Weekend Picks

December 4, 2015

Experience the Mall Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, to celebrate the season with Smithsonian. We’ve got special events galore to help you get in the holiday spirit, including musical performances, book signings, trunk shows, activities for kids, and more!  Participating museums include: National Museum of American History, National Museum of Air and Space, National Museum of Natural History, Freer Gallery of Art and Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, National Museum of African American Art, National Postal Museum, and The Smithsonian Castle. Hours are 10:30am-5:30pm and the Holiday Festival is free.

This weekend Baltimore will be having Dollar or Less Days. Many of your favorite spots will only be $1 for admission. Get there early as lines will be long but they’ll move fast. Check the above link for participating places. See our post on Baltimore for ideas of other places to go.

Ice! Featuring Santa Claus is Coming to Town is still going on at The Gaylord National Harbor. Guests can walk-through holiday attraction, kept at a chilly 9 degrees, marvel at two million pounds of hand-carved ice sculpture, have fun on five ice slides, walk and see the 7 individual rooms depicting the story of Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town and see The Frostbite Factory – a live carving zone.

Home Sweet Home Gingerbread  Workshop at National Building Museum is Saturday and Sunday. Get in the holiday spirit and construct a gingerbread house at the National Building Museum. Participants will learn how to use gingerbread walls and royal icing to build a house. We’ll provide the supplies and treats to make your gingerbread home as sweet as can be. Register online!

Climb on, hop in, and interact with a variety of trucks for free! Food, beverages, face painting, bouncy house and a bake sale.

10:00am-11:00pm: Capital Wheel turns 1!

We’ll be throwing a Capital Wheel Birthday Party, complete with live music on the pier and amazing giveaways! Plus, the first 500 riders on May 30th will receive Buzz Bakery cupcakes!

Learn about the world’s 4th largest island. Market space, vendors, live music, folkloric dances, arts and crafts, Malagasy food and more. All tickets include a plate of food.

Weekday Adventures: National Postal Museum Story time and Explore The Kreeger Museum

The weather made a drastic turn this weekend but this pregnant Mama continued to satisfy her YogiBerry craving. We did however unpack our fleeces and vests from the attic so we could enjoy the weekend a little warmer. Have you been to any of the Orchards or Fall Festivals on our list? The weather has us in the Fall mood and ready to choose the perfect pumpkins.

DC Library Kid Events schedule can be found here. There’s an exciting Morning Glory Series at Rosedale, Wordless Book Story Time at West End and Hispanic Heritage events at various libraries.

Monday-

9:30am-11:00am- Rise and Rhyme at Busboys and Poets

Rise + Rhyme is a weekly Busboys and Poets series for local stay-at-home parents and early rising families of all kinds! Featuring performances and stories for children ages 5 and under. This week The Singing Lizard will be there to rock out.

Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.

The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum invites adults and young children (ages 2-3) to discover the world around them together at monthly Story Time. Children will build important developmental and social skills through books, activities, songs, and self-guided gallery exploration. Explore themes, such as shapes, colors, and sizes, in a relaxed setting at your neighborhood museum. Feel free to bring snacks and enjoy the space after the program!

Thursday-Sunday you can check out the 19th annual Fort Belvoir Oktoberfest. Check out the Kinder Korner schedule so you don’t miss anything. Musical performances, carnival rides and so much more.

A trip to the farm or orchard is a perfect way to break up the week. Check out some local fall festivals to head to. After all,  you need to start to decorate your home with pumpkins and begin baking with all of those apples.

Join the catchy and entertaining Mr. Gabe for “Community Circle Time” for 2 free shows. Become a member of the library while you’re there, if not one already or just stay and read with your little one.

10:00am: Tudor Tots: Fall Frolic

Tudor Place has enchanted young children for 200 years. Experience it yourself Tuesday mornings, as you meet to read, sing, and play in the gardens and historic spaces. This family-friendly program offers a new theme each week, from “adventurous animals” to “growing gardens” and more. Children will participate in interactive read-alouds, songs, and themed movements related to the week’s topic, sharing a tranquil setting with the grown-ups who care for them. Sign up for one class or all of the classes that run through November 25. Parents/caregivers remain with children.
