Weekend Picks: Festival Cubed, Sample Fall Classes and Rock Out

Hope everyone enjoyed a short week and the kids are off to a good start of school. Beltway Bambinos is wrapping up another amazing beach week and will sadly return to reality tomorrow.

DC splash and pools are open through this weekend! And we thought water fun was gone come Labor Day. 

Saturday-

7:00am-4:30pm: ChalkFest at Reston Town Center I02-121105-Sarasota_Chalk_Festival-5
(Reston Town Center: Market Street, between Library Street and Presidents Street)
ChalkFest At Reston Town Center is presented by the Initiative for Public Art – Reston (IPAR) and Reston Town Center. All are invited to create chalk drawings on Market Street. The event is open to professional artists, amateurs, businesses, families, and kids of all ages. There will be prizes for professional artists, amateurs, families and kids, in addition to the “Audience Choice Award”.

9:00am-1:00pm: Sample Classes at Imagination Stage
(4908 Auburn Ave, Bethesda, MD. 20814)
Try a sample class on us! Get an up-close and personal taste of what classes are like at Imagination Stage! (We promise you’ll have a blast!) Sample classes are about 20 minutes in length. Parents are encouraged to join the samplers for children in grades 3 or younger. Parents of children in grades 4 or older are welcome to observe the sampler, but not required.  Please note that this is NOT a drop-off event. Children MUST be accompanied by a caregiver.

Grab an instrument, get on stage or practice your moves on the dance floor. This is a perfect spot for your little one to move and groove. Suggested donation $7.

10:45am: Once Upon a Fairy Time at PB & Jack
Once Upon a Fairy Time is back with her special fairies and pirates show! Includes stories, wiggling, bubbles and more! Included in your admission! The idea behind PB & Jack is to create a place where both kids and parents can have fun, hang out, and attend activities and classes. PB & Jack opens at 9:00am.

Access the free market parking lot from 6th Street NE or travel via metro to NoMA-Gallaudet. Come early for coffee and stay for lunch!

10:30am and 11:15am: Born to Read Storytime at Bethesda Library 
(7400 Arlington Road Bethesda, MD 20814)
Stories, rhymes, songs, chants, sign language and other early literacy activities for babies 0 to 23 months with an adult. Free tickets will be handed out 30 minutes prior to the program. Space is limited so register here.

Weekend Picks: Blues, Jazz and Labor Day

Maryland Renaissance Festival kicked off  last weekend! The festival is free to children 11 and under this weekend. Take a time machine back to medieval times. With plenty of entertainment, including music, joisting, puppetry, pony rides and so much more. Your children will see people dressed up in 16th century outfits. Dress like a knight and come any weekend through October 17.  

Curtain call on some great theater performances this weekend. Check out the list and see a show.

Friday-

5:00pm-8:30pm: Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
(7th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW)
This is the final concert of the summer. The free concert series has featured jazz artists performing a wide variety of styles—salsa, blues fusion, xylophone, Afrofunk, and more. Bring a picnic dinner.

Saturday- 

10:00am-10:00pm: Library of Congress National Book Festival  poster_enlarge
(Washington Convention Center, 801 Mt. Vernon Pl., NW, Washington, D.C)
This year’s festival will feature authors, poets and illustrators in several pavilions well into the evening. Festival-goers can meet and hear firsthand from their favorite poets and authors, get books signed, enjoy special entertainment, and stay up late for special new graphic novel, poetry and film programs.

12:00pm-7:30pm: 26th Annual Blues Fest at Carter Barron Amphitheater
(16th Street & Colorado Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20008)
Throughout the day, visit the John Cephas Workshop Stage for workshops led by talented and well-known artists who will entertain children and adults. Check out The John Cephas Workshop Stage  from 12:00 – 4:00 pm for the Children’s Instrument Play Area. Admission is free.

2:00pm-8:00pm: 8th Annual Jazz and Blues Festival at Lake Anne
(1609 Washington Plaza, Reston , VA)
This free, family friendly, all-day event will showcase a variety of talented regional and national jazz & blues performers.

2:00pm: The Fresh Beat Band at Wolf Trap
(1645 Trap Rd., Vienna, VA)
It’s a “Great Day” to sing and dance “Just Like a Rockstar” with Kiki, Marina, Twist, and Shout from Nick Jr.’s sensational TV band! All patrons, including children of any age, must have a ticket to performances. Tickets range from $25-125.

Sunday-

3:00pm-11:00pm: Capitol Concert 
(1st St SE., Washington, DC 20515)
Gates open at 3:00pm, open rehearsal at 3:30pm and concert begins at 8:00pm. This year’s program explores American music from TV, movies, and beloved Broadway musicals, with a veritable “who’s who” of notable composers represented. Concert is 90 minutes in length.

Weekend Picks: Bao Bao’s Birthday, Arts in the Park and Thomas and Friends

Weekday Adventures: Storytime on the Lake, UkeFest and a Drive-in

August 10, 2014

Need some more carnival rides and fried twinkles in your life? How about a tractor pull? Head over to the Montgomery County Fair. It is happening through Saturday, August 16. Fair hours are 10am-12midnight and carnival hours are 12:00pm-12:00am and animal exhibits in Old MacDonald’s Barn are open each day beginning at 3 pm. Children 11 and under are FREE while adults cost $10. Check the schedule for daily events. Address is 16 Chestnut Street, Gaithersburg, MD 20877.

Prince William County Fair is also happening through Saturday, August 16. Adults $10, Children over 5 $5.

Weekend Picks: Free jazz concert, a day at the farm and an evening with the clowns

Have a great weekend! There are some exciting events this weekend that we hope to make it to, starting with The Backyard Bash. Our son loves wide open spaces to run in and enjoys picking fruit and petting animals so we will hang out at Ticonderoga at some point. There are a few evening events for those with older children that sound like a blast! The weather should be gorgeous so if you’re looking to head to an outdoor water park or splash park here’s your guide!

Lights are on, doors are open as Bob Brown tells the story of Old MacDonald through puppets during the Tiny Tots performance. Recommended for ages 0-4, $5. My 3 year old saw Bob Brown at camp this week and hasn’t stopped talking about it!

10:00am: Mr. Gabe and the Circle Time All-Stars at Lake Fairfax Park Amphitheater

Mr. Gabe and his band, the Circle Time All-Stars, perform a mix of traditional children’s songs, family-friendly pop songs, and originals from Mr. Gabe’s award-winning CD, Play Date. Free event part of the Fairfax County “Arts in the Parks” series.

Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.

9:30am-11:00am: Rise and Rhyme at Busboys and Poets

Rise + Rhyme is a weekly Busboys and Poets series for local stay-at-home parents and early rising families of all kinds! Featuring performances and stories for children ages 5 and under. Today’s featured artist is master educator, musician, and storyteller,   Bashea Iya Imana .  “Iya & the Kuumba Kids” is  an interactive, hands-on, fun-filled time. Iya masterfully blends music & movement with storytelling, eco-friendly arts & crafts, and puppetry. This educational program for children fosters a love for learning and promotes literacy, critical thinking, respect for the environment, character development, and creativity.

Weekend Picks: Firehouse Festival, County Fairs and a Postal Family Day

Weather calls for some showers this weekend, so check out our indoor guide for fun around DC. Our theatre guide has some wonderful shows to see as well. 

Also going on for the next week (August 2-9) Howard County Fair. You’ll get your fill of amusement rides, animals, games, food, animal rides and much more! Bonus: Children under 10 are free!

Saturday- 

9:00am-2:00pm: The Annual Friendship Firehouse Festival
(107 South Alfred St., Alexandria, VA)
The popular family event features antique fire apparatus, craft booths, displays by Alexandria merchants, and live music. Food and beverages are available. Children will receive free fire helmets and are treated to a supervised visit inside the City’s fire trucks. In addition to the day’s outdoor events, festival participants will enjoy visiting the Friendship Firehouse Museum, originally built as a firehouse in 1855.
