Now that winter is upon us, let’s embrace the cold like our black & white feathered friends from Antarctica do! Here’s the World Premiere of “The Penguin Song,” a favorite track from Marsha Goodman-Wood’s 2012 Gravity Vacation album. Marsha was delighted to partner with John Cullimore, fellow kindie musician and frontman of family band, Chibi Kodama, who directed and produced this video.

Marsha reports that she and her band, Marsha and the Positrons, are currently in the studio (finally!) recording a new CD and expect to have their record out by summer!

The Penguin Song video features some adorable kids doing their penguin dances, plus live footage of penguins — and who doesn’t like penguins?! Since this is a lyric video, it’s also a great opportunity for young readers to practice reading (and perhaps singing) along. Enjoy!

Gustafer Yellowgold at Jammin Java + Giveaway!

2018 Grammy nominee, songwriter and cartoonist Morgan Taylor is coming to Jammin Java on Sunday, January 7, 2018 for an all-ages performance of Gustafer Yellowgold. Taylor’s new 8th full-length album Brighter Side was just nominated for a 2018 Grammy in the children’s category and he’s bringing those songs to us.

 

Gustafer Yellowgold mixes alternative music with whimsical songs that are filled with super-catchy narratives explaining the life of a friendly alien from the Sun who now resides in a wildly imaginative version of the woods of Minnesota. Fresh from his appearance at WILCO’s revered Solid Sound festival, Taylor will be featuring material from his new album “Brighter Side” alongside classic fan favorites. Brighter Side thematically expands on the two stories of the series’ protagonist, Gustafer, from his current life in Minnesota back to his years spent growing up on the Sun.

Color’s Garden: An Adventure with the Elements of Art at National Gallery of Art is inspired by the art of Henri Matisse, Color’s Garden is a play that celebrates the joys and discoveries of making a new kind of art. Come see for yourself: Saturday at 10:30 and 12:30 and Sunday at 11:30 and 2:00pm. Color, who dreams of making something new all on her own, leads her friends Line and Shape on an imaginative adventure. By working and playing together in new ways, the friends discover that art can capture so much more than what we see with our eyes. Featuring projections, playful animations, and a lively jazz score, this theatrical fantasy brings the elements of art to life and offers new understandings about their expressive power. Following each performance, families will be invited to make collages in our hands-on artmaking space and will be provided with self-guiding resources to explore the elements of art in the Gallery’s collection. The 64th annual National Veterans Day Observance, to honor the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during war and peacetime. The U.S. Army Military District of Washington will conduct a Presidential Armed Forces Full Honor wreath-laying ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, to be immediately followed by an observance program hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Arlington’s memorial amphitheater. A prelude by the United States Air Force Band will begin in the amphitheater at 10:30 a.m.

Celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, in this family workshop. Explore artworks from the Indian subcontinent on an educator-led tour. Participants will solve a mystery of historic proportions during an interactive exploration of exhibit halls. When the devious diva Miss Rose steals six valuable objects from the museum, kids must discover what is missing before the evening’s end. Using their detective skills, they will collect clues to guide them to the crime scene. Along the way, they will take part in games, experiments and craft projects—and even become a presidential candidate. Sleepovers at the National Museum of American History will be held May 11, May 25, June 15 and Aug. 10.

National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center Sleepovers

Kids and their chaperones will explore the whole world of flight, from its pioneering days through the era of commercial aviation to the excitement of today’s space program. After they grab a flight checklist, they will take off for a night that includes plenty of games, art activities and close-up looks at some of the most historic and fascinating craft ever to take to the skies. Udvar-Hazy Center staff will be on hand to offer information and insights about the aviation treasures on view. Sleepovers at the Udvar-Hazy Center will be held July 14, July 28 and Aug. 18.

Sleepover at the National Archives

A night of adventure awaits at the National Archives! Join us for a special sleepover at the National Archives Museum in Washington, DC, and spend the night next to America’s most precious treasures: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. During the event, kids ages 8-12 along with their adults will explore our nation’s treasured records, meet author Kathleen Krull and comic book artist Carolyn Belefski, sleep in the Rotunda near the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and make memories to last a lifetime. Guests also will be treated to movies in the museum’s William G. McGowan Theater before turning in for the night, and will enjoy breakfast – including pancakes flipped by Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero! – and more activities the next morning.

Explore Hillwood’s French treasures through interactive, docent-led, family-friendly gallery talks and a printed activity guide. Now in its 10th year, Kids Euro Festival brings Europe’s most talented children’s entertainers to the DC metro area each fall for two weeks (beginning this weekend through Nov. 5) of free performances, concerts, workshops, movies, storytelling, puppetry, dance, magic, and cinema. Hundreds of children and their families attend WIHS Kids’ Day — a free, fun, family-friendly event created to share the joy of horses with the local D.C. community and teach kids and their families about horses and equestrian sport. Children participate in more than a dozen hands-on educational and fun activities, including pony rides, the Discovery Communications Horseless Horse Show, the Horse Stars Hall of Fame interactive exhibit, coloring station, face painting, pony brushing lessons from Clay Hill Stables, plus giveaways from Georgetown Cupcake. Klinger, the famous horse from the U.S. Army Caisson Platoon, often attends as a special guest to greet the children. There’s even a pony kissing booth with Mini Cooper, the mini pony! Outdoor activities will be held in front of the Hotel Monaco at 700 F Street NW (the street will be closed for the event) and face painting and other events will be held on the Capital One Arena concourse.

The soundtrack for the day will be a family-friendly mix of dance hits and Halloween classics, all at a kid-friendly volume. Oct. 28 (various times)- 4th Annual Pumpkin Hunt at Lee-Fendall House
Alexandria’s ghosts and goblins will fill the Lee-Fendall House garden with hundreds of colorful toy-filled Halloween pumpkins for local children to discover. Other activities include crafts, refreshments, spooky stories, and a costume parade. All children of elementary school age or younger are eligible to participate in the Halloween Pumpkin Hunt. Older children and adults are welcome to enjoy all other activities. Tickets are available for sale online.

Surely you’ve heard about the new District Wharf that just opened! Mark your calendar for four days (started Thursday) of live music, fabulous food, and fun at the Southwest Waterfront as we celebrate the long-awaited opening of The Wharf. The District’s biggest neighborhood event will feature free live entertainment and headliner bands, including The Great Zucchini on Saturday, restaurant openings from DC’s hottest chefs, debuts of iconic shops, and lots of waterside activities and games—concluding both Thursday and Sunday with sunset fireworks.

Maryland Renaissance Festival will be jousting and serving up lots of turkey legs for opening weekend!   Take a time machine back to medieval times. There will be a quilting demonstration by the Needlechasers of Chevy Chase that will include “make and take” quilting for children. Master Weaver Chapuchi Bobbo Ahiagble from Ghana will demonstrate West African Kente strip cloth weaving. Chapuchi grew up among the Ewe weavers near the town of Agbozume, the largest market for Ewe Kente cloth in the world.  A blacksmith, carpenters, bluegrass music, cider press, and corn sheller will round out the activities. Tours of the new orchard will be given throughout the day. And we’ll have hands-on children’s crafts. A food truck will provide lunch options. The waterwheel will be turning from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to showcase the magic of the giant wooden machine, designed by Oliver Evans. Built in 1820-1829 by Isaac Peirce as part of his large estate, the gristmill brings to life the agricultural history of Washington County.

I can’t count the number of times our son wore his “Max” costume from Where the Wild Things Are. Between parades, school, special celebrations and on Halloween he got lots of practicing saying, “Let the wild rumpus start”!
