Weekend Picks: Intersections Festival, yoga in french and brunch

Besides the schedule below we wanted to make you aware of Atlas Intersections Festival. They begin the 5th annual Festival this weekend showcasing performances in music, theatre, dance, film, spoken word and performance art that offer new ways to see ourselves and to celebrate our community and our world. The festival begins Friday, February 21-March 8. There are many family events (too many to choose for our picks), so please check out the schedule for family friendly shows. Looks like a great time!

Saturday: 

10:00am-4:30pm- Discover Engineering Family Day at The National Building Museum
(401 F Street NW Washington, D.C. 20001)
The Museum invites you to debunk the myths of engineering and discover how professional engineers turn an idea into reality. This event is a FREE, drop-in program ($5 donation suggested). Program and activities are most appropriate for children ages 6 to 12 with adult supervision. Registration is not required. The event can also help Boy Scouts fulfill some badges!

10:00am-12:00pm- Mixed age Art Class at The Children’s Art Studio
(4723 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC. 20016)
The class is ten hours and meet through the end of March (Session dates: Feb. 22, March 1, 8, and 22). Ages 5 and up and is a drop off class. $300.  Must email to enroll. 

 

10:00am- Tot + Craft: Celebrate George! at Tudor Place
(1644 31st Street NW Washington, DC 20007)
Families get to know the first President as well as the nooks of a historic mansion in this interactive scavenger hunt seeking treasures from the Washingtons. After the tour, children will make a special period craft.

10:00am-12:00pm- Cartoon Skate at Washington Harbour Ice Skating Rink 
(3000 K St., NW, Washington, D.C.)
We haven’t been brave enough to take our toddler ice skating yet. But this sounds like a fun way to try it out for the first time. Cartoon characters are on ice skates and want to zip around the rink being silly with your little one. $8 kids/$10 adults/$5 skate rental

10:30am- Family Fiesta at El Tamarindo
(1785 Florida Ave NW Washington, DC 20009)
Liz Buchanan will play traditional and folksy songs and Uncle Devin will rock out on the percussion. Stay after the show for El Tamarindo’s delicious food and watch the Olympics on TV.  Children of all ages will enjoy. $5 per child.

10:30am-11:15am- Saturday Song Circle at Imagination Stage
(4908 Auburn Ave. Bethesda, Md. 20814)
You and your child are invited to a fun, interactive musical experience. An Early Childhood Teaching Artist (playing a ukulele!) explores a popular children’s book (There Was An Old Lady Who…) with your family through song and musical instruments, and you will receive a list of all the songs to practice at home. Best for ages 1 month-3 years. Tickets are $6.

1:30pm-2:30pm- French Academy hosts: Yoga for kids and parents in French at Chevy Chase Baptist Church of Washington
(5671 Western Avenue NW Washington DC 20015)
5 sessions (Feb. 22, March 1, 15, 22, 29) are included in the $100 fee for 1 child or $150 for 1 child and 1 adult. Together with your child, enjoy a real moment of relaxation. Learn how to be in the present moment with relaxing and energizing Hatha Yoga exercises. Yoga can help children with attention difficulties to calm down and become more focused, more aware of their body and mind. All in French, this hour will be a real pleasure you can share together in your family quality time.

1:30pm-3:30pm- Dueling Piano Family Show at Bobby McKeys
(172 Fleet St. National Harbor, MD 20745)
Bobby McKeys is located at the National Harbor, you may have been here for adult beverages and entertainment. They open their doors at 1:00pm for a family friendly show sure to get your kids up, dancing and singing. $18/Adults $15/KIds, under 2 free, ticket includes buffet ticket. You could tie this trip in and also stop by the National Children’s Museum.

2:00pm- Tea with American Girl Addy at Mount Clare Museum House
(1500 Washington Blvd. Halethorpe, Md.)
American girl Addy Walker is ready to have tea time with you. In the summer of 1864 Addy andher mom escape the south and runaway to Philadelphia. Learn about her newlife as a free person in the north. Guests will enjoy hot chocolate and cookies and also make a historic craft inspired by the adventures of Addy. $10.00 non-member, $6.00 Member. 5:00pm- Nila Kay’s Songwriting Workshop for Girls (ages 11-14) at Bloombars
(3222 11th St NW, Washington, DC. 20010)
The workshop is intended to inspire and allow girls a constructive and creative way to release and talk about their emotions in a fun, supportive environment. The class will write a song by the end of the 2 session workshop (send date is Sat. March 1.

Buffet brunch, unlimited mini golf with tot-sized putters and wiffle golf balls, infant/baby play area

10:00am-10:45am- Sunday Funday at Imagination Stage

Your child’s favorite stories will be brought to life through dramatic play activities, movement, music, and visual art. Each session you leave with a completed craft, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home. These popular workshops are themed around beloved children’s books. This weeks story is The Little Engine that Could. Best for ages 1-3. Tickets are $10.

1:30pm and 4:00pm- Rumpelstiltskin at Imagination Stage   images-1

Watch the classic story of how a girl turns straw into gold unfold before your eyes. $12-35 tickets and is recommended for ages 5-10. Playing through March 16.

4:00pm-4:45pm- Kids Yoga (ages 5-10) at Lil Omm
(4708 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016)
Yoga has tremendous benefits for kids, including enhancing their flexibility, strength, coordination, and awareness. This class leads kids through an exploration of poses and challenges their strength, and flexibility. The class will also explore fun partner poses which build trust, self-esteem, and communication skills. This class occurs once a week.

5:00pm-6:30pm- FUNday at Pump it Up
(9172 Gaither Rd, Gaithersburg, Md. 20877)

Get the kids out of the house and get some exercise in before the school week begins. Pizza dinner is served from 6:30pm-7:00pm.

Family Day at Pinstripes
(3222 M Street NW- inside Shops at Georgetown)
A new bowling alley in the District! They also feature bocce ball and a bistro. Sunday is family day with brunch and dinner specials.
10:00am-2:00pm-Pintastic Brunch Adults $20/KIds 12 and Under $12/Under 5 FREE
Family Day: Kids ages 12 and under eat free after 5:00pm from kids menu.

Check out our list of ongoing fun in the city to see what else is on rotation for Sundays and beyond. There are lots of theater showtimes on Sundays, so take advantage.
