Weekend Picks: Star Wars Yoga and Pilot for a Day

Saturday-

10:00am-2:00pm: Pierce Mill in Rock Creek National Park
(Tilden Street (same as Park Road), NW and Beach Drive, Washington, DC 20015)
Mill in Operation (11 AM – 2 PM) – watch the waterwheel turn and learn how the flow of water into the “buckets” brings the wheel to life and sets the machinery inside the mill in motion Visitor Center (10 AM – 4 PM) – learn about the Peirce family and the other mills that operated along Rock Creek. There will be games for children, including a self-guided treasure hunt, water flow and gravity toys, checkers, and other simple toys from the milling period.

10:00am-3:00pm: Become a Pilot at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
(14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway Chantilly, VA 20151)
Learn about becoming a pilot! For one day only, explore an outdoor aviation display with some 50 visiting vintage, recreational, military, and home-built aircraft. Special this year: a United Airlines Boeing 777 you can enter! Talk to pilots and find out what skills are needed to fly. Inside the Center, test your piloting skills in flight simulators and participate in story time and hands-on activities for kids. Have authors sign copies of their books to take home as a souvenir of the occasion and so much more. Free, but $15 parking fee per vehicle.

10:30am: Bridgette and Dawn at  DC Family Fiesta at El Tamarindo
(1785 Florida Ave NW, Washington, DC 20009)
DC Family Fiesta is going on summer vacation– catch their final show! Bridgette plays acoustic guitar and sings lead while Dawn offers vocal backup and plays a variety of percussion instruments, including the congas and bongos.They’ve performed at festivals all around DC and Baltimore, and now they’re here to send us off for the rest of the summer. Come join the fun! A great way to kick-off the weekend! Stay after the show for El Tamarindo’s delicious food and kid-friendly options. Children of all ages will enjoy the music. $4 person/3 people for $10. 

11:00am: DC Public LIbrary Summer Reading Festival  at Martin Luther King Jr Library
(901 G St. NW Washington,  DC  20001)
Kick off summer with reading! Festival features Juggler Nicolo Whimsey, Zumba, Words, Beats Life Performance, Under the Sea: Experience Live Marine Animals, Beat Club: Create Digital Music, Story Time, Face Painting, Crafts, STEM Activities, Giant Chess, and more.

 

Sunday- Happy Father’s Day!!!

10:00am: The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking at Avalon Theatre
(5612 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington, DC 20015)
Hosted by Movie Morning for Girl Scout’s Share Her Annual Real Expenses (SHARE). Proceeds go toward paying for camp for low income scouts. Tickets: $12. All are welcome including non-scouts and boys! Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Service Unit 42-4 includes some portions of Cleveland Park, and SHARE benefits girls and families across the city and beyond.

1:15pm-2:15pm: Fathers Day Yoga (Star Wars Jedi Training!) at Local Motion Yoga Studio
(2377 South Dove St., Alexandria, Va)
Bring your young Padawan and join us for Jedi Training as we discover the force and how to use it for good! Leave your light sabers at home as we learn about our bodies and breath through poses named for our favorite characters like Darth Vader Breath, R2D2’s arm balance, Downward Wookie, and handstands like Luke. We will also discuss the tenets of Jedi code (which correspond with the Yamas and Niyamas of yoga philosophy): peace, respect, self-discipline and the quest for knowledge through training. Padawans ages 3-9 are invited with an adult to share a unique yoga experience that will leave them with a sense of fun, calm and connection…as well as a new way to enjoy yoga! $25 child/parent pair, $5 for each additional family member. Kids ages 3-9 years old.

A few playgrounds for you to take your little ones to this weekend:
Wheaton Regional Park: (2002 Shorefield Road Wheaton, MD 20902)
Equipped with a train and carousel as well as many play areas for bigger kids and smaller ones.

Glen Echo: (7300 MacArthur Blvd. Glen Echo, MD 20812)
Carousel is open from 12-6 Sat/Sun. The playground is on the smaller side but a fun place for a picnic.

Clemyjontri: (6317 Georgetown Pike McLean, VA 22101)
The biggest, best playground around. All abilities and ages will have a blast.  Carousel operates 9:30-6:30 on weekends.
