Weekend Picks June 10-12

Celebrate Fairfax is Northern Virginia’s largest community-wide celebration and will take place June 10-12, 2016 at the Fairfax County Government Center. The 25-acre site was magically filled with fascinating sights and sounds of more than 300 exhibitors, food vendors, and interactive activities. Celebrate Fairfax! showcases live concerts on eight stages, Innovation Health Children’s Avenue, a petting zoo, the Fairfax County Karaoke Championship, carnival rides, and great festival foods. Another fun free activity for kids is the Fairfax Express Trackless Train Ride and nightly fireworks.

Also worth checking out is the Lake Anne Chalk Festival, happening Saturday & Sunday.

The weekend is supposed to be sunny and hot. Cool down at  a splash park, water park or pool!

Washington Nationals take on the Phillies with day games on Saturday and Sunday!

 

Friday-

5:00pm-8:30pm: Jazz in the Sculpture Gardenth-1
(7th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW)
The Jazz in the Garden Series begins its 15th season in May. The free concert series features jazz artists performing a wide variety of styles—salsa, blues fusion, xylophone, Afrofunk, and more—every Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:30 in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. You can purchase food and adult beverages or bring your own picnic (but no adult bevvies are allowed in).

5:30pm: Movie Night in the Heights: Inside Out
(Tubman Elementary-3101 13th St Nw, Washington, DC)
The gates open at 5:30pm. We will have games and activities for guests to enjoy together before the movie from 6pm to 7:30pm. Feel free to bring a picnic. The movie will begin at sundown. We’ll be screening Inside Out. Come and join us for a night of fun!

6:30pm-9:00pm: Friday Night Live Concert Series
(Rockville Town Square- On the Dawson’s Market Stage)
Kick off your weekend with live entertainment, great company, and fantastic food, wine and beer from the restaurants at Rockville Town Square from 6:30-9pm 
on the Dawson’s Market Stage. Music ranges from 80’s and 90’s cover bands, funk and soul, roots rock blues and southern rock.

6:30pm-8:30pm: Rockin on the Riverfront
(355 Water Street SE, Washington DC 20003)
Break out your blankets, picnics, and dancing shoes at The Yards Park! 2016’s Friday Night Concert Series. Kids can splash in the fountains before or during so bring towels. Food and drink for purchase or bring your own.

Saturday-

9:30am AND 11:00am: The Barker of Seville at National Theatre
(1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW)
Rufus the dog aspires to become a famous opera singer in Blue Sky’s hilarious musical comedy The Barker of Seville.  Rufus and his friend Rosa practice and prepare themselves for their future musical roles while working in a local restaurant.  Meanwhile, Leonardo Vespucci Provologni, the self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Opera Star” tries to stop them.  Come find out if Rufus and Rosa make it to the stage and hit the high notes! FREE!

2:00pm-4:00pm: Paint with Me: Kids Edition!
(ReCreative Spaces Perry Street – 3501 Perry Street, Mount Rainier, MD 20712)
Join Imagination Station and Camilla Schaeffer as they present Paint With Me: Kids Edition! Parents, grandparents, or close friends — enjoy an opportunity to bond with a special child in your life. Guests will enjoy an afternoon of creating beach-themed art while enjoying some delicious snacks! This event will also feature vendors, raffles, and more!

3:00pm: Mr. Lilo CD release party and performance
(GALA Theater: 3333 14th Street, NW Washington, DC 20010)
Join in the celebration of this wonderful album, Singing for a Better World and of Mr. Lilo!  Tickets are $10, kids under 2 free.

4:00pm-8:00pm: 150th Annual Strawberry Festival
(St Paul’s Episcopal Church at Rock Creek Cemetery, 201 Allison St., NW, Washington, D.C)
The festival will include food (of course, fresh strawberries and strawberry shortcake) baked goods, hand-crafted items, jewelry and plants, offered for sale. This years events include games, crafts, rock climbing wall, and pony rides for the children. Parishioners and community members of all ages are invited for the afternoon.

4:30pm-5:15pm: Tots & Tykes Yoga at Lemon Tree
(2100 New Hampshire Ave NW)
Tots & Tykes Yoga classes are designed to introduce body awareness and movement concepts to children from crawlers through age 4 using songs, rhymes, and games. Children learn basic poses and simple breathing techniques through creative play. Caregivers are required to attend and encouraged to participate. No yoga mat or experience is required. Registration for the class is $16.

Sunday-

th9:00am-10:30am (same time on Saturday also): Panda-Monium class at National Zoo
(3001 Connecticut Ave. NW Washington, DC 20008)
Bring your little animal lover to the Zoo this weekend for “Panda-monium,” a preschool class for 2-3 year olds! Pandas may look black and white, but they are pretty colorful characters. Explore the world of the Zoo’s most famous family and stop by the Panda House to say hello to panda cub Bei-Bei! Zoo Classes use crafts, hands-on activities, and the Zoo’s animal collection to help your child learn about environmental conservation and life science while building important developmental and social skills. Pre-registration is required. $28/child for FONZ members. $35/child for non-members. 2-3 year olds only with adult.
