A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theatre: November 21 — December 31

The 36th Annual Nutcracker at The Puppet Co: November 29 – December 31
Join the Puppet Co. for our annual The Nutcracker! This time honored seasonal celebration includes Tchaikovsky’s familiar story of Clara and her prince, with some Puppet Co. nursery rhyme spin. Recommended ages 4+.

The Polar Express Train Ride at B&O Railroad Museum: November 29-30 & December 1, 6-8, 12-15 & 18-22
Climb aboard The Polar Express to create a Christmas memory that you and your family will cherish forever! Come in your pajamas as a family to watch the live performance of The Polar Express. Once on the train, the classic Christmas tale will be performed and little ones will have the opportunity to meet Santa and receive their first gift of Christmas! Santa’s helpers will greet you upon arrival to the North Pole, where you can take pictures with Santa and have lots of holiday fun.

A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas at Olney Theatre Center: November 29 – December 29
It wouldn’t be Christmas without Paul Morella’s stunning solo rendition of Charles Dickens’s classic tale that represents everything great about the holiday. This is A Christmas Carol in its purest form, with 99% of the text drawn directly from the original novella. Even more impressive, Morella’s theatrical portrayal of over 50 characters honors how Dickens himself would tour the world reciting the story. Now in its fourteenth holiday season, the show is a family tradition throughout the region and a gem constantly being discovered by new audiences.

ELF in Concert at the Kennedy Center: November 29 – December 1
Buddy was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. This holiday season relive this heartwarming holiday classic on a giant screen as every note of John Debney’s wonderful score is played live to picture in: Elf™ in Concert!

Philadelphia Ballet: George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker: November 27 – December 1

Washington Ballet’s Nutcracker at Warner Theatre: November 30 – December 29

This celebrated production is set in historic 1882 Georgetown with George Washington, King George III, and other historical figures. Merry TUBACHRISTMAS at The Kennedy Center: December 2
2024 is the 51st year of Merry TUBACHRISTMAS! events which are presented throughout the world. Since the first TUBACHRISTMAS, musicians of all ages have gathered annually to perform traditional Christmas music arranged by American composer Alec Wilder on the tuba and euphonium. Online advance reservations for a given performance date will open on a rolling basis, opening every Wednesday two weeks out from the date.

An Irish Carol at Keegan Theatre: December 4 – 31
An original work by Keegan favorite Matthew J. Keenan, AN IRISH CAROL is an homage to Dickens’ classic – told as only the Irish can. This comic and touching play, set in a modern Dublin pub, follows one evening in the life of David, a wealthy pub owner who has lost touch with his own humanity in the interest of self-protection and material success. But on this Christmas Eve – challenged by a voice from the past, provoked by those in the present, and faced with the reality of a lonely future – David’s life may change forever.

NSO at the Anthem: Ugly Sweater Holiday Concert: December 4
’Tis the season to break out your most festively heinous knitwear—the ugly Christmas sweater! Don your favorite holiday threads (ugly or not) for an unforgettable evening of classic Christmas hits and orchestral beauty. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke, the NSO will deck The Anthem’s halls with everything from “Sleigh Ride” and “Carol of the Bells” to a Jingle, Jangle Sing-Along, music from Frozen, and more! This performance takes place at The Anthem.

Dave Koz & Friends Christmas Tour at Stathmore: December 5
Dave Koz and Friends announce the 26th anniversary edition of the longest-running jazz-based Christmas tour. Black Leaves Dance Company: A Chocolate City Nutcracker at Atlas Performing Arts Center: December 7-8
“A Chocolate City Nutcracker” is Black Leaves Dance Company’s retelling of The Nutcracker story as we follow a young, gay man at his HBCU’s holiday party, who is searching for his Prince, and travels to the Land of Dreams, where we explore a variety of African diasporic dance genres. This work is a love letter to pan-Africanism, the queer community, and family.

NPR’s A Jazz Piano Christmas at The Kennedy Center: December 7
Your favorite holiday classics as you’ve never heard them! The Kennedy Center and NPR present A Jazz Piano Christmas, the annual sell-out event featuring jazz-infused renditions of the season’s most-loved tunes performed by Grammy Award^®–winning pianist Kris Davis, 2023 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition winner Jahari Stampley, and Cuban sensation Roberto Fonseca.

Atlas Presents Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra: A Bohemian Christmas: December 9
Celebrate the holidays with performances of cool classics by Shorty Rogers, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn, Stan Kenton, and a handful of arrangements by BCJO Ghosts of Christmas Past. The Washington Chorus: A Candlelight Christmas: December 14
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Featuring spirited brass, a festive chorus, and extra special guests, this family-friendly concert is among the DC region’s most beloved holiday traditions. Navidad Flamenca (Flamenco Holidays): December 14
Create a new tradition celebrating the holidays the Spanish way. This festive program will take you on a journey of some of the most festive holiday traditions as celebrated in Spain and Puerto Rico. Enjoy an evening of Spanish holiday music and song (villancicos) alongside flamenco dancing, and even a “parranda.” The cast will include Furia Flamenca Dance Company and a rich cast of musicians including, Maestro Torcuato Zamora, Juan L. Romero and Guillermo Juan Christie on flamenco guitar, and Margarita Osorio and Jorge Porta on vocals.

Handel’s Messiah at the Kennedy Center: December 19 – 22
Hallelujah—Washington, D.C.’s favorite holiday tradition returns! Since its debut nearly three centuries ago, Handel’s Messiah reigns unchallenged as the ultimate celebration of holiday joy. This year, experience the larger-than-life oratorio in all its splendor as Masaaki Suzuki conducts the NSO, a stellar cast of soloists, and the University of Maryland Concert Choir in this always-daring, beloved classic.

The Dance Institute of Washington: The Spirit of Kwanzaa: December 20 – 22
We invite you to the Dance Institute of Washington’s (DIW) most popular and longest-running cultural arts production (since 1995), The Spirit of Kwanzaa! The Spirit of Kwanzaa is a cultural arts celebration that focuses on the agricultural ceremonies of Africa. DIW has adapted the seven principles of Kwanzaa to convey the struggles and creativity of the Black diaspora. The production highlights the holiday’s principles with dance, song, live drumming, and spoken word. Immerse yourself in this life-changing experience, by exploring this year’s theme, FOR THE CULTURE. This isn’t just a catchphrase—it’s a call to reclaim our heritage as a unifying force.

The Hip-Hop Nutcracker at The National Theatre: December 20 – 22
A holiday mash-up for the whole family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker comes to The National for the very first time. Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Jennifer Weber, this contemporary dance spectacle is a re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, smashing hip hop dance and Tchaikovsky’s timeless music together into a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event. The Hip Hop Nutcracker is brought to life by a powerhouse cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set.

Maryland Youth Ballet’s Mini-Nut: December 20-23 & 26
The Mini-Nut is MYB’s abbreviated version of The Nutcracker geared towards younger audiences. This one-hour version is a great introduction to ballet for our youngest theatregoers. The performance is approximately one hour long with no intermission. A perfect holiday mini-treat!

The Nutcracker at Montgomery College: December 20 – 26
Magical dolls, life-sized mice, dancing snowflakes, and an enchanting kingdom of sweets return to stage this holiday season for Maryland Youth Ballet’s full-length production of The Nutcracker. Set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, the incredible dancing and dazzling costumes bring to life the classic story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince.

NatPhil: Handel’s Messiah: December 21 & 22
‘Tis the season for Handel’s Messiah! Celebrate the season with this ultimate holiday classic, guided by guest conductor Anthony Blake Clark. NatPhil and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society reunite along with four celebrated soloists – Soprano Aundi Marie Moore, Mezzo Soprano Lucia, Tenor Norman Shankle, and Baritone Jorell Williams. Embark on a musical journey through this timeless holiday classic.

Messiah Sing-Along at The Kennedy Center: December 23
Be part of Washington’s most popular free holiday event, the Kennedy Center’s Messiah Sing-Along. Back by popular demand, the evening concert features conductor Nancia D’Alimonte as she leads members of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, guest soloists, a chorus of 150, and a very enthusiastic audience in Handel’s masterpiece. A family and community tradition since 1971!

Christmas Day Organ Recital at National Cathedral: December 25
Join us for a Christmas Day tradition featuring festive music performed by Cathedral Organist Thomas Sheehan, and Organ Scholar Ariana Corbin. Tickets not required. Livestream available.

9:30am AND 11:00am: Rocknoceros at National Theatre
Get ready to twist, shake, rattle, and roll as Rocknoceros gets the family on their feet dancing to upbeat tunes. Coach Cotton, Williebob, and Boogie Woogie Bennie have been making award-winning music for the whole family since 2005. Not only are they one of DC’s most well-loved bands, but they have also gained recognition in Austin and Chicago. FREE

10:00am: Toddler Trailblazers: Up, Up and Away
Our workshops offer a variety of hands-on experiences that introduce young children to concepts in engaging ways. Each class includes playful activities that are intentionally chosen to support your child’s development. Our learning extends beyond the classroom and into the museum and community where children and parents are encouraged to wonder and explore together as a family. Come take a pretend hot air balloon ride with us! The class will imagine floating up, up, and away before visiting the National Air and Space Museum to further explore hot air balloons.

10:00am-12:00pm: Kids Club at Michaels: Pony Bead Snowflakes
They make, you shop! Kids 3 and up and can enjoy making snowflakes with chenille stems and pony beads. All supplies provided. Parent or guardian must remain on the premises. $2 fee

10:00am: Twos Travelers: Yellow Submarine
Our workshops offer a variety of hands-on experiences that introduce young children to concepts in engaging ways. Each class includes playful activities that are intentionally chosen to support your child’s development. Our learning extends beyond the classroom and into the museum and community where children and parents are encouraged to wonder and explore together as a family. Dive deep into the Ocean Hall at the National Museum of Natural History and learn about the type of transportation we would need to travel below the surface of the water. Along the way we will explore the different ocean zones and the creatures that inhabit them.

10:30am-2:30pm: A Library + Art Pop-Up At Hirshhorn
Check it out! Find our cart in the galleries and check out a fun kit full of our favorite finds for kids. Each kit is an art meets reading adventure, with a special theme, children’s book, suggested artworks for viewing, and hands-on art making materials.

10:30am-11:15am: Saturday Song Circle at Imagination Stage
You and your child are invited to a fun, interactive musical experience! An Early Childhood Teaching Artist explores a popular children’s book with your family through song and musical instruments, and you will receive a list of all the songs to practice at home. Baby Beluga is the featured story.

10:30am: Mr. Jon & Friends at Jammin Java
Mr. Jon & Friends is Parents’ Choice Award winning music for kids and their families. This energetic family music is all about fun, movement, and laughter!

11:00am-2:00pm: Family Afternoon: Pop Up Tents at National Building Museum
Construct an awe-inspiring fort from newspapers. Find out how a triangle’s strong shape can brace your structure and keep your fort standing longer. Create tetrahedral caverns small enough for one or big enough for your entire clan. Little ones can explore how to build forts all year round, even in the cold winter months, during a story time with local Megan Wagner Lloyd. Enjoy a reading of her children’s book, Fort Building Time, and then pick up your very own copy in the Museum Shop.

11:00am-1:00pm: Children’s Workshop: Will It Be a Bonsai or a Big Tree? at National Arboretum
Every tree seedling has its fate, and in this workshop, you can learn how that fate is determined. One adult and one child will have a special day together as they work as lab partners, using their “scientist eyes” to observe details and make comparisons. We’ll learn about plant physiology, ecosystems and bonsai history, too. At the close of class, each research team will receive a seedling whose fate they will decide. Will your tree go through the rigorous training to become a bonsai or will you plant it outdoors in spring to grow up wild, big and free? Be sure to bring warm coats since we will be in an open exhibit area for part of the workshop. This activity is not recommended for participants under the age of 8, and is geared to children in the third and fourth grades. Due to limited classroom space, strollers can’t be accommodated. Fee: $25 per child-adult pair ($22 FONA/NBF) Registration required.

1:00pm-3:00pm: KidzJam
Kids ages 2-4 are in an exciting stage of life where their imaginations are dynamic and almost anything can be a game. During KIDZJAM, they get structured play time with other kiddos, which is an opportunity for them to develop social skills. Books, toys, puzzles, dolls, trucks, art, and games will keep them busy and entertained. Through interactive stations, energetic team games, and silly GoNoodle songs, kids in grades K-5 will develop their teamwork skills. Most kids love a challenge, especially when they are cheered on and encouraged by our friendly leaders. We want your kids to walk away from this experience knowing how to respectfully cooperate with others, even when they have different ideas or opinions. $10 per session (dates in February, March and April also)

11:00am AND 3:00pm: Laurie Berkner at The Gordon Center for Performing Arts
Children’s music icon Laurie Berkner brings her signature blend of whimsical lyrics and indie folk pop melodies to the Gordon Center in a solo show. Laurie’s hit songs like “We Are the Dinosaurs” and “Victor Vito” are featured on children’s networks Nick Jr. and Sprout, in Off-Broadway children’s musicals, and in children’s books. Be sure to catch the artist People magazine calls “the queen of children’s music” and the New York Times has dubbed “the Adele of the preschool crowd.”

11:00am-11:45am: Sunday Funday at Imagination Stage
Bring your favorite stories to life through dramatic play activities, music, movement, and visual art. Each session you leave with a special take-home item we used or created that day, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home. These popular workshops are themed around beloved children’s books. Featured story: The Snowy Day.

3:00pm-5:00pm: Jumpin’ January Dance Party at Kensington Town Hall
The event will include crafts, a reading room, and dancing led by A-Squad Entertainment. Admission is $5 per person ($20 max per family). Please RSVP above.

5:00pm: Step Afrika! Step Xplosion at Strathmore
Step Afrika!’s fourth annual showcase at Strathmore is going to be big! Percussive dance styles historically practiced by African American fraternities and sororities plus African traditional dance and art forms from around the world come together as Step Afrika! integrates songs, storytelling, and humor into a highly entertaining, interactive show. Watch as the top step teams from across the country showcase the kind of technique and agility that inspires audiences everywhere, and see how Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, promoting teamwork, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding.
