A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theatre: November 21 — December 31
Join the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future as they lead the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey of transformation and redemption. Experience Charles Dickens’ beloved Yuletide story of transformation and redemption at Ford’s Theatre. The 36th Annual Nutcracker at The Puppet Co: November 29 – December 31
Join the Puppet Co. for our annual The Nutcracker! This time honored seasonal celebration includes Tchaikovsky’s familiar story of Clara and her prince, with some Puppet Co. nursery rhyme spin. Recommended ages 4+.

The Polar Express Train Ride at B&O Railroad Museum: November 29-30 & December 1, 6-8, 12-15 & 18-22
Climb aboard The Polar Express to create a Christmas memory that you and your family will cherish forever! Come in your pajamas as a family to watch the live performance of The Polar Express. Once on the train, the classic Christmas tale will be performed and little ones will have the opportunity to meet Santa and receive their first gift of Christmas! Santa’s helpers will greet you upon arrival to the North Pole, where you can take pictures with Santa and have lots of holiday fun.

A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas at Olney Theatre Center: November 29 – December 29
It wouldn’t be Christmas without Paul Morella’s stunning solo rendition of Charles Dickens’s classic tale that represents everything great about the holiday. This is A Christmas Carol in its purest form, with 99% of the text drawn directly from the original novella. Even more impressive, Morella’s theatrical portrayal of over 50 characters honors how Dickens himself would tour the world reciting the story. Now in its fourteenth holiday season, the show is a family tradition throughout the region and a gem constantly being discovered by new audiences.

ELF in Concert at the Kennedy Center: November 29 – December 1
Buddy was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. Merry TUBACHRISTMAS at The Kennedy Center: December 2
2024 is the 51st year of Merry TUBACHRISTMAS! events which are presented throughout the world. Since the first TUBACHRISTMAS, musicians of all ages have gathered annually to perform traditional Christmas music arranged by American composer Alec Wilder on the tuba and euphonium. Online advance reservations for a given performance date will open on a rolling basis, opening every Wednesday two weeks out from the date.

An Irish Carol at Keegan Theatre: December 4 – 31
An original work by Keegan favorite Matthew J. Keenan, AN IRISH CAROL is an homage to Dickens’ classic – told as only the Irish can. This comic and touching play, set in a modern Dublin pub, follows one evening in the life of David, a wealthy pub owner who has lost touch with his own humanity in the interest of self-protection and material success. But on this Christmas Eve – challenged by a voice from the past, provoked by those in the present, and faced with the reality of a lonely future – David’s life may change forever.

NSO at the Anthem: Ugly Sweater Holiday Concert: December 4
’Tis the season to break out your most festively heinous knitwear—the ugly Christmas sweater! Don your favorite holiday threads (ugly or not) for an unforgettable evening of classic Christmas hits and orchestral beauty. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke, the NSO will deck The Anthem’s halls with everything from “Sleigh Ride” and “Carol of the Bells” to a Jingle, Jangle Sing-Along, music from Frozen, and more! Dave Koz & Friends Christmas Tour at Stathmore: December 5
Dave Koz and Friends announce the 26th anniversary edition of the longest-running jazz-based Christmas tour. Black Leaves Dance Company: A Chocolate City Nutcracker at Atlas Performing Arts Center: December 7-8
“A Chocolate City Nutcracker” is Black Leaves Dance Company’s retelling of The Nutcracker story as we follow a young, gay man at his HBCU’s holiday party, who is searching for his Prince, and travels to the Land of Dreams, where we explore a variety of African diasporic dance genres. This work is a love letter to pan-Africanism, the queer community, and family.

NPR’s A Jazz Piano Christmas at The Kennedy Center: December 7
Your favorite holiday classics as you’ve never heard them! The Kennedy Center and NPR present A Jazz Piano Christmas, the annual sell-out event featuring jazz-infused renditions of the season’s most-loved tunes performed by Grammy Award^®–winning pianist Kris Davis, 2023 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition winner Jahari Stampley, and Cuban sensation Roberto Fonseca.

Atlas Presents Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra: A Bohemian Christmas: December 9

Navidad Flamenca (Flamenco Holidays): December 14
Create a new tradition celebrating the holidays the Spanish way. This festive program will take you on a journey of some of the most festive holiday traditions as celebrated in Spain and Puerto Rico. Enjoy an evening of Spanish holiday music and song (villancicos) alongside flamenco dancing, and even a “parranda.” The cast will include Furia Flamenca Dance Company and a rich cast of musicians including, Maestro Torcuato Zamora, Juan L. Handel’s Messiah at the Kennedy Center: December 19 – 22
Hallelujah—Washington, D.C.’s favorite holiday tradition returns! Since its debut nearly three centuries ago, Handel’s Messiah reigns unchallenged as the ultimate celebration of holiday joy. This year, experience the larger-than-life oratorio in all its splendor as Masaaki Suzuki conducts the NSO, a stellar cast of soloists, and the University of Maryland Concert Choir in this always-daring, beloved classic.

The Dance Institute of Washington: The Spirit of Kwanzaa: December 20 – 22
We invite you to the Dance Institute of Washington’s (DIW) most popular and longest-running cultural arts production (since 1995), The Spirit of Kwanzaa! The Spirit of Kwanzaa is a cultural arts celebration that focuses on the agricultural ceremonies of Africa. DIW has adapted the seven principles of Kwanzaa to convey the struggles and creativity of the Black diaspora. The production highlights the holiday’s principles with dance, song, live drumming, and spoken word. Immerse yourself in this life-changing experience, by exploring this year’s theme, FOR THE CULTURE. This isn’t just a catchphrase—it’s a call to reclaim our heritage as a unifying force.

The Hip-Hop Nutcracker at The National Theatre: December 20 – 22
A holiday mash-up for the whole family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker comes to The National for the very first time. Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Jennifer Weber, this contemporary dance spectacle is a re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, smashing hip hop dance and Tchaikovsky’s timeless music together into a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event. The Hip Hop Nutcracker is brought to life by a powerhouse cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set.

Maryland Youth Ballet’s Mini-Nut: December 20-23 & 26
The Mini-Nut is MYB’s abbreviated version of The Nutcracker geared towards younger audiences. This one-hour version is a great introduction to ballet for our youngest theatregoers. The performance is approximately one hour long with no intermission. A perfect holiday mini-treat!

The Nutcracker at Montgomery College: December 20 – 26
Magical dolls, life-sized mice, dancing snowflakes, and an enchanting kingdom of sweets return to stage this holiday season for Maryland Youth Ballet’s full-length production of The Nutcracker. Set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, the incredible dancing and dazzling costumes bring to life the classic story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince.

NatPhil: Handel’s Messiah: December 21 & 22
‘Tis the season for Handel’s Messiah! Celebrate the season with this ultimate holiday classic, guided by guest conductor Anthony Blake Clark. NatPhil and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society reunite along with four celebrated soloists – Soprano Aundi Marie Moore, Mezzo Soprano Lucia, Tenor Norman Shankle, and Baritone Jorell Williams. Embark on a musical journey through this timeless holiday classic.

Messiah Sing-Along at The Kennedy Center: December 23
Be part of Washington’s most popular free holiday event, the Kennedy Center’s Messiah Sing-Along. Back by popular demand, the evening concert features conductor Nancia D’Alimonte as she leads members of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, guest soloists, a chorus of 150, and a very enthusiastic audience in Handel’s masterpiece. A family and community tradition since 1971!

Strathmore has so much to offer to not only adults but for Bambinos of all ages as well. They have summer camp for kids and teens, a fun backyard summer concert series we attend every year, an annual Uke Festival and Bambinos can be a part of the Strathmore Children’s Chorus or the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra. Children’s Art Talk & Tour

Young art lovers can get behind the brushstrokes and into the head, heart, and history of the artists with these kid-friendly Saturday tours. Children take part in an educational guided tour of the current exhibitions followed by a hands-on art activity. Ages 7 & up. Accompanying adults are free. Reservations required. Saturday Family Jam Sessions

Junior music aficionados spend Saturday mornings singing, playing, and preparing for a lifetime of music appreciation. Strathmore’s fun, creative, kid-friendly series features renowned jazz singer Rochelle Rice and multi-instrumentalist Seth Kibel.

Recommended for ages 3–8. All sessions take place at 10:15am in the Mansion.

Performances on March 2 and April 13 are sensory-friendly to create an experience that is welcoming to children with autism or sensory sensitivities.

Saturday Family Story Sessions

Our popular Saturday Family Jazz Sessions series continues this fall with a new, story-telling twist. Saturday Family Story Sessions is 4 weeks of fun! Local storytellers teach kids how to weave narrative tales, instilling a love of learning with every word. Music, movement, art, and interactive play: it’s all about understanding other people, enjoying different cultures and boosting imagination and creativity. Recommended for ages 3–8.

Everyone needs a ticket! All attendees, including accompanying adults, must have a ticket.

Children 2 years old and under will be admitted for free, but they do require a ticket to help us manage attendance and be sure we don’t go over our maximum allowed capacity. If you plan to bring a child 2 years old or younger to this performance, please call our ticket office to reserve a special free ticket at 301.581.5100.

Weekend Picks in and around Washington, DC + Columbus Day

The weather is predicting a perfect weekend for Fall festivals, pumpkin and apple picking!

Maryland Renaissance Festival takes place on weekends from August 26-October 21, 2018. The Rent Fest will be full of jousting while serving up lots of turkey legs! Take a time machine back to medieval times where you’ll see wizards, knights and wenches. With plenty of entertainment, including music, jousting, mazes, puppetry, pony rides, a huge pirate playground and so much more. Your children will see people dressed up in 16th century outfits and will be begging to participate while staring in awe. Dress like a knight and come participate or just watch!

BloomBars; a local, not-for-profit community arts organization has a long list of children’s programming you don’t want to miss. King Bullfrog; a high-energy acoustic duo playing folk, blues, world, and original music for children and their grown-ups will perform on Saturday at 4:00pm.

When Hot Wheels launched the original “Sweet 16” die-cast cars in 1968, they were considered some of the most influential and legendary cars in automotive history. One finalist from each of the 15 cities will join us at SEMA 2018 in Las Vegas, where one lucky winner will be immortalized as a Hot Wheels Legend and transformed into a die-cast car sold around the world. Bethesda’s famous food and music festival brings 60 restaurants and five stages of entertainment to Bethesda’s Woodmont Triangle. Each year, more than 40,000 attendees sample the delicious restaurants, enjoy the live entertainment and visit the kid’s corner for face painting and arts & crafts.

11:00am-4:30pm: Hispanic Heritage Month Family Day: Making History, Sharing Culture Featuring Disney Pixar’s Coco at National Museum of American History
The Smithsonian Latino Center and the National Museum of American History invite you to celebrate the kick off of Hispanic Heritage Month in this day full of activities for families and visitors of all ages! Participate in hands on activities, learn about animation and storytelling, enjoy the Cooking Up History demonstration with renowned Mexican-American chef Zarela Martinez; meet members from Disney·Pixar’s “Coco” team, including character modeling artist Alonso Martinez, watch “Coco” with your friends and family, dance to the music of Grupo Bella, an all-female mariachi band. All festival activities are free, however reservation tickets will be needed for the timed film screenings of Coco.

Swedish artist Karin Lithell leads children ages 3-10 in expressing themselves through art! Attendees are set up with everything they need to participate free of charge. Come try quilling or create your own abstract art piece inspired by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. Free admission and no registration required. Also check out Room for Children and Storytime Sessions! Storytime Sessions are offered every Saturday at 2 pm for families to experience Swedish children’s literature. Free Admission for All! Fun for Kids and Adults! Join us for an afternoon of fun and laughter! Activities include obstacle courses, climb wall, bounce house, face painting, live bands and performers … and more! Enjoy creating different arts and crafts. Come say hello to the folks who keep you safe and check out their fire trucks and squad cars! Music all day long … our main stage will feature jazz, rock, cumbia, pop, R&B and more! Put your dancing shoes on! What to do with your child when there is no school!

9:30am-11:00am: Rise and Rhyme at Busboys and Poets (VARIOUS LOCATIONS)
Rise + Rhyme is a weekly morning storytelling and performance series for children ages 5 and under with the goals of teaching children to engage with their community, learn to love performing and become rising artivists! Rise + Rhyme is held every Monday morning in Hyattsville, MD and Takoma & Brookland, DC and every last Tuesday of the month at 9:30 AM at Busboys and Poets in Shirlington.

10:45am: The 2018 National Columbus Day Ceremony at the Christopher Columbus Memorial Plaza (across from the Union Station)
The festivities will begin with music from “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. Other featured parts of the program include: US Joint Services Honor Guard, Knights of Columbus Color Corps, Presidential and Mayoral Proclamations, Addresses from the National Park Service and the embassies of Italy, Spain, and the Bahamas, Youth Essay Contest winner, and the wreath presentations. This is a great event for the entire family. Do not miss this educational, historic, and patriotic ceremony.

The museum’s 39th-annual family festival celebrates the textile arts and cultures of Turkey. Watch local artists weave, spin, embroider, and more; enjoy traditional dance performances; and explore spectacular rugs woven by nomadic women through family-friendly tours of A Nomad’s Art: Kilims of Anatolia. Free; no reservations required. A note about the weather: Celebration of Textiles will be held indoors at the museum. If there is any change to the university’s operating status due to Hurricane Florence, information will be posted here.

10:15am & 11:30am: Saturday Morning Story Sessions at Strathmore: Spellbound Theatre Under the Tree
This fall, families gather once a week for fun and creativity, enjoying diverse and dynamic programs with the very best storytellers in the area who engage young audiences and instill a love of learning with every word. Recommended for ages 3–8. The 10:15am performances are sensory-friendly for children with autism or other disabilities that create sensory sensitivities. “A young girl escapes her noisy life and takes us on an immersive exploration of a magical world in her own backyard. Told through puppetry, multimedia, and interactive storytelling, this unique performance brings the outdoor world to life in the Mansion.”

10:30am: Rainbow Rock Band at Jammin Java
Join the Rainbow Rock Band for the CD release show for their new album, “Total Eclipse of the Rainbow.” Rooted in education and movement, the Rainbow Rock Band uses music to assist in comprehension of academic skills like, colors, numbers, weather and more, and their latest CD release is no different. “Total Eclipse of the Rainbow is a super fun educational trip around the sun!

11:00am-5:00pm: Glover Park Day is ON! at Guy Mason Rec Center
Glover Park Day is GPCA’s annual outdoor festival that celebrates the Glover Park neighborhood in Washington, DC. It is co-with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. Glover Park Day is usually held on the first Saturday in June. Glover Park Day was started 29 years ago and it has grown over the years to offer the neighborhood a chance to enjoy the outdoors together, spend time with family and friends, listen to good music and enjoy our local businesses and restaurants. This year we hope to have the best Glover Park Day ever, bringing the community, local businesses and friends together to celebrate.

1:00pm-3:00pm: Creek Critters Day at Little Falls Creek
Hunt for Macro Invertebrates and Discover Who Lives in the Little Falls Creek! It looks like the rain will be over, so we invite you to join Little Falls Watershed Alliance for a fun family activity identifying critters in the creek. We have all the tools you need to capture and ID the macro-invertebrates that live in the water. Bring your smart phone as we will be using the Creek Critters app created by the Audubon Naturalist Society for this activity. We have smart phone covers so don’t worry about it getting wet. And if you don’t have a smart phone, we can pair you someone who does. We also have a few boots to lend! RAIN PLANS: Please check our website to see if the event is cancelled due to rain. We will decide Saturday by 11:00 am.

10:00am-Closing: Monkey Joe’s Birthday
All locations will offer $5 admission all day as well as birthday cake and prize giveaways throughout the celebration. Guests can also join in singing happy birthday to the children’s favorite mascot, Monkey Joe, and a dance party. Prizes and giveaways will vary by location. Locations will be open at 10:00 a.m. for the birthday celebration and will close as each location’s standard closing time.

11:00am-4:00pm: Children’s Day at Brookside Gardens
Join Brookside Gardens as they celebrate the magnificent state of Maryland and the opening of the newly themed Children’s Garden, “Explore Maryland”. Enjoy crafts and activities that interpret the western MD Appalachian Mountains, the central agricultural basin and the eastern shore of Maryland. Try a climbing wall, pot up a black-eyed Susan (the Maryland state flower), learn how to save the Bay and dance to live music by students from the Tree House School of Rock, and more. 12:30pm & 1:30pm: Art Jamz Graffiti Party
It is time to get messy like a street artist at our $10 Kidz Graffiti Party and get 1 hour of studio time to paint the wall. The lounge will be open for accompanying parents and we’ll be playing jamming tunes to inspire all the little artist. Afterwards, your family can purchase additional studio time and canvas and let your vision come to life off the wall.

Friday & Saturday evening, Mount Vernon is celebrating Independence Day. Enjoy a patriotic evening filled with dazzling fireworks, Mansion tours, musical performances, and games on George Washington’s beloved estate! Fireworks begin at approximately 9:30pm.

Smithsonian Folklife Festival established in 1967, honors contemporary living cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. Produced annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Festival has featured participants from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. The free Festival takes place for two weeks every summer, overlapping the Fourth of July holiday. It is an educational, research-based presentation that features master artisans and other tradition bearers.Visitors are invited to sing and dance along, try craft and game workshops, learn traditional recipes, ask questions, and take part in this unique cultural exchange.

Breakfast with the Bears at the National Zoo will run on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, July 1 from 9-10:30am. This is a class you can surely sink your teeth into. Learn about the favorite foods of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s three species of bears, and then join us for outdoor snack time outside one of the bear exhibits! Friends of the National Zoo preschool classes are designed for children ages 2-3 to discover a whole new view of the National Zoo. “Adult-and-me” format classes use interactive learning stations, hands-on activities and crafts, Nature Play, and exciting Zoo Walks to engage your child’s sense of wonder and curiosity about wildlife and the natural world. Pre-registration is required.

5:00pm-8:30pm: Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
The free concert series features jazz artists performing a wide variety of styles—Traditional New Orleans jazz, blues, swing, Ska, Funk, Blues, Pan-Caribbean salsa, boogaloo, Go-go, and more. During jazz concerts, the Pavilion Café offers a special menu of creative American cuisine and refreshments. The free Capitol Riverfront Friday Night Concert Series is back for its 8th Season. Every Friday night this summer, come to Yards Park to relax and enjoy the river view, fantastic bands, food and beverage, and a large variety of great restaurants within a few minutes walk from the park. Family-friendly lyrics and grassy open space make this an enjoyable event for adults and kids alike.

8:00am-1:00pm: 11th Annual City-Wide Truck Touch
This event will feature a variety of free activities for kids and adults. A host of DC government agencies will present and demonstrate nearly 30 vehicles used to clean and repair streets, change traffic lights, collect refuse, clear snow, provide emergency services, administer mobile healthcare, and more. Free boxed lunches will be provided to kids age 18 and under.

10:15am: Children’s Art Talk & Tour at Strathmore
Young art lovers can get behind the brushstrokes and into the head, heart, and history of the artists with these kid-friendly Saturday tours. Children take part in an educational guided tour of the current exhibitions followed by a hands-on art activity. Ages 7 & up. Accompanying adults are free. Reservations required.

10:30am: The Wizard of Oz at Wolf Trap Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods
Rediscover the joy of following the yellow brick road with Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion as they travel through a reimagined world of Oz!

11:00am: A Day at the Beach at Little Falls Library
Meet some animals that leave at the seashore! Under the Sea presents “A Day at the Beach,” a virtual tour of a beach on the Atlantic coast. You’ll learn about beach features like sand, waves, tides, dunes, and jetties. Children will meet some of the animals that call beaches home and learn about beach food chains during this lively and educational presentation by a marine scientist. This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County Inc and is appropriate for the entire family, but especially ages four and up. Space is limited; free tickets will be handed out 30 minutes before the program begins.

The Gaithersburg Book Festival is a celebration of the written word and its power to enrich the human experience. Our mission is to foster an interest in reading, writing and literary conversation. Complete with a Children’s Village. In the GBF Children’s Village, you will also find a literary sea of activities, workshops and performances brought to us by multiple sponsors. They are designed to engage and stimulate your child’s book curiosity and interest in reading and writing.

10:00am: First Studio at The Kreeger Museum
Children are invited to use their imaginations as they explore the paintings, sculpture, and architecture of The Kreeger Museum. 10:30am and 1:00pm: NSO Music for Young Audiences: Brass of Peace
Comprised of 13 D.C.-area high school students, one of the city’s finest young brass ensembles joins retired NSO hornist Sylvia Alimena to teach audiences all about how this family of instruments makes music out of metal and wind. Age 3+. Brass instruments make a BIG sound! But when Brass of Peace takes the stage, children might be surprised to see that these musicians behind this powerful playing aren’t much bigger than they are. Comprised of 13 D.C.-area high school students, this ensemble plays a selection of pieces that just might blow the roof off the Kennedy Center. Retired NSO hornist Sylvia Alimena conducts these concerts that bring together the city’s finest young brass musicians to teach audiences all about how this family of instruments makes music out of metal and wind. Come early for a Musical Instrument “Petting Zoo”- Starting one hour before the concert, hands-on activities let children get up close with the instruments they’ll see played on the stage.

National Museum of Natural History Sleepovers

Sleepover guests will experience the museum through an interactive exploration of exhibit halls consisting of games, puzzles and challenges; exhibit-based craft projects; and sleeping under the museum’s giant North American right whale, Phoenix. Sleepovers at the National Museum of Natural History will be heldMay 18, June 1, June 29, July 6, Aug. 24 and Aug. 31.

National Museum of American History Sleepovers

Participants will solve a mystery of historic proportions during an interactive exploration of exhibit halls. When the devious diva Miss Rose steals six valuable objects from the museum, kids must discover what is missing before the evening’s end. Using their detective skills, they will collect clues to guide them to the crime scene. Along the way, they will take part in games, experiments and craft projects—and even become a presidential candidate. Sleepovers at the National Museum of American History will be held May 11, May 25, June 15 and Aug. 10.

National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center Sleepovers

Kids and their chaperones will explore the whole world of flight, from its pioneering days through the era of commercial aviation to the excitement of today’s space program. After they grab a flight checklist, they will take off for a night that includes plenty of games, art activities and close-up looks at some of the most historic and fascinating craft ever to take to the skies. Udvar-Hazy Center staff will be on hand to offer information and insights about the aviation treasures on view. Sleepovers at the Udvar-Hazy Center will be held July 14, July 28 and Aug. 18.

A limited quantity of free tickets will be available. No strollers, please.

Doors open 60 minutes prior to the show. Seating will be available in the back of the house, but we plan to leave plenty of floor space for dance and play! AMP is located at Pike & Rose.
