembers well this example of storytelling in music. Finding herself in a position to write a souped-up version of sorts, she wrote about a pancake. Along with co-collaborators on the nostalgic summer camp songs album, Camp Lisa, she shares a similar message of perseverance through the point of view of a pancake that never quite makes it from the griddle to the plate like everyone expects, but makes a fine breakfast anyway.

Memorial Day Weekend 2016 in Washington, DC

With the holiday weekend among us, we’ve chosen a few well-known picks that pay tribute to Memorial Day in addition to some familiar events. We’ve also put together a short list of suggested Day Trips that won’t keep you and your family in the car too long but will get you “away”. An obvious and free pick is to visit the various memorials along the Mall.

Washington Nationals play this weekend against my home team the St. Louis Cardinals. Bring your pup to the park on Friday or catch a giveaway game on Saturday day game or a Sunday day game!
